The Order

Symbol: eight-pointed golden star   The organizatorial structure of the faith of the Gods of Time and Order in the continent of Chronan is commonly known as The Order. It governs everything in the theocratic Eight States that form the majority of the continent.

Organization

The leader of The Order in each state is called a Metropolite. The eight Metropolites are religious, militaristic and governmental figureheads of their respective state. They are said to be successors of the Eight Prophets that united the nations of Chronan and founded the theocracy about 500 years ago.   Below the Metropolites is a host of subordinates:
  • High Clergy of each god in each state, 64 in total
  • The Council in each state, formed by heads of the clergy, the guilds and the wealthiest families
  • Steam Knights, elite warriors that act as personal guards and protectors of the law, with the Grand Master as their leader
  • The Inquisitors tasked in tracking down chaos artifacts, heretics and dissenters, with eight High Inquisitors as their leaders
  • Seven Air Brigades, each lead by an Air Marshal and containing numerous officers and thousands of brigadiers guarding the airspace on their Airships and other flying vessels
  • Origo Fleet, the navy guarding the coast and sea routes in the west
  • The Prometech Institute, where scientists perform secretive research in the name of progress
  • The Watchers of Extraplanar Activity (W.E.P.A.), a small sect of Philomelo researching otherwordly influence
  • The Polis Watch keeping peace in each state capital, lead by a Commissary
  • Diplomat Priests and Journalist Monks (working for the Daily Orderly newspaper) of Politia Palladion
  • Doctor Priests and Nurse Monks of Tritiana Mater
  • Funeral Priests and Mortician Monks of Elethrain
  • Judge Priests and Lawyer Monks of Zaumaturge
  • Teacher Priests and Scribe Monks of Philomelo
  • Smith Priests and Artisan Monks of Kreusstross
  • Thespian Priests and Choir Monks of Manadis
  • Auditor Priests and Iron Fist Monks of Aegias-Meteo
  •

    Principles

The Order operates under a strict set of laws. Some of the principles have been the cause of rebellion and even war in the past. These principles include:
  • You must not worship other gods than the eight Gods of Time and Order. Other gods are false and chaotic.
  • The steam technology is a gift from the gods. Spread it to all the lands so they can prosper.
  • You must shun chaos, for it is antithetic to order. Chaos does not respect the natural order of all things, so you must not respect it either.
  •   From the perspective of The Order, only eight sentient species - humans, dragonborn, dwarves, elves, gnomes, goliaths, halflings and kobolds - are naturally formed and thus pure. These are referred to as the "Eight People of Order". Individuals born due to otherwordly influence, such as aasimar, genasi and tieflings, are thought to belong to the natural order as well, as are constructed entities like automatons, golems and the Warforged. Most of the other species, like orcs, goblins, fey folk and the half-beasts, are considered mutants, descendants of people influenced by chaotic energy. In the past, these people were persecuted, excecuted and even enslaved, and even today they are not fully accepted as members of the society.

    Crimes

Crimes in the eyes of the law of The Order include:
  • Arson
  • Blackmail of officials
  • Bribery of officials
  • Destruction of public property
  • Forgery of official documents and other forms of fraud
  • Murder of lawful people
  • Obstruction of officials
  • Smuggling untaxed goods
  • Piracy, robbery and thievery
  • Rape out of wedlock
  • Tax evasion
  • Treason
  • Unlicensed driving of steam vehicles or piloting air vessels
  • Vandalism
  • Worshipping chaotic gods, demons, devils and other ungodly entities
  •   The punishment for these crimes ranges from fines to imprisonment to death penalty. A common alternative to prison is to send the convict to work at the glimspar mines up in The Glimmering Archiourano, floating islands ruled by Dragon Lords allied with The Order.   Judge Priests of Zaumaturge are usually called to pass judgment, but other officials such as the Inquisitors have the ability to carry out sentences as well. Prosecutors are of religious background, but other lawyers are allowed to operate outside of priesthood. Drug use, gambling and prostitution are not illegal per se, but are deemed highly immoral activities among religious people.
