We continue discussing the risks of collecting the shards with Jade. We don’t really come to a conclusion again, but we do head out and get on the leaf boat. We take the river back in the direction of the town that needs fresh water, and when we’ve gone as far as we can in the day, we make camp. It’s muddy everywhere and Jade is miserable. She uses prestidigitation to clean the mud off her shoes. We find an uncovered pavilion with mosaics that Jade is fascinated by, and she detects no magic in the area. Cali detects no undead within a mile, for the first time in awhile. They say it’s safe, and Wulf says that just because there are no undead nearby doesn’t mean it’s safe. Jade says it DOES mean that they’re safe from tentacle monsters though.
Wulf: “...I am tired of tentacle monsters.”
Jade is an art hoe, and uncovers as much of the mosaics as she can so that she can study them. She finds that they’re very old, but have been repaired somewhat recently, after the city turned to ruins, which is weird. She looks more closely at it for awhile, and Wulf looks around too after they talk about the art. He gets distracted though by a rabbit he discovers, and runs off to chase it. Quell suggests that maybe this used to be a shrine, and that’s why it’s been repaired recently. It seems plausible, but it’s hard to tell why. Eventually, we make camp at the pavilion. We use Cali’s blanket to make a blanket fort roof, mostly crafted by Jade, and Cali starts to clean the floor before Jade uses prestidigitation to clean it instantly. Once we’ve made a cozy camp, Quell and Jade start identifying items. The jug is a decanter of endless water, and the silk is a portable hole. There’s a bag of 360gp, and the boots are boots of the winterlands. Cali spends a bit of time sitting with the barnacle covered bracelet they picked up on the river, and eventually puts it back in their bag. We all decide to head to bed, and we start our watch. On Jade’s watch, she hears the distant and unnatural sound of someone singing over by the ruins. Eventually, it fades.
In the morning, Quell goes out to do her morning rituals which are decidedly NOT Mara’s calisthenics, and Cali starts taking their blanket down. Jade cleans it as they do so, with prestidigitation. Wulf goes out to find something for breakfast, ending up with a fat brown bird. Cali casts goodberry and they and Jade both have a berry instead, but Quell splits the bird with Wulf. We head back onto the river after we eat, and eventually, Tasha is ready to talk. She needs to talk to us through still water, so we anchor and put some water in Cali’s goodberry bowl. We talk about the shards, and Egil. There’s a woman called “the orchid woman” who wants the shards. Egil hated her, but she is powerful. Tasha isn’t sure if the notes we’ve been finding from him are talking about her or not, but she says it seems possible. Egil was collecting the shards to hide them again. Tasha also says some skinny boy with snake eyes was looking for us, though he’s been eliminated, and Quell tells her about the woman from the Drian resistance who was looking for us, and the monks we heard were looking for us too.
Quell tells Tasha about a lot of the things that we’ve been finding along the way, and brings up Jade’s point about what we’re supposed to do with the shards because it seems like we’re just doing the work for the people who want the shards. Egil didn’t know how to destroy them, and Quell is worried that we won’t be able to figure it out either, and that the orchid woman will come for us. Tasha does not have the answers for us, but she says we should head to Vlotdok and talk to Egil, because he’s the one that heard the stories and might be able to put us on the right track. Quell asks if we’ll need to go to Nag, and she says we shouldn’t go if we don’t have to, but the orchid woman runs Nag and has for at least 50 years. She says she doesn’t mean to talk down on anyone’s hometown, and Quell says that it was kind of dusty.
Tasha says we’re going to need to take the sea to get to Vlotdok, and when we tell her we’re on a leaf, she says we’ll need something bigger. She says to find him, once we get there we might find him playing in a tavern somewhere, and if not, we should talk around town saying that we have something valuable to sell to someone who actually knows their stuff. Tasha also tells us about a woman that appeared in her magic mirror last night, eyes red as rust and skin grey, and she told her “they’re moving, keep yourself alive. warn the boy.” She didn’t answer when Tasha asked who she was or who the boy was, but this is the first time anyone has ever spoken to her through the mirror. She also called Tasha by her given name, Tasha Ceyan. She hasn’t gone by that name since childhood.
We hang up the water call. Jade changes her mask to give Wulf a look, and we learn that it’s a part of her face that she’s had since birth, and it’s due to a curse but it’s not the curse. We all clearly don’t know much about curses. We talk about the shards more with Jade, and though the three of us seem to come to an understanding, Jade just gets progressively irritated and eventually falls silent. Quell says that if the orchid woman is the reason she had to go away from Nag, she doesn’t want her to have anything. Cali gains perspective upon learning that Quell was forced away from the place she called home, whereas Cali and Wulf both chose to leave.
We float quietly for awhile, and eventually stop to make camp. Wulf catches a rabbit, and Jade tells us all that we need to talk. She tells us that she was contracted by the orchid woman to find the people stealing from the caches, aka us getting the shards. We talk about what that means, and she says that the orchid woman threatened someone she cares about. She doesn’t want to be doing this. We decide we need to talk to T'karri somehow, and maybe eventually kill the orchid woman. We will go find Egil first though, that is still our plan.
