Wulf goes to Quell to break her out of her trance. “Are… are you done?” He tells her we’re heading north toward the messenger station, and asks if she knows the person in the statue. She says she does not know. Wulf assumes it is a grave. Quell tells him it is her lady, the one who brings storms. Wulf stares up in awe. Quell marks the statue as best as she can on the map.
We set out on the road. We end up in grass taller than we are, eventually even coming across a section that’s laid flat almost perpendicular to the road, most likely from weather, like a tornado. Wulf determines the direction it must have gone in, and Cali is alarmed to learn that storms can move and create a path of destruction.
Around dusk, we come across a woman with an axe. She lets down her magical barrier to let us in, once we tell her the town we came from. Her name is Khulan. Inside is a surprisingly large number of people. Khulan tells us a bit about the messenger post here, and asks if we have healing magic. Quell says she does, and gives the message to Khulan.
Quell tells her that we are looking for a friend, and it has taken us many places so far, which is why we have a message from the Shamas. Khulan says there’s a shrine and tomb to “she who rides the lightning” because her bloodline was supposed to worship her, but Khulan simply keeps it up to honor her great great great great grandmother. They’ve buried their matriarchs there for generations. She needs us to go inside it and restore the old barriers for her, and in exchange, we can take a magical leaf boat. We need a seal of a falcon, which she gives us, and healing magic. On the right wall is a three gem array. Press turquoise, opal, emerald, in that order, and the old barriers should come back to life. The tomb is a couple hours’ walk away.
There is also a missing man named Tafi, who is married to Moira and Oska. He went out to scout the tomb, but his magic is warlock magic tied to the wind. It was storming when he left and he said he’d be right back, but it’s been 2 days. He’s pale and has a “dashing” mustache.
“I am good at… looking… for things…” -Wulf
We stay here for the night and eat some of their stew. Quell finds Khulan and asks about the storm maiden. They also talk more about Khulan’s great great great great grandmother. Apparently she haunts the tomb and will curse anyone who tries to enter without the seal. Quell tells Khulan about how her lady comes to her, and that she is not dead.
In the morning, Wulf slurps the liquid out of his stew and sops the rest up with bread. We head out after giving our thanks to Khulan. The path to the tomb is small and winding, and halfway down it, Wulf smells blood.
“Wulf growls.” -Rex
“There is no response.” -Elizabeth
Just off the path, we find a semi conscious man in blood spattered clothes. He has a large mustache, he must be Tafi. He mumbles about having killed the ghost of a sabertooth cat. We give him some healing magic and some water. He’s speaking in Schildling so Cali and Wulf are the only two who understand him. He says that there was a glowing sabertooth cat ghost that attacked him while he was on the trail, and he drank a healing potion and fell asleep. He asks if he looks cursed. Wulf asks Jade. She says no.
Tafi: “I wish I could smell ghosts!!”
Wulf: “Not all that glows is ghosts.”
Tafi leads us down the path to show us where the glowing sabertooth appeared. He does magic to reenact the situation, even jumping up 7 feet in the air. He says that in his experience, once you kill a ghost, it disappears the way the cat did. Jade asks if he kills ghosts often, and he confirms that he has had his share of ghost encounters. He eventually heads back, and we continue on the trail. Thankfully, we do not encounter any glowing maybe-ghosts.
As Quell approaches the tomb, a small square door glimmers into place for her. She presses the seal on the wall, and the door opens for all of us. She takes the seal with her and the door stays open.
Jade reads an inscription aloud that says: “Beware the curse of thieves and fools.”
Quell: Well, we are not thieves.
Wulf: How do we know if we are fools?
Jade: You’re definitely a fool.
Quell does not respond and presses the seal on the next door.
We come across another barrier with a rat that’s squealing in agony. Jade reads an inscription on this door that says: “What use are the highest if they forget the least?” She bends down to look at the rat. It has some sort of illusion magic on it to make it look like it’s been burnt. Quell casts healing word on the rat. It disappears through the wall, and three sigils appear on the wall. There’s a falcon like on the symbol, a horse, and a branching antlered crown. Quell touches the seal to the falcon symbol and the barrier fades away.
We come into a room full of gold and relics. The gems on the right wall are just as Khulan described, and Quell presses them in the correct order. Everything shimmers, and a ghost appears in the room. “A cleric, but not of my blood. A child of southern magic. An easterner with secrets. And a wolf. Why have you come here bearing my granddaughters’ seal?” She asks us to tell Khulan that she does not need to be a cleric to visit, she just needs to bring one. She really wants her to visit.
Quell talks to the ghost about Khulan and her family, and they talk about she who rides the lightning. The ghost tells us which chest holds the leaf boat. She then gives us each items. “You are a… strange… group.”
Wulf is pointed to a chest with a sabertooth cat’s tooth. It is a healing item. Touch a wound with it, and it will heal as though with a spell.
Jade is pointed to a bag with a beaded half mask. It can prevent her from being scryed on, though only for one day out of seven.
Cali is pointed to a red cloak that will protect them from the worst weather, and many of the difficulties of falling into deep water. It will not prevent them from drowning, but it will slowly pull them back to the surface and keep them from freezing to death while doing so.
Quell is pointed to the ghost’s own tomb. She wants to give her a piece of carved obsidian in the shape of the storm maiden’s face. It has some magic, and will probably be different for Quell than it was for her, and was originally going to be passed down to her daughter. But instead, she wants Quell to have it.
Quell opens the woman’s coffin once her spirit has gone, and finds the chunk of obsidian. Cali pulls up the hood of their cloak and shrinks into the fur lined warmth. Jade turns over the mask in her hands and inspects the magic on it. Wulf talks to his tooth and tells it he will take it on a hunt very soon.
We get the leaf that is supposed to turn into a boat, and the bag it goes inside. The ghost’s name according to the inscription over her tomb, Jade tells Quell, is Tirga da Narei. Quell draws the symbol of her lady in chalk on top of the tomb as we leave.
On the path, Wulf pulls out the sabertooth to see if there’s a glowing cat anywhere, or if the tooth talks to him at all. Jade hands him back his torch, still lit. He panics until she puts it out for him. He thanks her and drops it on the ground. There is a very awkward conversation about why Wulf does not want the torch and why he had it at all, and Jade finally takes it. We return to the messenger station.
