Golden Coast College Bibloplex

Within the Golden Coast College Biblioplex, the school's archivist keeps a book with a list of locations of mysterious magical power that were lost to history.

One of the locations highlighted in the book is the Sunless Citadel, although the section in the book only includes the fortress' name and a map of its layout. The map clearly shows that the fortress was built around a massive tree that grew up from the underground level, and the archivist included notes speculating that the tree had some kind of magical or historical significance.

History

Strixhaven University was founded in the fourth century DR by the leaders of multiple families in Longwood. All of the founders were high elf wizards from House Grenan except Lukpac Stoner, a gnome wizard from the Stoner Family.

They picked its location due to the unique nature of magic in the area, highlighted by Feywild crossings, gravity-defying star arches, and magical snarls (described in detail on the Longwood page).

The Founding of the College Turns Violent

Shortly after the opening of the school, administrators discovered that House Grenan included language in the college charter that banned all gnomes from being in the administration or attending classes. During a board meeting, Lukpac Stoner confronted Venali Grenan - president of the university and head of House Grenan - and made his case to the other founders. The argument soon turned violent.

Venali and House Grenan attacked first, surprising Lukpac and the others in attendance. Lukpac and several other members of the Stoner Family died in the attack, but Lukpac's brother Shibble turned the fight in their favor. Venali and the rest of House Grenan did not concede, and they died at the hands of Shibble and the elven administrators in attendance. One member of House Grenan - Belanor Grenan - did not participate in the violence, but the rest of the administration banished him from Longwood along with his friend Ivaran Holabella.

The Stoner Family remained a part of the college's administration - Shibble took over for Lukpac on the board - but the events involving House Grenan left their mark on the college. Gnomes were permitted to attend the college and serve in the administration, but few did. The Stoner Family continued to stay involved with the college, but most gnomes wanted little to do with it. The university administrators did try to help the community move on from the actions of House Grenan, renaming the school to "Golden Coast College," an informal name that had been used primarily by the gnomes.

Razaycrynth and the Infernal Incursion

Later in the school's history, mages and diviners at the college forsaw an infernal incursion. They hired adventurers - including the group of Charlie, Raynier, Rickett, Shig and Zilbo - to guard certain areas of campus.

One evening, each location at the school that featured the crest of House Grenan began glowing red, tearing open portals to the Nine Hells of Baator. Devils began entering campus, claiming to be there on behalf of Mephistopheles, Lord of Cania. The devil representatives explained that Venali Grenan had signed a contract to sell ownership of the school to Mephistopheles, and they were there to take what they rightfully owned.

When the school representatives and their hired adventurers refused to concede, violence broke out across campus. At that moment, the blue dragon Razaycrynth - who was scouting the Neverwinter Wood for potential new lairs - spotted the incursion. He joined in defending the college against the devils, eventually toppling the statue of Venali Grenan in the Archway Commons and closing the portals.

Later, after Razaycrynth had established the Tower of Storms on the Brontide Cliffs as his lair - and had acquired the service of a tribe of kobolds - Razaycrynth returned to Golden Coast College. He spoke to the college board and requested they admit one of his kobold assistants as a student. The college leaders agreed to create the "Razaycrynth Scholarship," allowing one kobold servant of Razaycrynth to attend the college at a time.
