We spend the night in the lighthouse. Quell studies the staff while we rest. Cali looks at the cloak, which turns out to be a Cloak of the Manta Ray. Jade looks at the Sensor of Controlling Air Elementals. Quell meticulously unwinds all of the ribbons from her old staff and puts them on her new cool staff.
In the morning, the three monks greet us when we come downstairs. They ask us where we’re going next, and we all turn to Quell for our answer. She says we’re heading toward the Brine sea, because we’re discussing either going to the lighthouse there or at Armos. Nuru offers to help us get part of the way to the next lighthouse, because she needs to talk to people from another town and get backup to protect this area. She can get us to a temple a few days away, in the mountains over Abannon. Tamarat warns us of storms sweeping up the coast, and says it’s good that Nuru is taking us through the shortcuts.
Tamarat says it looks to be the start of the stormy season, and a dangerous time to look for a ship. We head out in the afternoon.
Cali asks where they can get some tea, and Azara goes on an excited vent about how much better and more cultured tea is than coffee. Jade and Wulf dip out to avoid this conversation. Azara has an extensive collection of tea, and Cali pretends not to be overwhelmed by all the choices. They get Azara to choose for them. They go back downstairs and sit around the tea kettle while the water boils.
Wulf goes to kill something for breakfast. He rolls super high, and catches a large, silvery fish, despite the oncoming storm. Jade supervises, and is fascinated by how buff and stupid Wulf is. “Himbo rights.” He’s warned about the small bones in the fish that could rip up his mouth, so Wulf decides to “crunch more.” He and Jade do take a little extra care to clean it though.
Wulf heads to town after breakfast to help out. He learns about scorpions from a guy who was stung by one.
“Well… I am here to help… with the well…”
There’s muffled shouting coming from the covered up old well, and lots of splashing. The voice is yelling for help, in Drian, in Schildling, and then in Draconic. Turns out, it’s a guy named Dayo who is a resident studying magic in Dria. Some of the villagers recognize him and Wulf helps him out of the well.
Dayo’s mother, Abeni, comes up and hugs him, telling him that he was supposed to come home, not teleport! Dayo says he was supposed to land at a different circle behind the barracks, and is very confused that he came through a well.
We give Dayo information about the well, and he says that this system used to be used globally, and is super ancient and powerful, like “the tombs”. This goes back to the old gods. Apparently, there used to be two moons back then, and they were bigger and better than the one we have now. Dayo is also really defensive about how much he’s learned, regardless of attendance.
We all learn what a school is, and Quell is sure that she would get a 500, the highest score, and Jade tells her she wouldn’t. Wulf rambles about his idea of a school because of his limited experience with a schoolhouse. Dayo tells us about a classmate he totally has a crush on named Cassa.
Wulf talks to Dayo about being careful and only taking calculated risks. Yay, character development! We promise to let Dayo know if we find more portals like this one, and Quell copies down the information and the patterns from the portal.
The villagers start thinking about lunch, and we hang out in town. Cali goes to the market for trail foods and sells a throwing knife, and then goes to hang out by Quell because they don’t want to help with the well. Wulf browses the weapons for sale. He buys a “lucky” embroidered sling and some ammunition.
“Wulf would be really easy to scam.”
Quell and Cali have an interesting conversation about their childhoods and guardians and such, and just when it starts to get too personal, Wulf runs over to show us his new sling. We then get into a philosophical conversation about religion, and Wulf says that Jade, aka “that pretty girl”, might know about this. We decide to ask Jade if she wants to come with us.
We find Jade and ask her, and she agrees to come with us. Wulf is hella excited. We make our way back to the lighthouse and meet up with Nuru. She leads us out at about 5pm. Our journey takes a few days instead of weeks.
We end up at a beautiful, intricate temple with boarding rooms. We’re led inside to a room with bunk beds and tables. Quell immediately calls bottom bunk.
In the evening, Nuru returns with a woman we’ve never met before. She’s the leader of the temple, Liya, the eldest sister.
There’s a caravan staying here as well tonight. Liya suggests that we join them on our way, and insists we do so quickly in the morning, as our belongings “disturb the ghosts”. To the north is a civil war right now, she tells us, not quite by the brine sea but a little east of there. The war started over an heir dispute. She says we should be okay getting to the Brine Sea, as long as we avoid danger along the road. We’re about a week from the first outpost on the way there.
Liya leaves with Nuru after this to “speak further” with her, and we’re left to our own devices. Cali hops on a top bunk, and Jade decides on a top bunk when prompted by Wulf.
We will be moving through some of the civil war territories on the way to the Brine Sea, as pointed out by Jade. She tells us there was an issue with the last Emperor of the Savar empire, because he died and it didn’t go to the heir. That, or it did go to the heir and the people didn’t like who it was. She’s not sure.
Cali says they hope they don’t get caught in the middle of it, and Jade replies sort of bitterly that it’s hard not to. We discuss the idiocies and necessities of civil wars. Wulf is very confused, and Quell doesn’t fully get it either. Cali is quiet.
Jade rolls for knowledge about ghosts. Wulf is very concerned about ghosts sneaking up on us.
We need to find seeds so that when we plant the pearl, it’ll actually work. We need someone to supervise it as well, so we’re considering asking Liya.
