Growing Up
Herb grew up in Longwood. As the second oldest sibling in a large and loving family, he spent much of his youth raising his younger siblings. Due to their humble lifestyle, they learned to use what they had, which wasn't much. They never wasted an opportunity to make a few coins.
Herb grew up believing Grumpy Stoner and his wife to be his birth parents. Herb noticed he was a bit different than his family, and then as Herb was about to move out to attend Golden Coast College, Grumpy told Herb that he was adopted. Grumpy didn’t go into any details, so Herb doesn’t know who his parents were. Herb was surprised at this news but not overwhelmed. He always felt like he was a part of the Stoner family, and his parents were loving and kind to all people. One of his siblings – a dragonborn named Devil’s Lettuce – was also adopted.
College Years
One year while Herb was attending Golden Coast College in Longwood, he and some friends took a spring break trip to Neverwinter. While exploring the city, the group stumbled into Raphaella Umber's underground crypt.
Raphaella surprised the group, rising up out of her coffin and trapping Herb and his friends. Raphaella let them leave with their lives if they agreed to do something for her. She demanded that they use their magical abilities to find a location important to her. She told them to find an underground fortress called the "Sunless Citadel."
Raphaella didn't know where the Sunless Citadel was; she only knew its name. She explained that her lover, a man named Gulthias, went missing many years ago, and she thought that whatever happened to him happened at the Sunless Citadel. She told them that if they could figure out where the Sunless Citadel was, she would give them a great reward.
Later, when Herb was studying back in Longwood, he happened to find a book with a list of locations of mysterious magical power that were lost to history, and the Sunless Citadel was on that list. The only info the author had was the fortress' name, plus a map of its layout. The fortress seemed to have been built around a massive tree that grew up from the underground level, and the author speculated that the tree had some kind of magical power.

Education
Herb attended Golden Coast College to study history, languages and the arcane. He studied a variety of offensive, defensive and utility spells, in addition to the communication spells he naturally possessed as a Mark of Scribing gnome.
He was fascinated by wizardry, but he didn’t have a spark for it until his first experience with mushrooms. He grew up learning about mushrooms being used for different effects, including focus, euphoria and hallucinations, but there were many varieties he didn’t yet know about that had magical properties. One mushroom in particular was known as the “1-Up” mushroom; it was originally discovered by two brothers named Mario and Luigi. When thinking about his education, Herb wishes he had magical abilities when he was younger to tease his siblings.

Herb believes in the power of knowledge. For any information he doesn’t already know, he knows where and from whom to find it. He is a master of languages, and he is gifted at calligraphy and forgery.

Herb had a couple of "lasses" back in Longwood that he was interested in settling down with, but they didn't want to have little gnomes running around. He looks forward to being a father someday.
During his first year at Golden Coast College, he met a kobold named Kremzik Darkchewer, and the two of them quickly became each other's nemesis.
Family Ties
Herb's parents - Grumpy Stoner and Grumpy's wife - were from "well-to-do" families, but they loved each other and the peaceful tranquility of Longwood. They were the "hippy" type. Although Stoner is their family name, they would never cast the first one.
Herb was one of 12 siblings in the Stoner family. The siblings, oldest to youngest, are Kush, Herb, Mary, Jane, Ganja, Grass, Pot, Hasshish, Skunk, Maui Wowie, Reefer and Devil's Lettuce. Devil's Lettuce is dragonborn and was adopted into the family, but he may as well be blood related.
