Jupiter

Welcome to Solaris, traveller! This is a slower-than-light science fantasy set in our own solar system.
About Solaris | Guide to Solaris | Prologue
Countless moons orbit Jupiter, the self-proclaimed cradle of civilization. Internal trouble has kept the Jovians focused inwards, handling a succession of wars for lunar independence known as Catamite Wars. Now that these wars have been decisively ended, the Great Cyclops again turns their eye outwards.

The Senate of Old

The Jovian Senate is one of the oldest institutions in the entire system, functioning in much the same way as it has for millenia. Some may argue that is an indictment rather than something to be proud of. The Patricians continue to reign with an iron fist, much to the dismay of the moons. While the moons have been granted nominal freedoms like recognizing them as independent lunar bodies, the Catamite Wars seem to have made little real impact. In all matters of foreign affairs they remain under Jovian jurisdiction.   The Senate is also deeply interwoven with the Jovian faith. While the Imperial Cult has waned, the practice of worshipping the patricians and especially the fathers of Keystones, their shrines remain, now dubbed statues or monuments instead. Monuments are still being built today to commemorate their impact and accomplishments, provoking some to ask how this is meaningfully different from the old forms of reverence.   The most clear link between the faith and the senate is the Keystone, the Holy Daughter of Jupiter, who serves as the head of the religion. Although she has no political power, she exalts her family into the Patriciate class by her ascension, which allows them to become landowners and senators in their own right.

From Megalomania to Megafauna

The same way the eternal Red Storm blazes it's own path across the planet, the massive beasts of Jove carve deep grooves into the thick woodlands of Jupiter. The planet is well known for its megafauna. These great Jovian beasts thrive in the near endless wilderness. Aviasaurs dominate both sky and land.   Many of these megafauna are also in display at the great Jovian Natural History Museum.

I love Jupiter and it's old institutions <3 "Some may argue that is an indictment rather than something to be proud of. " XD XD   Shame for those poor keystones to not have power themselves but for their family to gain all of it :( Do they accept this easily or do they try to influence what's going on anyway?   I'm suddenly curious about that great storm. It must be very messy when it arrives on top of a city and stays there for a really long time - centuries I guess?

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy that sentence, I like it too. The attitude probably varies from Keystone to Keystone, I'm sure some were dutiful daughters, while others had quite a lot to say about it all.   As for the great storm, I assume it's one of those things you have to prepare for and work around if you want to live at the latitude it circles. I haven't quite looked into how fast the red spot travels, and how I might adapt it for Solaris beyond it being an eternal storm. It's the level of research that wouldn't play well with getting stuff done this month ^^'

I love it! Of course my favourite part are the megafauna though xD I hope we get to see some art of this planet and its species some time, I'm definitely curious to see what the aviasaurs look like! Great work, and have a great christmas!

I hope you have a great day!   Explore the endless planets brimming with life of the Yonderverse! Go after creatures, discover new places, and learn about the people you find along the way.   Consider voting for me in the Worldbuilding Awards!

Thank you so much, and merry christmas to you too! I hope to get to them eventually, but i fear it might be a while until the spotlight lands on Jupiter.

Indeed it does! For Solaris I took a lot of inspiration from stories from before we knew much about what the other planets were like, and didn't worry too much about realism. Other people can make realistic scifi way better than I can anyways, so why not have fun with it?
