After Uffric leaves, Wulf smells the air behind him and it does smell like the same flowers that were at the summoning site. We all share a look and Cali shuts the door. We tell her what we found at the summoning site - sigils, one footprint and then none, suggesting whoever did it teleported back. Cali tells her that whoever did it could still be in the castle. She asks if we saw anyone at all in the woods and we tell her no. Cali asks if there's anyone who could have or would have done this to her party, or to her in general?
She goes down the list of people she can think of and crosses them off verbally, until she hesitantly mentions her boss, the Jarl. She says it's a sloppier job than "his father" would have done, but she doesn't put it past him. There's been some tension of late, due to her position of power. That said, him sending Uffric to annoy her is "more like him than magic and murder". She tells us it's worth investigation. She tells us which room is his and asks that we turn it upside down and let her know what we find. There will be guards doing this to every room including our own, so he will most likely blame her instead.
We take off and find his room. Cali listens and can't hear anything except someone snoring in the first room, and Wulf doesn't smell anyone nearby either. Quell picks the lock as the OG Urchin and we enter the room. Jade detects magic and is getting some coming off of the smaller of two trunks in the room. It is the only one that has a lock. Quell opens the large trunk and finds a lot of clothes and a clothbound book written in Schildling Runes. Wulf takes a look at it and finds that it's a travel journal. Quell turns to the smaller chest and Jade says the magic is coming from inside the chest, not on the lock itself. With this information, Quell picks that lock too.
There's a faint clicking noise but when nothing else happens, she opens the chest. There's a coin purse, 3 leather flasks (one full, two empty), a clothbound notebook, and a 6 inch crystal sphere. The sphere is blatantly magical and so does the full flask. The other objects seem mundane. Cali is lingering by the closed door keeping watch but rolls a 3 for perception so they don't hear anything. Jade examines the sphere and finds divination magic on it. The flask has illusion magic on it. Quell asks if she thinks it makes you invisible. Jade says she's not sure, then picks up the flask and does the taste test. It is in fact a potion of invisibility.
Quell finds a little peephole out through the hallway and then goes out to the hallway to see if it looks inside. It does, but after a moment she hears footsteps coming up the stairs so she darts back into the room and motions for us to hide. Cali immediately does hide in plain sight and scrunches up under the bed against the wall. Quell takes the invisibility potion and scrunches under the bed beside Cali. Jade quickly arranges the chest to look like it was before, and she tries but fails to re-lock it. She then grabs Wulf and casts Dimension Door. They appear at the bottom of the spiral staircase that Uffric is currently coming up from.
Jade starts making conversation with Wulf about the meeting with Lady Sophie as if we'd just finished up with her, in order to convince him that we were with Lady Sophie this whole time. Dagur is visibly alarmed at their appearance behind him and he says "we prefer if you don't do that in the castle". She apologizes and says "if you have any questions I'm sure Lady Sophie would be happy to answer them, but we have to go back upstairs now thank you!" She grabs Wulf's arm and pulls him up the stairs and tells him to start talking about something. He seems bewildered so she asks him when he's going hunting next. He is very awkward but engages in the conversation and she keeps asking him more questions about it trying to pry a more relaxed convo out of him. She then transitions into talking about wanting to take a bath as they ascend the stairs the rest of the way.
MANS IS HAVING A MELTDOWN. Uffric struggles to get his key in the lock (and thankfully doesn't notice that it's unlocked) and finally is able to get it and shoves the door open. Without closing it behind himself, he collapses against the bed and sobs for a solid 5 minutes. He picks up the small chest and when he realizes the lock is open he drops it and starts having a panic attack, crying and yelling. Jade and Wulf stop in the hallway by his door and Jade knocks on the open door. She gives him a solid "heyyyy, buddy...." and tries to be nice and encourages him to talk about it. He laughs for an uncomfortably long time and she suggests he get a drink. He pulls out a flask in response and guzzles it. He whispers "it wasn't supposed to happen" in Schildling but because Quell is the one that hears him it sounds like "it not, it not" as he cries more. He then yells at Jade to "let a dead man die in peace". He is rude and ignores Jade and Wulf and then grabs the crystal ball out of the chest because we forgot to snag it earlier, and he goes to throw it at Jade but then just drops it on the floor and it does not break.
He keeps talking in what seems like gibberish but about what's happening. He's having a meltdown still, crying about how in a fair fight if someone dies and you didn't know they were already injured you're not a murderer right? and how were they supposed to know? and "never truck with mages". Jade and Wulf try their best to calm him down, but it's so hard to tell if he's speaking in metaphors or if he literally killed someone. He says that "no one was meant to get hurt". He says "I have to tell Anya, she sent Edric with me" and begins fully crying again.
Quell, still invisible, gets out from underneath the bed and speaks: "so what I'm getting here is that you summoned a bunch of things and now people are dead and it wasn't supposed to get this far?"
He falls over in shock and says the bear, maybe, but that was supposed to be the worst of it. He asks quietly who are you? Wulf introduces himself like normal.
