The river current is noticeably rougher today, and around midday we hit a stretch of rapids. We all manage to hang on while Wulf steers the boat, but both Quell and Cali get soaked. After the stretch of rapids, we reach a waterfall.
Wulf: "Hold on... tighter. Water fall."
None of us fall out of the boat, thankfully. We travel along the river awhile longer, and eventually stop at a mossy tree on the side of the river. Quell sends Liya a message, asking for an update on the people looking for us, and are told that no one has come looking yet. Wulf goes to hunt some ducks, and catches a small one. He gives us all some feathers from the duck as he plucks it. When it’s time to cook the duck, Jade pulls out her spices and helps Wulf season the duck.
COOKING LESSONS WITH JADE!!
She teaches him how to do it without touching the meat when it's not necessary to.
Wulf: "Cooking is hard."
Jade and Wulf talk about Wulf’s childhood, and he struggles to find the word “nostalgia”.
The sun sinks down and we start our watch cycle. A fog elemental appears while Jade is on first watch. She summons an air elemental and tells it to talk to the fog elemental. It actually works?! She tells it to tell the fog elemental that we do not wish to intrude on their space. The fog elemental tells the air elemental to extinguish our fire, and once it does, the fog elemental gives Jade a nod and disappears back from where it came.
Wulf wakes up and asks what happened. Jade pulls out the artifact she used to summon the elemental and they talk about how she used it. Wulf tells her it is very impressive, and then offers to switch out for watch. In the morning, Wulf does his best to explain what happened the night before with the elementals, and Cali is confused. We have a conversation about language, and Wulf and Cali agree to disagree on how many creatures have language.
We set back off on the river, and eventually come across a salt pillar. Wulf licks it. It only tastes vaguely of salt. We travel a little further and come to a town called Saaxil Village, according to a sign we come across. This town seems to be split in two, mostly due to the drastically different architecture. There are two temples facing each other, both drastically different from each other in aesthetic.
The north side is Xelmmetton style, the south side is Lan Ci style. This seems to be due to disputes between people, and Wulf can discern that they’re essentially two different packs that have been forced to merge. We take this in briefly, and when Quell starts walking further into the town, we all end up exploring a bit. The town seems mostly empty, like the people here are mostly staying inside. We find a path to the bluff and take it, and go up to the lighthouse. It’s slightly falling apart, and there is no light at the top. Cali and Wulf both consider climbing it, while Jade and Quell talk about using dimension door to get in.
During this conversation, Wulf jumps and struggles to climb all the way to the first window, but does succeed. He is too big for the window, but somehow still manages to scramble inside. It is indeed abandoned, and there is an old fire that has not been lit for some time. He makes his way downstairs to let everyone in. He yells through the door that he made it in, and then rages to try and knock it down. He then whacks the bars out of the way so we can enter. Jade judges him a bit.
We explore the lighthouse and the rooms inside. Jade finds a non magical crystal, and a very magical door. It is unlocked, and when Quell opens it, we see a dusty bed and a wooden chest. Quell sends rabbit inside and Jade goes inside. There’s a chest with a page that’s been ripped, one of which has Egil’s signature on it, and everything else in the chest has disappeared. Wulf finds a broken flute and keeps it with the intention of fixing it later. He will become a bard, once again. lol
We find tracks and traces of magic that lead us to believe that whatever happened here was about a week ago.
Wulf: “They must have come and then left.” Wulf is smart enough to know this.
We decide to go find an inn in town so that Quell can search for the crystal shard tomorrow. The inn keeper has not seen many outlanders before. She says “welcome back,” which confuses Wulf.
Wulf: “Back… I have never been here before.”
There was a grey death here last winter. She says it was a plague, caused by old magic. Her name is Cualli, and her brother Aapo works the bar. The lighthouse is not lit simply because it has not been a priority since the last man who ran it died and left too many rules in his will. He was one of the first taken by the plague.
Cualli tells us a story about an old sorcerer who made a mill to grind the salt, but someone came along and tossed it into the sea, and that’s how they got the Brine Sea. She’s not sure if it’s true, but it’s certainly her favorite.
Aapo offers up a very hot pepper, and says we can get half off our drinks if one of us takes one bite, and a round of free drinks if we can swallow the whole thing without vomiting. We all look at Wulf, who is intrigued but very concerned. Quell says she will buy our drinks. Wulf thinks it might be poison. Jade takes a bite to convince Wulf that it’s safe, because she grew up eating spicy foods. Wulf tells Aapo “Jade is so powerful.” Jade successfully swallows a bite of the pepper and Cualli and Aapo both cheer. Wulf decides that now he will also eat the pepper.
Wulf has some intense pain when he takes a bite but he does manage to swallow. His face is red and he has tears in his eyes, and he gives the pepper back. We all order some food and drinks and sit down for dinner.
