Redbrand Ruffians
The Redbrand Ruffians are a group of mercenaries previously located in Phandalin. They were founded by Alex Redbrand, and Alex's younger siblings Eliza Redbrand and Seth Redbrand-Deceased were also core members.
When the campaign started, the Redbrands operated mainly out of the Redbrand Hideout, the hidden underground level of Tresendar Manor. They followed the orders of a wizard named Glasstaff. Many of the members lived in the hideout, but Alex and Eliza lived in a nearby house. A small group of Redbrands led by Seth was also known to be regulars at a tavern called the Sleeping Giant.
On Day 4 of the campaign (17 Tarsakh), Conor McGregor, Herb Stoner, Gwenlinn, Rayphlárd and Lords' Alliance agent Sildar Hallwinter arrived at the Sleeping Giant. They quickly got into a fight with Seth and his friends. The party killed Seth and his group, and the bartender Grista escaped.
On Day 5 (18 Tarsakh), the party continued to pursue the Redbrands, this time at their hideout under Tresendar Manor. They defeated many of the Redbrands in the hideout, but Glasstaff escaped. Eliza witnessed the party attacking some members, and she tried taking them on herself, but she was driven back and Alex pulled her to safety. The party learned much about the Redbrands on that day due to interrogating one and finding the Letter from The Black Spider in Glasstaff's quarters. The letter confirmed the fact that Glasstaff was actually Iarno Albrek, a member of the Lords' Alliance whom Sildar was trying to find. That day they also learned the truth about Harbin Wester and his relationship with the Redbrands. Sildar arrested Harbin and escorted him back to Neverwinter to stand trial.
On Day 6 (19 Tarsakh), as the party was leaving Phandalin, they were ambushed by Glasstaff. After a quick but brutal fight, the party killed Glasstaff and Herb took his staff. Later that day, the party saw Alex carrying items from the Sleeping Giant to his house across the street (Alex Redbrand's House). The party confronted Alex in the house, and he was also with Eliza Redbrand, Grista and the other remaining Redbrands. After learning that Glasstaff was now dead, Alex was ready to give up and told the party they could take whatever they want. He also explained a little about their history with Harbin and the orcs of the Many Arrows Tribe. The party also asked Alex about the Zhentarim, and Alex started to put together why Halia Thornton acted the way she did.
On Day 8, while at Wyvern Tor and preparing an ambush on the orcs from the Many Arrows Tribe, the party saw Gog, a half-ogre with the tribe, walk back carrying the head of Grista.
History
The Redbrands were organized by Alex Redbrand in Phandalin in 1490. Alex made an agreement with Harbin Wester; if Harbin found a way to be elected townmaster of Phandalin, Alex would hire a group of mercenaries to serve as the town's defense forces (primarily to protect the town from The Many Arrows Tribe of orcs). The agreement benefited Harbin because he would have protection, and it benefited Alex because he would get to do whatever he wanted in town without any consequences.
In 1492, a wizard named Glasstaff took over as the leader of the Redbrands. Glasstaff was actually former Lords' Alliance agent Iarno Albrek, but the Redbrands only knew him by his pseudonym. Glasstaff was sent by someone known as the Black Spider, and he took over the Redbrands by force with the help of several bugbears who also worked for the Black Spider. Glasstaff ordered the Redbrands to scare away adventurers and intimidate the Phandalin locals; they previously left the townsfolk alone for the most part. Glasstaff stitched red Rs into each of the members' black cloaks, and he had a Listening Helmet he used to monitor each of them. During the time under Glasstaff's leadership, the Redbrands were known to have murdered at least one Phandalin citizen (Thel Dendrar) and terrorized many more.
