History of Chronan

The Primal Age

The era before written history. Historians and archeologists consider it to be an era when great beasts, elemental spirits and ancestral dragons ruled the world, and most of the sentient species were nomadic hunter-gatherers. The first cultures rose as people learned how to harness magic, but only few ruins remain from those times.

    The Elven Diaspora
    Population Migration / Travel

The eladrin, ancestral elves in Chronan, lived in the Grandwood, but in time many of them spread to other parts of the continent and beyond, forming the different nations of elves: the high elves of Iovillon, the subterranean dark elves, the sea elves of Nyiss Velathyyr and the wood elves of the wilderness.   Some elves sailed across Mare Mediator to the eastern continent, where they founded the forest nation of Alvanystria. In time, however, it was taken over by dragons. Only few survivors ever made it back to Chronan.

The Gilded Age

The era that started about 12.000 years ago, also known as the Warring Age. As high cultures of the sentient species rose in different corners of the world, so began the age of conquests and conflicts. Massive dragons known as greatwyrms rose to power, enslaving entire nations under their rule. Only the giants had the power to oppose them, establishing their own mighty reign. But elsewhere, civilizations bloomed as new inventions were discovered and miraculous feats performed. It all came to an end when a falling star appeared to the sky.

    Founding of Aerdale
    Founding

The first dwarves emerged from their underground lairs under The Skyward Peaks. They knew the art of mining and exchanged gems and precious metals with the Giants ruling the region at that time. The giants taught them their runic magic in exchange, and allowed the dwarves to build a stronghold in what later became known as Aerdale, "The Valley of Air". The citadel has stood time ever since, and remained independent from both the Eight States of Chronan and the nations of Netherspan.

War Between the Giants and the Fey
    Military: War

The Giants of Teutanos descended from The Skyward Peaks into the Grandwood, destroying the Mother Tree of the fey folk and building their own ziggurat in its place. This war over the dominion of the forest would last for millennia. After the last known giants perished in the Fellstar Cataclysm, the ziggurat was overtaken by goliaths and dwarves, and formed into the city of Reignstone.

    The Fallstar Cataclysm
    Disaster / Destruction

A meteor called The Fellstar struck the world some 2500 years ago, ending the Gilded Age and launching the world into the Ashen Age. The cataclysm wiped out most ancient cultures, the Greatwyrms and the Giants, and covered the world in ash and dust for centuries.   The continent of Chronan, on the opposite side of the world from the crashsite - now known as The Wound of the World - was least impacted, and new civilizations began to rise there first.

The Ashen Age

The centuries after The Fellstar Cataclysm were spent in the dark and cold as ash covered the skies. Only smaller dragons on their floating islands and the nations under the ground and the sea survived, as well as those who were protected by magic, but none were unaffected. The remaining people turned to magic-users to guard and guide them through the devastation, and in time, great Magocracies were established, where mages ruled supreme. As sunlight finally returned, first to the continent of Chronan, people began to believe that gods had returned to them. Newly discovered steam-based technology made everyone's lives easy even without magic, and the haughty and cruel reign of mages waned.

Gnomish Kingdom of Maeg Nach was founded
    Founding

The gnomish culture rose in modern-day Magnapolis region, until the chieftain of the forest gnomes clan, Maeghaldyn Nach, founded the kingdom of Maeg Nach. During the thousand years the kingdom lasted, it was reigned by nine different rulers. Due to the magical capabilities of the Nach Dynasty, it is counted among the magocracies of the time. The Founder Queen was succeeded by her greatgrandson Yooru, who was just a child by the time Maeghaldyn died. He ruled only some years until he was murdered by his jealous uncle, Hohoru the Usurper.   After the unpopular tyrant died, his granddaughter Siovan rose to the throne, determined to correct her grandsire's mistakes. She becamed the beloved Queen of the People. After rising to power, her son Curu, renown for his singing voice, founded a famous bardic college that still stands to this day. His voice was recorded into a magic sword called Taliesin, which was buried with him.   Curu's daughter Mirvan had an adventurous spirit, and though she reigned in name, she spent most of her time exploring Chronan and beyond. The nation's daily business was left to her little brother Lorridan, who became known as the Substitute King.   During the reign of Morrighan, Mirvan's granddaughter, a horrid plague spread throughout Maeg Nach, killing half of its population. Morrighan's son Trustan was weakened by the plague that eventually killed his parents as well, and the gnomish nation was creaking under the poor government and the arrival of other species within its borders - including freed human slaves from Jubileum. Trustan's daughter, Princess Trussalotte, was a prophet of Kreusstross, one of the three gnomish gods, and brought with her the Steaming Age to Maeg Nach. She surrendered the rule of the lands to The Order, and the kingdom became the state of Magnapolis.

    Liberation of Le Hume
    Political event

By the end of the Ashen Age, the ancient elvish kingdom of Iovillon was struck by a long series of uprisings that shook its foundations. The stout halflings of Falucia claimed independence from the kingdom, and the people of its neighbouring countries resented the use of human slaves still practiced by the high elves, even though slave trade had ceased since The Fellstar catastrophe. The elven lords claimed that they were merely protecting the inferior species from the wicked post-cataclysmic world, but eventually a full-blown revolt ignited in the district of Le Hume within the Iovillan capital, where most of the human slaves resided.   After many elves lost their lives in the hands of the angry mob, the last High King Chalfant Seul Beauchamp decreed that all slaves were to be liberated. His reign ended soon after when Prophet Thalastir brought the faith of the Gods of Time and Order to the kingdom, and its name was changed to Jubileum.

    Czenovan Uprising
    Revolution

Three years before the Ashen Age was announced to be concluded, a prophet of Aegias-Meteo, a lowly half-orc named Zuut, took the followers he had gathered - a throng of common folk tired of the oppression of the wealthy and powerful mages - and marched to the palace of the last Wizard-King of Czenova, Vladislaf VII fon Makarof. Announcing his deity's will, Zuut was able to strip the king of his magical powers and dethrone him. The cruel king and his court were subsequently executed by the enraged crowd, but Zuut quickly restored order to the city. With his sage advice, a great rebuilding effort was undertaken and the ancient city of the wizard-kings was buried under the modern high-rise buildings and paved streets built on top of it.

The Steaming Age

As the people of Chronan turned to the faith of the Gods of Time and Order, the Chronanese Calendar was established and a new age begun. The starting date was set to be the day The Eight Prophets met and agreed that their gods were the true and legitimate ones. This led to centuries of fast technological advancement, but also devastating battles between the followers of Order and those that opposed them. The Eight States managed to restore peace and order with an iron hand, but still face resistance.

As the War Between Order and Chaos spread and the devastating power of chaos artifacts used by the opposing side became apparent, The Order needed to increase their manpower. The Czenovan Metropolite of the time, Deliverance Prometeo, then founded a highly classified scientific center in her city that started to develop soldiers that combined biological and mechanical elements - The Warforged. The Metropolite eventually became one herself, and the organization was named after her as the Prometech Institute.

    The Great Battle of Czenova
    Military: Battle

After the War Between Order and Chaos had raged for over fifty years, the so-called forces of Chaos gathered all their power to besiege the mighty city of Czenova. After enduring the siege over a full winter, the war machines, The Warforged and the Replicatons built by the Czenovans almost managed to drive away the enemy forces, but as a last resort they detonated bombs filled with chaotic energy that devastated the surroundings of the city, turning them into the corrupted and twisted lands of Waste. The city was spared thanks to its magic defenses and the war was declared won, even though the rest of the state of Czenova never recovered.

    The Gem War
    Military: War

Having recovered from the War Between Order and Chaos relatively quickly, the people of Reignstone looked to expand their territory to the north. With the use of Airships and steam warboats, the Reignstonian army travelled up the Emerald Flow to attack the ancient dwarven citadel of Aerdale, known for its rich gemstone mines. The will to conquer those mines gave this event its name, "The Gem War".   The citadel's defenses relying on runic magic proved too strong, however, and after several attempts, the defeated Reignstonians had to retreat. Aerdale remained independent, and an uneasy truce was declared between the two settlements.   A little over a century later, after an unsolvable dispute between the Cornerstone Clans of Reignstone over the next Metropolite, Griamel of Aerdale was risen to the rank, as the first ruler hailing outside the city. This relaxed the tension between Aerdale and Reignstone, and opened new trade possibilities between them, including the share of Aerdale's runic magic.

    Orcish Truce
    Diplomatic action

On the 33th of Ironmoon in the year 359 SA during an exceedingly gruesome winter, the orcs that had rebelled against the rule of The Order for centuries in the southern parts of Geigerport finally called for a truce. The guerrilla war and the lack of resources had greatly diminished the orcs' numbers, and the cold blizzards had lowered the morale as they thought their fiery Phoenix Goddess had abandoned them. In order to preserve the remainder of his people, High Shaman Zaroum Karsht surrendered to the Geigerportian government.   As part of the peace agreement, the sacred temple of the orcs on Barambu Island was converted into a cathedral of Aegias-Meteo. The great-granddaughter of the High Shaman eventually became the first half-orc Metropolite in the Eight States since Saint Zuut.

    Financial Event

Two ambitious gnome artificers, Gillavant Loosescrew and Huldalourd Whirlycog, founded the Gadgetory north of Magnapolis, launching a mass production of automatons and clockwork items.
In the year 269, there was an explosion in the Gadgetory that destroyed much of the facility and killed the sons of both founders, who were already planning to retire. After the accident, the factory was rebuilt and started to produce autognomes at an increased speed. Eventually, automated workers started to replace living ones. At the same time, the environment around Gadgetory started to wither and die.
