We’re in the beach cave in the middle of an ambush we set for the evil people on the ship Branna used to be on. Wulf uses his sewer rat pipes and accidentally says “mm” when they come out instead of “oo”. We then discuss out of character that the pipes could be a convenient way for Wulf to get a meal, like doordash but free! It brings the rat nuggets to you!
The ghosts come in to help and we all start whacking away at these two dudes. Jade kills the swordsmen and then brings him back as a specter that she has control over. We kill the warlock too, and then Jade commands the specter to loot his own body. He has trouble picking things up with his non corporeal hand and Wulf feels bad for him and decides to help him loot his own body. There is a magical longsword with a sharpened pommel, and 40 gold pieces.
The storm outside is picking up however, and one of the ghosts says “waaaaaaaves”. Cali starts edging toward the entrance and Quell confirms with the ghosts that the water is coming. They tell us to “flee or stay with us” and Quell tosses them a couple of coins before we flee.
When we get to the entrance we see the beach already getting swallowed by the ocean and pouring rain. Jade and Cali use dimension door to the top of the cliff we can see, each of us taking one of the other party members with us. We head up the road in the rain. Jade is unhappy, Wulf smells like a wet dog, and Cali unbraids their hair to let it soak in the rain.
When we get to the city gates there’s nobody immediately visible. Quell uses thunder step to get her to the top of the gate, accidentally scaring the shit out of someone guarding the gate from the other side. Quell apologizes and introduces herself and points to us, where we all wave. The cloaked figure is still suspicious so Quell tells them that our friend Setluk is waiting for us at the Spring Rose Inn. They begrudgingly welcome us to town and open the gate for us. They tell us not to set anything on fire, and Wulf says he doesn’t think we’ve ever set anything on fire except for campfires. Cali adds that it’s hard to do that in the rain. We head for the inn.
The specter is still following us, he was mostly invisible in the rain, but as we enter the inn, the innkeep shrieks and wields a broom as a weapon. We try to reassure her and Wulf tells her not to worry, the ghost will not need a room. She says “you’re bring it in here! If you’re going to raise spirits, you need to do it at a different inn!” He is told to keep watch on the roof in that case. The innkeep is still on guard but allows it.
Jade asks for a bathtub to be brought to the room and the innkeep insists that she does not bring bathtubs to ghosts! Jade says the ghost is on the roof not the room?? This makes no difference to sway her, so Jade decides to carry the tub up herself. Jade and Quell go outside to the sauna, and Cali sits in front of the fireplace in their room and falls asleep on the braided rug right in front of it.
In the morning we head downstairs for porridge and sit down with Setluk. Quell tells him we were successful and Branna will be able to return to the ship, although we do need to make another stop there before we leave. He asks if we made more enemies, and Quell says no. Cali says we may have even made friends with the crew. Setluk decides to come with us to the Silent Sky.
Wulf asks Jade where her friend is and she is confused. “What friend?” She asks. “The dead one,” Wulf replies. She tells him that he’s gone and Wulf doesn’t have much of a response.
Setluk takes some bread upstairs to grab Branna, who darts down the stairs when awake. Quell gives her her things, and says she should come with us back to the ship as well. She pulls up her hood and decides to go with us.
When we reach the harbor Branna gets a bit fidgety, and Quell asks if she has any secret calls to alert them. She does a low sliding whistle, and after a moment a very excited crewmate, the younger of the three we met, jumps up and waves wildly.
After we drop off Branna, we go to secure the passage we’ve been promised. Valdren Lockson offers us Maria’s (mah-ria) ship. She looks us up and down and asks if we’re ready for the journey. Wulf offers his help and Quell thanks her. She tells us the captain’s name is Margus, and he’s sailed them five times so far. We should be in good hands, but probably stay out of his way.
The Northern Star is the name of the ship we are getting on. Wulf wants to find the captain and introduce himself, and offer his services. As we board, we’re greeted by Freyja, the second mate, who shows us to our quarters. There are some hammocks in here and beds and a desk. There are bear tapestries with stars and spots for our bags. Cali immediately claims a hammock, and everyone else claims their respective spots. There’s no bed in here for Setluk but he figures he can make a hammock out of his blankets, he just will have to find another place to do so.
Quell and Cali talk about investigating their surroundings and Cali tells her that they have a ring of X-ray vision and also a gem of seeing which could both help. We were instructed to keep out of the hold, so naturally that’s where we want to check first. Jade is dismissive and thinks we’re being ridiculous but the two of us are on the same page.
Wulf goes to find the captain and lists his resume, but is stopped a quarter of the way through. He asks Wulf if he can climb, and he says yes, so he’s then told to go up to the crows nest and help Silas, the person up there. Wulf effortlessly leaps and climbs up to the top, and then lists his resume for his new co-crewmate.
Meanwhile, once night falls, Cali uses their X-ray ring and gem of seeing and learns that there are fabrics with embroidery that have the illusion of being dyed without actually being dyed. Aside from that everything else seems normal. They report that to Quell and then find a nice spot to start turning their blanket into a tapestry, with an image of their home campsite and some of their siblings around it. They do a quick sketch for reference and then just start working at it.
Quell goes to find Setluk and they have a chat about being on a ship and such. She does a prayer for safe travels and good winds as well before bed.
On about day 5, Wulf is up in the crow’s nest and is visited by Freyja who says “he says there are things coming up, like bodies in the water”. She leaves after a brief conversation about this and Wulf keeps a stronger eye out. He doesn’t see much past the grey water fading into the grey fog. …For now.
