Session 52: Battle on the Beach

We all take our places hiding on the beach. Cali hides by pressing their self against the cliff face but on the beach itself, hoping to be close enough to the meeting place to hear everything first hand and be ready to react if need be. Quell and Setluk hide in the cave, swapping off clairvoyance spells. Wulf is hiding as well, and Jade is leaning on a rock for them.
 
The boat slowly approaches, and Cali finds a shell with a hole in it. They pocket it, thinking of Ivy and fingering the hagstone around their neck.
 
Eventually the boat lands on the beach and three cloaked figures step out. One of them matches Vren's build and the other two seem to be strangers to us. They immediately warn Jade to leave if she values her life; the grown ups have things to attend to. She says I'm supposed to meet someone here; are you not Vren? He's confused at first but when he gets closer he realizes who it is. Jade says she doesn't appreciate him sending someone after her, and Vren tells her she overestimates her own importance. He says he wasn't expecting to see her here, and she goes "right." She brings up the way he hired her and asks if he realized he could've just hired her the way he hired the other woman. He dodges this, saying the lady's will is her own. He requests Jade give him everything she took off the woman and he'll give her gold in return. His goonies step forward and he doesn't wave them back. She says she didn't take anything from her and anyway that's not why she's here. She attempts to strike a new deal with him where he takes security off her man in Dria and they can renegotiate terms. He reminds her she's looking for information for them, the "what" is not her concern. He calls her a rat picked up in Dria and says that she has no place to negotiate anything. He starts getting riled up and demands information now. His goons step up even more and Cali tenses in the shadows.
 
Jade gives him as basic of information as she can and tells him about our plans to collect all the crystals and then destroy them all at once. She suggests letting us collect the pieces for them and do their dirty work for them, but teases his confidence by saying he could definitely keep sending people after us if he thinks he has to. He wants to know where we are right now and Jade says that's her business, not his, grumbling about tracking through the wilderness and not being able to take a bath. He seems a bit hesitant but seems like he's willing to make a new deal, but says what she's told him now is not enough of an offering. He wants names, species, etc. She teases him that he doesn't already know those things? He begrudgingly admits that the lady knows more than he does and doesn't divulge everything to him. She sighs and offers to give descriptions if, on top of payment, on top of their new terms, he leaves her to do her job and stops sending extra people after her and us, and she will let him know when we've collected the rest of the crystal shards. He says "we??" She tells him she's traveling with us, how does he think she knows this information??
 
He instead offers that if she tells us where we are right now, he'll "take care of that little problem" for her, and then he'll take his men off her person. They can go their separate ways and the contract is done. She points out how unhelpful that would actually be to their lady. He assumes that we don't have the crystals and demands where they're hidden. She uses this assumption as leverage but he isn't budging. One of the shadows hisses something at him after he threatens to kill her, and he hisses something back, but it's in a language we can't understand. Jade tells him this is not worth her while then and he makes a threat to tell the lady she's clearly in this for something more, implying that she cares about us and that would look very bad for her. One of the other shadows hisses something in the same language we don't know, but in Naghi, Vren says "no! I'm in charge, and I say we kill her!"
 
Quell casts "sending" and in Naghi says "it doesn't sound like you're in charge." He jumps out of his skin. He yells at his goons to grab whoever is hiding! He pulls out his dagger and we all roll initiative from our respective hiding places. Cali lands a total of four arrows into Vren, Quell whacks him with a windstorm and some lightning, and Jade kills him pretty easily with her flame sword. "I would have taken the deal, you know" she says as he dies.
 
Cloak 2 asks : "We outta here?" in Naghi. Cloak 1 replies: "No! Destroy them!"
 
Wulf chases after them and chomps cloak 2 and casts something that makes him attack his teammate.
 
"You STILL say we stand and fight Irrin??" Cloak 2 demands in Naghi. "I'll cover you to get to the boat!!"
 
They refuse, and cloak 2 dies from Quell's thunder wave. Cloak 1 dives into the water and the water elemental they summoned previously swallows Wulf. Jade plays battleship with cloak 1, attempting to kill him in the water without diving in herself. Quell sends him a message and says "don't tell me you're RUNNING AWAY." He replies "I will tell you EXACTLY that!" Wulf claws a hole in the bottom of the boat and then defeats the water elemental.
 
Jade loots Vren's body and sets it on fire. Cali finds a small, barred chest in the boat and Wulf smashes it open. 2,000gp spills out, and a silver hand mirror without a handle falls out too. Quell flips it over quickly and we silently discuss what to do with it. Jade determines that it's probably not constantly active so Quell wraps it in a punch of cloth and shoves it in the bottom of her bag. Jade pulls the hood back on the 2nd cloaked figure and finds a venom blooded woman with pointed ears. She has a bag too that holds a hooked nonmagical short sword with agate stones in the hilt, a spare bone dagger with some magical properties, 44gp, and a well sealed leather pouch decorated with beads. We pocket everything for now, and decide to haul the venom-blooded woman's body up the cliff and hide it under the damaged boat in some trees, and preferably cover it with some branches and leaves too. Quell will prep speak with dead in the morning so we can ask her questions.
