These magical islands float on the skies to the northeast of the continent of
Chronan, thanks to the heavy density of a mineral known as "
glimspar". These islands, also called "skylands", have been claimed by
the Dragon Lords ever since they mystically appeared after
the Fellstar Cataclysm that ended the Gilded Age. They are also home to legions of dragonborn and kobolds, as well as other flying creatures such as the aarakocra and the genasi.
Due to an ancient feud, the Dragon Lords include only metallic and gem dragons, and chromatic dragons are forbidden to even approach the skylands. Those that attempt are killed or chased away collaboratively by all nearby Dragon Lords. This ban also includes dragonborn with chromatic scales, although some are kept as prisoners in the glimspar mines.
The vegetation in the Archiourano is mostly purple and pink, and the clouds swirling around them have a glistening quality, all thanks to the effects of glimspar. There are several glimspar mines located in the islands, but they have recently been subjected to raids by
Sky Pirates as the price of the mineral has gone up.
Some centuries ago, one of the smaller skylands lost so much of its glimspar density that it crashed down to the ground in the
Copperhaven region. Artificers and engineers then used the remaining glimspar deposits to develop the first
airships.
Largest of the skylands include
Pamilang and
Shubrabi, although the largest glimspar mine is found on
Kamikara Skyland. There's been writings that during the Ashen Age, one of the skylands,
Vindra Vu, which was ruled by the dragon wizard
Khrishalaë, vanished into the
Astral Sea. Khrishalaë was said to have done so to protect his people from a challenger.
