Domains of Dread
The Domains of Dread, also known collectively as "Ravenloft," are rumored to be isolated areas within the Shadowfell that were created as prisons for evildoers.
Localized Phenomena
Monster hunters who claim to have visited and returned from the Domains of Dread reported that they were initially trapped there by what they called the "Mists of Ravenloft." They also reported that returning from Ravenloft is possible, but extremely difficult, and each individual reported a different method through which they returned.
Of the adventurers who have returned, they all reported one phenomenon in common: each domain is ruled by an all-powerful Dark Lord, an individual who seemed to have simultaneously been imprisoned within the domain but been granted complete control over it.
In "How to Fight a Monster," a book by monster hunter Knismizo, he gave the following warnings to anyone entering Ravenloft:
- If possible, enter well-rested. There’s no guarantee that once you’re there, you’ll be able to get a good night’s sleep.
- Death is especially dangerous. Your soul may be trapped within the mists surrounding the domain, unable to reach the afterlife.
- Magic that teleports you to - or lets you communicate with entities in - other planes may not work as intended. Only use such magic if you have no other options.
History
The Domains of Dread are also known collectively as "Ravenloft" because the rumored first domain was Barovia, a realm that is reportedly still ruled by the the vampire Strahd von Zarovich from his fortress known as "Castle Ravenloft."
