After the combat, we take a look at the boxes against the wall in this room. They hold resources mostly, some empty burlap bags, some salt, some blankets, as well as some potions and money, a journal, and a locked box. In the box is some nonmagical jewelry and a jade ring with a magical aura.
The jade ring is a ring of free action, and Jade says that it should go to Wulf. He officially has more jewelry than any of us. Quell keeps the nonmagical jewelry we found because it's shiny.
Jade casts detect magic and peers down the tunnel leading out of this room. She only senses the same residual traces she did before, and hears the sound of distant dripping water. We head down the tunnel for about 20 minutes and find some stairs and a door frame. The door is hanging halfway off the hinges. Jade investigates the fungus.
The fungus is not actively poisonous but not good to eat. It seems to be the same type of fungus all through this tunnel.
We investigate the door. It leads to another cavern. Jade lights a torch. We see bunk beds and stacks of wood, and hear scuttling sounds of things retreating in the shadows from the torch. The air is thick with the scent of rot and decay. We all enter the room. Jade changes the shape of her mask as she walks in, and Wulf is alarmed when he catches up to her.
There are about a dozen corpses lined against the far wall. A lot of them have been nibbled on, some of them reduced mostly to bones. The bodies, however, are pretty fresh. They seem to have been killed nearby and dragged in here. Wulf remarks that they all have clothes on, and tells us that he didn't used to wear clothes but Stirk made him, and it was very annoying.
Wulf: "are hats clothes?"
Quell: "yes."
Wulf: "are rings clothes?"
Quell: "rings are ornaments."
They talk about what technically constitutes a hat or clothes before Quell tells him that we have important things to look at and we get back on track.
We start to wonder if whoever killed these people is still around, unless we already killed them in the fight we just had, and Quell pokes around the room. She finds a blanket hung up like a curtain, behind which is a corpse of a venom-blooded woman with her throat slit open and otherwise untouched. She was killed at the same time as the others, but most likely was untouched because of her species.
Cali comes and looks at her and tells the group that venom-blooded people are often left untouched by scavengers. They search through the woman's pockets and find nothing interesting. Quell drags her body over with the others and Wulf learns about the dangers of handling a corpse improperly.
Quell washes her hands in a barrel of water, because she's a classy urchin, and Wulf climbs up a ladder that leads to a drop off and another tunnel. It seems safe, so we all follow down it. There are words and pictures on the walls down here. Eventually we come to what looks like the bottom of a trap door, and Jade detects no magic on the trap door.
Quell and Wulf push the trap door open and we climb up into what looks like an old storeroom. It's dusty and hard to tell where we are. The door out of here is latched from the outside, but Wulf gets the door open. We have a discussion about what our plan is, and Quell casts find object but concludes that the shard is not here.
We come across some cells. Quell sends Rabbit to explore, and someone sees him and tells him that he is not a rabbit. They compliment Rabbit's ears and asks him to come back and "bring the lights". The voice sounds like a man, but weak. He speaks in an accented Traders Cant. Someone is crying behind him.
Quell says we should help them, but be cautious. We head inside as quietly as we can. The old man, Bao, was locked up without knowing why, but he talks to ghosts. The woman, Izel, killed a man, but out of self defense. Quell picks the lock to let him free while we talk to them. She fails to pick Izel's lock.
Jade hands one of her teeth to Wulf "in case we get separated". He is confused but adds it to his tooth necklace.
We head down the hall with Bao while Wulf stays behind to yank open Izel's door, because it's going to be loud and it's better if we aren't all there. He yanks it completely off the hinges with his hands and teeth.
There is an alarmed clatter from upstairs before a voice yells:
"What in the forge mother's ass are y'all doing down there?!?!?!"
