Session 34: Do Seagulls Have Fangs?

by Cali Zendyr

As the shadow monster dies, something falls from where he stood in the air, and the light at the top of the lighthouse goes out. Jade casts detect magic and sees heavy necromancy on them, though it is fading. It seems to be the remnants of a broken black pearl, reminiscent of the black pearl we left at the monastery to be destroyed. The pearl seems to have shattered when it dropped, and is now in pieces on the ground. It seems to be destroyed permanently, and we decide not to worry about it. Quell continues looking through the tent she was in before, and finds a round black silk that seems to be magical. Cali looks around the lighthouse to determine how climbable it seems, and Wulf looks around to learn more about the people that were here. Wulf determines that there were "living people here living” who came from down the hill.

Quell comes back out of the tent with a piece of wood she found with a symbol carved onto it, and we go to check out the other hut. Jade detects illusion magic in here, focused around a bundle of cloth. Jade unwraps the cloth, which turns out to be a cloak, and inside it is two things: a wooden recurved bow of pale wood with a crow feather charm hanging from the bottom, and a well worn journal. Jade hands the bow to Cali, who seems surprised and mumbles a thank you, and Jade looks at the journal. Most of it is illegible, largely due to water damage and torn out pages, but Jade reads aloud what she can make out. We get a general sense of the person writing it, and they mention the pearl we found. It also mentions seagulls with three eyes and fangs, and Quell tells us about the seagull with fangs that rabbit saw. He only had 2 eyes though, and we talk about whether it was maybe on the back of its head. Wulf has a crisis about whether or not it would be practical to have eyes on the back of your head.

Quell asks Jade if there’s still necromancy magic on the lighthouse, and Cali lets everyone know that there are still undead nearby. Jade, magical cloak on her arm, looks at the lighthouse with her detect magic and though there is still necromancy there, it doesn’t seem to be stronger inside the lighthouse. She grabs onto Wulf’s arm and puts on the cloak. To the rest of us, it looks like she’s standing 3 feet away from where she is, although Wulf still feels her on his arm. She doesn’t notice anything different. We’re very confused and tell her what’s happening, and Cali goes over to where it looks like she’s standing and pokes her shoulder. Jade doesn’t feel anything and the image doesn’t react. She takes the cloak back off, and we head toward the door.

The door is barred from the inside, and without question, Wulf goes big bad wolf, and he huffs and puffs and kicks the door down. He flies a distance into the room, very proud of himself. He excitedly runs around, looking for more doors to break open. He runs up the stairs to find some, when he discovers none on this level. About 2/3rds of the way up the stairs though, the repairs end and he comes to a rickety wooden ladder and some dangling rope leading to the top level. On the ramshackle top floor, he finds a hunk of metal similar to the first lighthouse in the Meerleander, and some washed away chalk drawings. He also finds a panel on the metal that seems to require a key, and he tries to remove it with his claw. Out of the keyhole, shards of metal shoot at him, but he dodges them and yelps.

Cali: “You…good?”
Wulf: “Yeah. Don’t put your finger in the hole.”
Cali: …………

Downstairs, Jade finds a shrunken corpse in a leather tunic surrounded by crates with magic items in some of them. She immediately studies the journal for clues. Cali comes over to look at it, and figures that he was killed by the shadow creature in the same way it killed the ghosts that were fighting for him. In the corpse’s cold dead hand is a beautiful dagger, which Jade takes, managing to keep from snapping off one of his fingers in the process. He’s also wearing a red gold horse pendant, which doesn’t seem to be magical. Quell comes over and takes it. Jade goes through the crates and finds 40gp, a pair of magical boots, and a magical jug with lillies painted on it. The jug has transmutation magic on it, and Jade wraps it in the cloak and puts it in her bag.

We then join Wulf upstairs, where he’s been standing like a sim with no tasks and free will turned off, waiting for us. We have a very confusing conversation about what happened when Wulf put his finger in the hole, and Jade changes her mask to cover her whole face and detects magic on the lock. It’s necromancy and evocation, and Cali sticks the shitty arrow they stole from an undead awhile ago into the lock. One of the metal shards does manage to cut their hand and does poison damage. Jade knowing what she does about arcane locks tells Cali to wipe their blood on the lock, and when they do, the lock glows and opens. Cali is concerned about being cursed by blood magic now, and Jade tells them that’s not how it works, and asks about the type of poison on the metal. Cali recalls a time they accidentally poisoned theirself while applying poison to an arrow.

The compartment is opened, and we find a small nonmagical bronze bell with geometric shapes on it, a cold crystal shard, and some rolled up parchment that says “If you’re here, that means you killed her. But you’re a fool if you think she didn’t plan for it. -Egil”

Quell ties the bell around her thunderstick and ties a ribbon around the middle so it won’t jingle for now. Jade asks us why we’re collecting the shards and what we intend to do once we find them all, and why it’s better for us to collect them than anyone else. We try to convey our plan but end up a bit confused, so Quell sends Tasha a message asking what to do next, and for any news. Tasha is surprised we’re alive, and will update us no later than tomorrow when she can locate a wizard to communicate with us. Quell sends her another message telling her we’re heading out of Armos and will be on the road tomorrow. Tasha says she’ll be in touch and to get out safe, and that Varanna, her wife, sends her best.
