Brontide Cliffs

The Brontide Cliffs are located on the coast between the Mere of Dead Men and Neverwinter in the Neverwinter Region.

The most notable landmark of the Brontide Cliffs is the Tower of Storms, a former lighthouse that became the home of ancient blue dragon Razaycrynth and, later, his dragonborn descendants the Light of Razaycrynth. Razaycrynth also had a small tribe of blue-skinned kobold servants who lived in the Brontide Caves near the Tower of Storms, and they still reside in those caves today.

Campaign Recap

Rayphlard Dreams of Razaycrynth (1 Mirtul)

In the early morning hours of 1 Mirtul, Rayphlárd woke up from a dream in which he was visited by his blue dragon ancestor Razaycrynth and warned about a crisis at the Tower of Storms (for more details, visit the Razaycrynth page).

Based on what Rayphlard was told in the dream - and what Collateral Damage learned about Velleen Firecrow after surviving her attempted ambush later that morning (for more details, visit the Velleen Firecrow page) - the group and their new ally Don-Jon Raskin decided to travel west to the Tower of Storms on the Brontide Cliffs.

Crisis at the Brontide Cliffs (2-3 Mirtul)

Warned by Aarakocra

On the morning of 2 Mirtul, Collateral Damage continued traveling west toward the coast. When they got close to the cliffs, they saw a lightning storm brewing at sea and centered around the Tower of Storms. As they continued approaching the cliffs, eight aarakocra members of the nearby Qoolushi Tribe flew to them and landed near them. The aarakocra warned the group, saying:

"Turn around. Stairs not safe. Invisible guardian. Tower not safe. Storm worshipers. Lightning rituals kill."

Stalker at the Cliffs

When Collateral Damage arrived at the edge of the Brontide Cliffs on 2 Mirtul, they saw the Tower of Storms, but the rain still made it difficult to see all the details.

They could make out several figures of varying heights standing in an outdoor area to the south of the building. They also saw a green, pulsing light at the top of the tower. With each pulse of the light, they could hear a low, dull thumping sound coming from the light source. Finally, they saw a large lightning rod on the roof of the building, pointing to the sky. The group discussed their options, and they decided to descend the cliffs using a feather fall spell from Herb Stoner.

While the group fell slowly through the air, Rayphlárd and Tubby were shoved into the cliffside by an invisible stalker. During the encounter, Herb connected with a fireball spell, and Don-Jon lit up the stalker with a faerie fire spell. The group survived the attack, with Shinzon Greenshadow landing the killing blow.

Entering the Kobold Caves

After surviving the attack by the invisible stalker, Collateral Damage again looked to the Tower of Storms, this time seeing several shipwrecks on the opposite side of the rocky outcropping. They also had a more clear view of the figures standing outside the building; they could now make out three black-skinned kobolds holding spears and four other individuals with their hands tied behind their backs.

After the kobolds dragged one of the captives into the building, they looked down to the cliffs and saw the adventurers. As that was happening, a blue-skinned kobold appeared out of a cave in the cliffside, calling out "Rayphlard, is that you?" and motioning for the group to join him. The group sprinted into the caves, avoiding several crossbow bolts fired by the black-skinned kobolds outside the tower.

After crossing a line in the sand into the Brontide Caves, a blue-skinned kobold inside a shipwreck in the cave slammed a button inside an interior chamber. The group then heard a second invisible stalker approach quickly, but it slammed into a wall of force over the line in the sand (for more details about their time inside the caves, visit the Brontide Caves page).

History

Before the ancient blue dragon Razaycrynth made his home in the area, the caves at the base of the Brontide Cliffs were a haven for pirates, smugglers, and legitimate seafaring vessels looking for a safe place to wait out coastal storms. The lighthouse that later became the Tower of Storms was built by a merchant guild from Neverwinter, as they sought to protect their ships sailing down the coast to various southern locations.
