The United States of America, Federal Republic

Theme:

Introduction

The great American Experiment, it stood for hundreds of years but in the 2030's ended with a faint whimper. The Current US, baring it's same name but is nothing like the Republic that came before it. America was envisioned as a Nation for the Free, where all are equal under god. Instead it was a failure and a lie, corrupted by greed and excessive power.   A Society where one could live the American Dream in peace no matter who they are was an ideal that never became reality and might never be a reality. It's a sad, depressing tale of a idealistic dream, intoxicated and killed by cancerous ideologies and an increasingly apathetic society. It became a nation of false hopes as companies got increasingly richer and more powerful at the expense of the nation.   A nation that failed it's most vulnerable and left them to dry. A Nation that uttered Martin Luther King's name in vein while steadily failing to live up even to the basics of his dream. An Economy that failed to revolutionize for decades, instead becoming a toxic corporatism machine that only further exploited the suffering populace while dividing them into divisive political camps between Democrats and Republicans.   It promised Liberation and Freedom, rather then implementing a foreign policy that'd continue to aid and help other nations grow and thrive in their own ways America became selfish and exploitative. Leading to the most devastating world wars in human history that dwarfed the devastation and scope of both World War 1 & 2.   Ultimately? What truly killed America was Americans giving up on the Dream, the America Martin Luther King and various other inspiration figures envisioned. They gave up on trying to make the world a better place.   Evil wins, when good men do nothing...and in this case, no one did anything.

Government

America was a Federal Republic, with a Federal system where states were semi autonomous and were able to decide authority in their own states with the Federal Republic being broken up into 3 main branches and all of it was under the US Constitution and enforced by the supreme court as well as a labyrinthian set of departments and committees that handled the many arms and duties of the government at the time.   Uniquely the US was a Novel Government with two well known examples prior, Being The Greek and Roman Republics and a few other lesser known republics across the whole world. Famed as one of the most stable democracies for a long time but eventually ended up becoming corrupt and tyrannical thanks to flaws in it's design it inherited from the foundation.

Paper vs. Reality

In this era there was a lot of papers, rules and laws that regulated everything. Instead of outright ignoring documents and laws like It's successor government, shady deeds and abuses were filtered through a strict and thorough system that increasingly failed to regulate the excesses of Authority, on the paper it was one of the more sophisticated governments in the world but in reality it was a fairly lawless system and didn't end up serving the people very well.

Separation of Powers

Every office in the government had some degree of separation from each other, the intent of this was to reduce the power a central authority could actually wield. However in practice it was not as efficient as it could of been. Through the many, many years of the Republic's existence there was era of democratization that came to a end by the end of FDR's presidency where power was centralized into a singular place, the White House.   The system also failed to regulate due to the pervasive nature of money in politics, allowing organizations to essentially own offices they have no right to, through the use of Influence and mainly money.

Advantages

Despite the Big money, corruption and centralization of all power, America did possess powerful legal tools such as local courts that could swiftly change policies in states and undo tyranny and was used effectively in prior eras but less so in the Twilight years. The separation of powers and both the 1st and 2nd Amendments were also effective tools against government overreach in their areas but were not extensive enough.   The Supreme Court was another advantage as it was the engine that helped materialized progress but in later era's became ineffectual and incapable of regulating the government.

Militant Governance

While not initially a part of the framework for America's governance, groups like the FBI, CIA, NSA and ATF became very involved in government, actively trying to push out influence that was counter to 'National Interests'. This was furthered by the increasing role that the Pentagon played in government under Henry House. Including gaining a proper position within the Federal Government with authority over Federal affairs.

Law and Enforcement

Designed for Civilian enforcement through the police, America was not allowed to deploy forces on US soil without good reason but eventually the Police began a process of militarization after waves of crime devastated the county during the War on Drugs. Police also didn't have duty to the people and served as the main enforcers of government authority, a role they increasingly became better at.   During the 2020's the Military became the main enforces, integrating with police and normalizing Martial law that was supposed to be temporary due to emergency conditions but the end never came.

Voting System

America had the Electoral College, Voting Institutions and Anti Fraud Departments and any wide spread Fraud was news worthy enough to render national panic and outage, which in the current world. Was not uncommon, this was eventually lost as voting security declined rapidly towards the end of the 2020's.

Military

America was one of the world's biggest militaries that had the benefit of deep pockets thanks to Tax funding, Contracts and more. Able to afford some of the most expensive and Novel technology. It also had one of the most complex branches. Where normally most militaries were split between Land, Air and Sea, America was divided into multiple army types so distinctive that many Marines refused to be called soldiers.   However for all the newness in the Military it was still prone to the flaws of all the worlds armies and frequently suffered from internal fractures and a privileged Officer Corps, however small in earlier ages, through the 2020's the caste system overtook the military where Officers were chosen class of high born and highly educated elites with the lower ranks effectively becoming cannon fodder.   This ended up costing the US Military a lot in conflicts leading up to World War 3 and then during it, where it got savaged to pieces by the British and French led European Army.

Doctrine

The US Military used to favour strategical warfare but this eventually only ended up encompassing the Special Forces which saw an era of growth and expansion. As for the regulars, America adopted a Shock and Awe approach, fielding massive armeis and vast fleets of vehicles and flashy large armies and mass deployments. This is a regression of prior Developments and was mainly done to equalize force with foreign Adversaries who ended up becoming fair weather allies.   General Casualty rates went up while training quality of every day troops declined with some forces not complying with the new Doctrine, they would end up becoming renegade forces in the future. Other strategies changed too, while precision bombing was optimal for effectiveness, the military ended up adopting total war tactics and did mass bombing such as the Battle for Paris where America totally devastated entire sections of the city with MOABs and other ballistic missiles as well as napalm which saw a huge return in the late 2020's.   The mobility never was lost though, maintaining maximum mobility the US Military often over extended themselves in later years and left over Renegades became very, very common especially in units who displayed more defiant and free thinking tendencies.

The Stormtrooper Phenomena

As the US Military became more absolutist and authoritarian, Free Thinking and Self Determination took a nose dive which made US Troops increasingly more dependent on command eventually the Doctrine changes resulted in US Soldiers preforming poorly, shooting poorly but maintaining absolute and ridiculous obedience to the government with formations like the Marines refusing to obey this change, becoming exceptions to the Phenomena.   This absolute loyalty made the Shadow Government much more powerful but worsened US performance against the individualistic and self determined Free European Armies. Part of what made the US so weak to the BAF, RAF and various other British Forces was over standardization leading to some units being poorly equipped and adapted to their battlefields with officers essentially unwitting to report inefficiencies in the Military.   Thus eventually loyalist American Forces became known as Stormtroopers, with British Soldiers likening them to the fictional soldiers of the Galactic Empire at every turn.

Privatization

Companies, specifically Maxwell became far more involved in the military as the 2020's went on with Maxwell becoming the Military's primary supplier of arms and ammo, Food, Water, Electricity, Electronic goods, Vehicles and just about any need you could think of. This meant the Company had a ridiculous amount of control over the Military and in some circumstances overruled the Shadow Government and the Pentagon which ended up benefiting military later.   That said it was never easier then in those days to profit from endless war during the time. This also meant the US Military funding nearly exclusively went to a Single Company and obviously caused ridiculous corruption.

Corruption

Towards the Declining Days, there was massive and I mean massive profits to be made from officer corps and generalship with companies directly influencing the decisions of the military with their money. Entire arsenals were changed to fit Maxwell's bottom line. Embezzlement and other forms of corruption also became very common leading to crippling flaws in the military and it's ability to adapt as it was normally more profitable to ignore problems then report them.

Economy

This at the time was one of the world's largest economy's but one marked with failure to provide for the populace and had major issues that led to the end of the Republic. America is self sufficient however often exported it's labour to poorer nations in order to score max profits with unethical but cheap labour. It was also an economy that was very much influenced by the cold war resulting in a radicalization of the Economic theory of Capitalism, becoming so extreme that it was so toxic that there was no true competition turning money into a high score game rather then as a tool to get stuff done.

Living and Medical Standards

America had a GDP of 21 USD Trillion in 2019 yet massive portions of the country lived in barely acceptable situations. Americans often had enough money to fulfill short term desires but none to invest or build anything. Causing lag in generational profits and in so doing led to degradation of living standards as the average American was worse off each year with the rich being better off at the same time.   Universal Basic Healthcare never reached reality, meaning that any number of medical complication led to what 2070's economist call the 'Insidious Blackhole'. Stagnating Wages and rising costs across the board drained the country of money and centralized it at the top. Eventually making the wealth gap between Americans irreparable without radical economic change that never came.

Declining Productivity

As a result of losing opportunity, Boomers retiring and Corporate Power running amok. America reported declining GDP until 2026 when the economy began turning into the Neo American Economy people in the 2070's know now. There was very little upwards mobility but zero sponsorship systems meaning that no one got anywhere with the Rich and Powerful dwindling and money falling into fewer and fewer hands.   Retiring also caused a massive brain drain as no one was left to replace what was lost and very few new minds rising to the top, leading to total stagnation. By 2026 the US GDP was 17 Trillion which is a severe downgrade and at the time showed no signs of slowing down.

Corporatism

Capitalist Economies are meant to produce more Product and Capital through competition and meritocracy with each generation being progressively more developed and well off with each generation but as the separation of State and Business shrunk, so did any idea of true Competition. Rather then as a tool, it was a life style, a grind set which fundamentally destroyed the system's ability to produce and maximized it's ability to take.   State and Corporate bodies became intertwined with massive monopolies controlling everything. The economy as a result was crippled and could only ever decline into the despotic absolutist system of Dog eats dog and a total atomization of community and belonging. This is referred to as essentially late stage Capitalism and indeed is the fate of all capitalist Economies run amok. Capitalism should always be a tool and never a life style.
