Quell begins combat by getting within 30 ft of all the undead, slamming down her stick, and saying “She will take you back.” And casting turn undead on all of them. It is very cool.
Iviril casts a spell that makes a horrible, rancid cloud surround us, and everyone but Wulf spends an action retching. Wulf’s time has come, and he pulls out the fan artifact that Quell gave him awhile ago, and disperses the cloud!
Three were-bears show up at the beginning of the fight, but seem to be helping us fight the undead and not going after us.
Jade gets in a hissing contest with Iviril. Winner unclear.
“it’s hard to be threatening when you look like a chew toy.” -Wulf
“Wulf said, y’all taste bad and need to die” -Remi
Wulf has imprinted on Quell??? Hahahaha
We kill the necromancer and the other undead. We all gather around Iviril’s body to make sure she’s really dead. Cali notices there’s still a bit of a green glow in the skull mask and reaches for the mask. They are overcome with the urge to press it to their face, and Jade tries to smack it out of their hands but fails. Quell instead wacks Cali with her thunder stick, and they drop the mask. They still want to take it with them, but they don’t immediately need to press it to their face.
Jade wants to remove curse on the mask, but after we take it away from here. Wulf insists that Quell take the mask instead of Cali, because “Quell is very powerful.”
“It’s such a shame we don’t have large tongs, really.” -Alys
Quell picks up the mask with a crowbar and wraps it up in cloth. She hears something like faraway whispers, but is able to stuff the mask deep into her bag with no issues.
Wulf and Cali go into the house to make sure there’s no more danger waiting for them. We find a plain silver ring, 2 soft faintly embroidered gray silk slippers, 3 scrolls, a staff of the woodlands that Tribuvham calls dibs on, and a silver chime—the last of 12. In a box we also find a carved marble hand (part of an old statue), a bag of 20 pearls, 1 large gorgeous pearl, a carved jade figure of a horse, 320 gold of old origin.
One of the scrolls is Illusory Script, Jade recognizes. The other two are not legible to us. Cali pulls out their gem of seeing to look at the pile of stuff, and sees that there’s illusory script on some of the stuff; mostly dates and locations, fairly recent and spread out among the southern Shonsteppe.
We decide to make a funeral pyre for the necromancer so we can burn her and make sure she doesn’t come back. Wulf is cleaning his wounds and instead of immediately helping drag wood, he asks if we need his help. That is enough of a caution sign, along with how bad he looks after the fight, so Quell just points him toward the pond so he can clean himself up and rest. Tribuvham comes over to help us with the fire after the other two were-bears leave.
We all take turns healing Wulf, and Cali casts cure wounds 4 times, all the slots they have for it, and pats him awkwardly on the head because they don’t know how to do affection.
Quell: “I’m glad none of your masks are like that one.”
Jade: “Why would my masks be like that one?”
Wulf: “Yes, you cannot wear that mask. I hope that none of yours turn evil.”
Wulf does not understand magic.
Tribuvham heads out ahead of us. He will let Nyala and the rest know we’re okay and headed that way shortly. “Sometimes I wonder why I ever stop being a bear,” says Tribuvham. Wulf bonds with him over how much simpler it is in the woods. Tribuvham then turns into a full bear, not just a were-bear, and leaves.
“Thinkin hard or hardly thinking?” -me being an Actual Dad
We head back the way we came, until we come to the live tree from before with two directions. We now follow the opposite direction. We find an elongated, but humanoid, footprint in the mud. We eventually come across a man who looks like one of the alpine mummies, camping by himself. He can speak. “Don’t be feared. I am not here to kill, I am here to die. Once she dies. Once people know.” He still has his memories and can still think for himself. “She does not like that. It does not like that.” Blisters form on his skin. Quell tries to get him to come inside out of the sun. He does, so that he can tell us his story.
There’s a bunch of loose leaf papers in his cave, but he didn’t write them, she did. He tells us to take them. He escaped because she opened the fence and told him to run. “I hope she is glad to rest. It will not rest. It will find another.” He tells us to destroy the mask, or “take it back to the dark.” He says it was the only time it ever sounded afraid, when it spoke of the dark.
He says if there is a widow in the town with gold earrings, to tell her he is alright and gone again. He does not remember his name, but he remembers her and he wants her to move on and be happy. Jade then agrees to behead him with her magic sword. He disintegrates for the most part, and Quell shallowly buries the bones.
We read the papers and talk about the mask, and how it takes over people. Quell and Cali share what they felt and heard when they interacted with the mask, and Jade rambles about curses and how to break them, and hypothesizes about the mask. She decides to take a look at it tonight to try and figure it out.
“Jade knows so much about masks.” -Wulf
“My specialty is knowing about curse work.” -Jade
“Oh… okay. Please do not curse me.” -Wulf
“…well… I don’t need to yet.” -Jade, before doing a bro punch
We start heading back to town.
