Cult of Talos

The Cult of Talos is devoted to Talos, the god of storms and destruction.

Campaign Recap

Velleen Firecrow in Phandalin (30 Tarsakh-1 Mirtul)

On 30 Tarsakh, Collateral Damage returned to Phandalin. They were approached by Halia Thornton, the guildmaster of the Phandalin Miners' Exchange and agent of the Zhentarim, and Halia warned them about Velleen Firecrow, the new assistant manager at the Lionshield Coster.

Halia suspected Velleen was affiliated with the Cult of Talos, and the adventurers later confirmed that fact. Velleen attempted to ambush Collateral Damage with her kobold servants, but she died in the encounter (for more details, visit the Velleen Firecrow page).

Tower of Storms (1-3 Mirtul)

In the early morning hours of 1 Mirtul, Rayphlárd woke up from a dream in which he was visited by his blue dragon ancestor Razaycrynth who warned him about a crisis at the Tower of Storms (for more details, visit the Razaycrynth page).

Based on what Rayphlard was told in the dream - and what Collateral Damage learned about Velleen Firecrow after surviving her attempted ambush later that morning - the group decided to travel west to the Tower of Storms on the Brontide Cliffs (for more details, visit the Brontide Cliffs page).

Structure

The cult is known to include humans, orcs, half-orcs, kobolds, invisible stalkers, elementals, minotaurs and tanarukks. Some of the cultists - notably some of the half-orc anchorites and black-skinned kobolds - have been revealed to have had shapeshifter abilities.

Culture

Some of the cultists have been seen wearing black and gold robes, custom Talassan plate armor, and/or pendants of the holy symbol of Talos.

History

The Sunless Citadel, an underground fortress in Thundertree, was the original headquarters for the Cult of Talos. Cultists built the fortress in that location near the Neverwinter Wood so that it would be both hidden from the general population and have an area that was open to the elements. Through that open area, they conducted lightning rituals to honor Talos. They captured individuals traveling through the area, brought them to the citadel, and forced them to pledge their allegiance to Talos. If they didn’t, they killed them in lightning rituals.

A vampire named Gulthias entered the citadel, traveling in his mist form and witnessing a lightning ritual. The cultists spotted Gulthias, surrounded him and killed him with a wooden stake directly on the ritual site. The stake fused with the magic of the ritual site and grew into a massive undead tree.

The Talassans became distracted by the Gulthias Tree, some worshipping it more than Talos. Talos commanded his followers to leave the citadel and create a new headquarters, which he called the "Circle of Thunder." Not all of the cultists followed his commands; some stayed at the Sunless Citadel and worshipped the tree instead, and they built the beginnings of the village that would later be named "Thundertree."
