Halia Thornton
Halia Thornton
Halia Thornton, a human woman, is the guildmaster of Phandalin Miner's Exchange. Halia is also secretly is an agent for The Zhentarim.
Halia vs. the Redbrands
On Day 4 of the campaign, Conor McGregor, Herb Stoner, Gwenlinn, Rayphlárd and Sildar Hallwinter visited the miner's exchange and met Halia. After the group claimed they had a deed to mine the land under Tresendar Manor, Halia brought them back into her office. She offered the group 100 GP to kill Glasstaff and bring her back any written correspondence in his room. She also gave them a tip to look out for secret doors in The Redbrand Hideout. On Day 5, after defeating The Redbrand Ruffians in the hideout, the group returned to see Halia. They gave her the Letter from The Black Spider to Iarno Albrek, but they admitted that Iarno Albrek (AKA "Glasstaff) escaped. Halia gave them 50 GP, then said she would give them the next 50 GP after they finished the job. On Day 6 - after killing Iarno - Conor, Herb and Rayphlard returned to see Halia again. This time they showed her the glass staff they took from Iarno to prove they killed him. Halia gave them the remaining 50 GP, then she gave them an offer. Since they were no longer with Sildar - who is an agent of The Lords' Alliance - she offered the group an opportunity to work for The Zhentarim. She explained The Zhentarim's plans for taking control of Phandalin now that the Redbrands are no longer in the picture. She gave them 24 hours to give her an answer, but they didn't return within that time frame. Halia made sure they knew not to tell anyone, reminding them that they wouldn't want The Zhentarim as enemies. Later that day, Conor, Herb and Rayphlard found Alex Redbrand, Eliza Redbrand, Grista-Deceased and the other remaining members of the Redbrand Ruffians at Alex Redbrand's House in Phandalin. During that conversation, Conor, Herb and Rayphlard asked Alex about the Zhentarim, and Alex started to put together why Halia acted the way she did.Halia vs. Velleen and Argus
On Day 17, Herb Stoner (in his tiefling form) and Tubby visited the Phandalin Miners' Exchange. Halia asked them questions, saying she doesn't see many tieflings in town and blue dragonborn are pretty rare. Herb says they're just passing through, and he sells several items to Halia. Later that afternoon, Halia approached all of Collateral Damage while they were just north of Phandalin. Halia first addressed Herb, theorizing about his gnome and tiefling forms. She then explained that there were no hard feelings when the group didn't accept her offer to join the Zhentarim. Halia also talked to the group about the Lords' Alliance's growing influence in Phandalin and the new lord Frederich Wulfrun. Halia explained that the Zhentarim informed her that Frederich came from a family that previously ruled Port Llast, and that he's been groomed to be a lord by Dagult Neverember, Lord of Neverwinter. Halia then told them what she had observed about two new threats to the town (and her business), Velleen Firecrow and Argus Skeel. Halia saw Velleen's necklace and recognized it as a symbol of the Cult of Talos, and Halia was concerned that any chaos to the town will impact her business at the miners' exchange. Halia also described Argus as a "shady character," that he's told people that he's a prospector but that he's never been to the miner's exchange. Halia said that she knows evil when she sees it, and Argus is evil and hiding something. She offered to pay the group to give her more information about Velleen and Argus, or ideally to drive them out of town. Halia added that this was all a request from her as a business owner, not as a representative from the Zhentarim. She explained that she's monitoring the situation for the Zhentarim, but as an organization they are choosing to not yet act against either Velleen or Argus.Mental characteristics
Personal history
Halia worked her way up to being viewed as an unofficial authority figure in Phandalin due to her role at Phandalin Miner's Exchange. The citizens of Phandalin didn't respect former townmaster Harbin Wester due to his relationship with The Redbrand Ruffians, and Halia was able to step in and gain the trust of the town, especially the miners. She built a reputation of being one of the few people in town that weren't afraid of the Redbrands.
