We are in a cavern by a large, glowing spider. It looks a bit like a giant rock with legs, and as it moves, it sounds almost like voices. Cali does damage to the spider, and there’s the faint sound of singing in the distance. The more damage we do to the spider, the brighter the light gets, until there’s a cold mist surround everyone’s feet, except Cali because they are on a rock.
The spider dies, and the voices and singing turns into a singular wail. We are spoken to by the ghost of a woman, who tells us to remember her, if we are not betrayers, and then she disappears. Jade finds a cool new doorway, and Cali finds warm green crystals that Wulf is convinced are spider eyes. Cali holds one up to look at him through, but it does not aid in their vision. They shrug and put them in their bag.
The entrance Jade found leads into a memorial room with strings of beads, one of which Quell takes from the high priest’s memorial and replaces with a ribbon. There are inscriptions over bundles in ancient script. Some are dates, some are names. Wulf finds a really cool spear. Cali presses one of the warm stones to their face.
We leave the cave through this area. Wulf sees a woman on the ground, dead, unconscious, or asleep. Quell sends her a message, and she weakly replies “help… me…” Wulf climbs down and smells her. She seems ill.
Cali makes their way down and casts goodberry. Wulf shoves a berry in her mouth, and she wakes up momentarily, mumbles something in a foreign language, and passes back out.
We keep heading down the path, Wulf carrying the lady on his shoulders, and we come across a cairn with a magic aura. Jade touches it and gets mildly poisoned, and Wulf sets the lady down. “Let me know when you are done looking at rocks.” Jade looks at it for awhile, and discovers a path past it into the trees. She heads down there wordlessly, followed by rabbit and Cali, at a slight distance.
We find a second cairn on the way to the woods, a bit broken down and inactive. One of the rocks has a bit of dried blood on it. Quell sends rabbit into the tree line before us, and he sees a human arm bone, an old campfire circle, and a fresher corpse in a clearing. All the bodies have been left alone by the wildlife, which is very odd.
Jade detects necromancy magic on the old campfire, and Quell dispels it. We hear birdsong then, and Quell sends messages to the lady, asking about what the shonsteppe do with their dead so we can honor them. We decide to pull the bodies away from this spot so that they can return to the earth, and we find a broken ram mask under the freshest corpse. Jade carefully picks it up and places it back on the face of the body. Quell makes thunder in their honor, and we’re back on the road.
We arrive at a town, and speak with some guards. They were expecting Nyala but she has not arrived yet. We are allowed to stay the night, and are pointed toward the town healer to get help for the lady we found. Some adult villagers wear masks of monsters or beasts, and every child has a mask on whether they like it or not.
The healer, Liniksha, is eager to help. She is worried about Nyala as well, as Nyala is never known to be late. She works on healing the girl, who she says is probably from Savar. She then gives Quell and Wulf little herb balls for their poison. We thank her, and she suggests to Cali that we seek out Uksang, a young aspiring adventurer. His grandmother, Mia, will usually be glad to serve travelers, and tends to have a stew going at all times. Cali is very excited at this prospect.
Quell asks Liniksha about the copse of trees a ways out from this town. She gives a stern warning about that area, and says that there’s something two valleys over that “does not let the dead rest as they should”. This town was the one that put up the warning cairns that we found. We tell her what we found and how we honored the bodies, and she thanks us. She does say it’s odd that the Savar woman knew to do that, but even so is thankful.
Short rest in the village, and level up!
