Mere of Dead Men
Geography
History
The region now known as the "Mere of Dead Men" was previously a part of the Uth Kingdom. While facing the threat of destruction from invading orcs, the Uth Kingdom called on its former royal mage Iniarv for assistance. Iniarv, enraged by the request, revealed himself to be a lich. He called on the Sea of Swords to flood the entire plain, killing the invading orcs and also destroying the kingdom. The flood waters receded, revealing swampland and the new hordes of wandering undead creatures that would give the area its new name. Since that time, countless adventurers drawn by tales of ruined castles from the Uth Kingdom have perished in the mere.
After the Uth Kingdom was destroyed, the black dragon Chardansearavitriol claimed the Uthtower as his new lair. He ruled the Mere of Dead Men for centuries, eventually gaining the service of a faction of the Cult of the Dragon. Chardansearavitriol became fascinated by undead over his centuries ruling over the mere. He developed plans with his followers to become a dracolich, and he started calling himself "Ebondeath."
During the ritual in which Chardansearavitriol's followers planned to turn him into a dracolich, a wizard named Bowgentle interrupted. Bowgentle was from the spy network known as the Harpers, and he trapped Chardansearavitriol’s soul in his spellbook before the ritual could be completed. Bowgentle escaped, and Chardansearavitriol’s followers never found him.
