On 7 Mirtul, Amethyst used what she learned about the staff at the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn and snuck into Raphaella's office. Visit the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn page for more details.

Amethyst Returns to Leilon to Investigate Raphaella (16-22 Mirtul)

Garaele Gives Amethyst the Keys (16 Mirtul)

On 6 Mirtul, Collateral Damage stopped at Wave Echo Cave during their journey from Icespire Peak to Phandalin. While the group rested at the cave, Garaele Edermath found Amethyst Mountainbender.

Garaele explained that she and her grandfather Daran returned to the Rockseeker Camp in Phandalin to take a closer look at where the vampire spawn Argus Skeel was living. While there, they found a set of keys with the logo of the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn in Leilon. Garaele knew that Amethyst was seeking more info about Raphaella (and Kairos), so she gave her the keys. Amethyst decided to start traveling to Leilon alone the following day.

Raphaella Traps Amethyst (18-22 Mirtul)

On 18 Mirtul, Amethyst Mountainbender arrived in Leilon in the evening.

In the early morning hours of 19 Mirtul, before sunrise, Amethyst disguised herself in her dwarf persona and went searching for Zana Taylish of the Cult of Talos, hoping to confront her about Thinshu going missing. Amethyst was instead surprised by three individuals who grappled her, put a hood over her head, and carried her away to the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn; they released her on 22 Mirtul. Visit the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn page for more details.

Before, During and After the Battle of Leilon (22-24 Mirtul)

Chaos at the House of Thalivar (22 Mirtul)

On 22 Mirtul, Collateral Damage and Gallio Elibro attempted to prepare the planar beacon at the House of Thalivar to defend Leilon against the expected invasions the following day, but they instead unleashed several aberrations within the tower. The adventurers survived and slayed the aboleth and beholder, but Gallio died within the Ethereal Plane.

Later in the day, while Collateral Damage was trying to help rally the town together to defend themselves, Amethyst Mountainbender was approached by one of Raphaella's assistants. They said "Raphaella wants to know what happened to Gallio, and what happened at the tower? Did something happen with the Ruinstone?" Amethyst told them what happened, including the fact that the Ruinstone was still in its place within the planar beacon on the Ethereal Plane.

Taris Can't Retrieve the Ruinstone (23 Mirtul)

On 23 Mirtul, during the Battle of Leilon, Collateral Damage defeated the dracolich Ebondeath, but Ebondeath kicked against the House of Thalivar, causing the tower to crash into multiple nearby buildings.

After the smoke cleared, Taris Greenshadow and her Shadar-kai ally Vezo emerged from the rubble. Taris looked in the direction of Ebondeath's body, thinking he was still alive. Taris shouted "Ebondeath! Wake up! Raphaella lied! She told us the wrong command word (for the Ruinstone)!"

Raphaella Abandons the Inn (23-24 Mirtul)

On 23 Mirtul, in the aftermath of the Battle of Leilon, Rayphlárd reunited with his family, the Light of Razaycrynth.

His family told him that they checked on the nearby Umber Hulk's Shell Inn, but the inn was empty of all valuables, and there was no sign of Raphaella Umber. They did, however, discover the hidden door to the basement, but the basement was guarded by some kind of magical trap.

On 24 Mirtul, Collateral Damage decided to investigate the inn.

Personal history

Gulthias, Kairos and the Eruption of Mount Hotenow

Before the eruption of Mount Hotenow in 1451, Raphaella was the leader of a mercenary guild in Neverwinter. During that time, the Red Wizards of Thay were planning to expand their influence into the Neverwinter region. They hoped to establish a base of operations there, and they were considering killing or enslaving the dwarven population of Gauntlgrym and using that location. They hired Raphaella's mercenary guild to scout the Neverwinter Wood and relay information back to them about the surrounding area. Gulthias (Raphaella's husband) took the job, but he never came back.

In 1451, Taris Greenshadow contacted the mercenary guild. Taris hired them to find a location called the "Sunless Citadel" and steal a dragon egg. That name "Sunless Citadel" reminded Raphaella of her husband Gulthias. She remembered that Gulthias told her that he had read about a place with that name, that he started having dreams in which his destiny was linked to that mysterious place. After remembering all of that, Raphaella suspected that Gulthias had found the Sunless Citadel and stayed there, so she sent their adopted son Kairos to go find it. Kairos then brought Amethyst, Azrael, Knismizo and Thimble with him on that mission. Visit the Sunless Citadel page for more details.

When Mount Hotenow erupted, Raphaella feared the worst, but she couldn't confirm it. She sensed that Gulthias still existed somewhere, and she felt the same about Kairos. As time went on, she wondered if she just convinced herself of that as a way to keep going and not lose hope. The eruption destroyed much of Neverwinter, including her mercenary business. She hid away for decades, feeding on the survivors on the surface every now and then, and then retreating back to her grief.

Raphaella's Encounter With Herb

One year while Herb Stoner was attending Golden Coast College in Longwood, he and some friends took a spring break trip to Neverwinter. While exploring the city, the group stumbled into Raphaella's underground crypt.

Raphaella surprised the group, rising up out of her coffin and trapping Herb and his friends. Raphaella let them leave with their lives if they agreed to do something for her. She demanded that they use their knowledge as wizards to find a location important to her. She told them to find an underground fortress called the "Sunless Citadel."

Raphaella didn't know where the Sunless Citadel was; she only knew its name. She explained that her lover, a man named Gulthias, went missing many years ago, and she thought that whatever happened to him happened at the Sunless Citadel. She told them that if they could figure out where the Sunless Citadel was, she would give them a great reward.

Working With the Red Wizards

In 1487, the Red Wizards of Thay found Raphaella. They told her that if she worked for them as a spy in Leilon, they would reveal to her the location of the Sunless Citadel after they completed a long-term project.

Raphaella agreed, and the Red Wizards provided her with enough gold to start a business in Leilon. She bought an abandoned inn in Leilon and reopened it as the Umber Hulk's Shell Inn.
