House of Thalivar

The House of Thalivar is the rebuilt mage tower in Leilon currently run by Gallio Elibro.

Purpose / Function

The House of Thalivar in Leilon is currently the headquarters for the Leilon Town Guard (led by captain Hazz Yorum) and the town mage Gallio Elibro. The first two floors are used by the town guard and Leilon's military forces, and the top two floors are used by Gallio.

The Ruinstone and the Planar Beacon

The House of Thalivar was originally built in 1292 by the wizard Thalivar. According to Gallio Elibro, Thalivar built a device called a "planar beacon" on the top floor of the tower. The beacon used the magic of an artifact called the Ruinstone to open connections to other planes of existence, trap monsters from those planes, and bring them back to the Material Plane to study.

According to Gallio, the catastrophic events of the Spellplague in 1385 changed how the Ruinstone and planar beacon worked. The Ruinstone was previously built into a spire within the tower's top floor, but the magic of the Spellplague shifted the spire and the Ruinstone into the plane where the beacon was aimed, which happened to be the Abyss at that time.

After Gallio arrived in Leilon in 1486, he studied Thalivar's notes and repaired the planar beacon so that he could redirect it to any plane of existence; however, the Ruinstone remained atop the spire within whichever plane that was the target of the planar beacon's aim.

Architecture

The House of Thalivar is notable in Leilon both due to its size and its age; the tower is 80 feet tall - four times taller than any other building in town - and it is one of the few structures that survived the town's destruction during the Spellplague in 1385.

The tower sits on a rocky plateau. A grant portico once abutted the building to the west, but it fell long ago and only a few broken arches of masonry remain. Arched doorways lead into the entry hall.

Since the destruction of the town in 1385, the top of the tower has been permanently enveloped in a cloud of heavy mist no matter the time or day, leading some to speculate that it may be connected to the Domains of Dread. Residents of Leilon warn their children about the mist at the top of the tower, and stories have spread about people climbing to the top of the tower on a dare and then never being seen again.

History

The House of Thalivar in Leilon was originally built in 1292 by a wizard named Thalivar. According to the current town mage Gallio Elibro:

"The destruction of Leilon back during the Spellplague in 1385 was mostly a mystery, but I've learned more about what Thalivar was doing.

"On the fourth floor, he built what he called a ‘planar beacon,’ and he did so by using an artifact called the Ruinstone. The Ruinstone allows an individual to travel the planes of existence and bypass any magical barriers. So, Thalivar constructed this beacon to use the magic of the Ruinstone and trap and paralyze monsters from other planes. Thalivar would then enter those planes of existence, bring those monsters back to the Material Plane, and study them.

“The details aren’t clear about what happened on the day that Leilon was destroyed in 1385. What we know is that a horde of demons escaped the top floor, rushing into the town and destroying buildings and killing anyone they could find. The town had a brave adventuring party known as the Swords of Leilon, and they tried to fight off the demons, but there were too many, and the Swords of Leilon perished that day."
