  • Jubileum is both the name of one of the Eight States of Chronan and its capital city. It is located at the center of the continent, and contains the great Lake Jubilation. The state lies in the plains between the Brasswall Range, the Grandwood and the Hourglass Desert. Compared to its surroundings, Jubileum has a surprisingly pleasant and temperate climate.   The capital city and the sister cities of Joieux, Celebriant and Reveriel on the lakeside contain the majority of high elven population in the states. The four settlements have stood in place since the Gilded Age as part of the elven kingdom of Iovillon, although they went through major reconstruction after The Fellstar cataclysm. The ancient architecture of tall spires and domes in the cities is nowadays enhanced with colorful neon lights and signage.   On an island in the middle of Lake Jubilation is the amusement park of Carnavalon, rumored to be run by fey folk. It has been a popular vacation destination since times immemorial, but modern steam technology has spread to the fairgrounds as well. At the southern shore rises Absalom Tradepost, where merchants from both Jubileum and Gardenoor gather to trade wares - and secrets.   To the north of the capital lie the vast Falucian Plains with fertile farmlands, wine orchards and stout halfling abodes such as Rivend, Merlont and Lyr. The serene River Luce crosses the plains, passing a dense forest where the state collects its timber - for it is forbidden and even dangerous to cut down trees from the Grandwood. A successful halfling woman called Turmeric Prowler owns the largest lumberyard of the state. There are also several mining businesses along the Brasswall Range, including the lucrative Lyrian Goldmines and the so-called Forsaken Mines that are said to be overtaken by feral gnolls.   In the northern parts of the Falucian Plains there's a deep fissure in the earth, known as the Sunless Chasm, said to extend all the way down to Netherspan. On the very northern edge is a pass to the state of Copperhaven, guarded by the impregnable Fort Montpassant. The proud family of halflings governing the fortress have refused to wov fealty to either state, but collect tolls from all those wishing to cross the mountain pass.   The foothills to the southwest are known as the Mystic Moors, covered by a persistent fog said to originate from cursed burial mounds of the victims of the War Between Order and Chaos. Beyond the moors lies Jovanna's Pass that leads to the Waste of Czenova, and the Fungal Forest Pass that leads to Parcivale. To the south the hills descent towards a cliff know as the Devil's Drop, beyond which spread the endless sands of the Hourglass Desert.

    History

The central valley of Chronan was first settled by the elves that moved out of the Grandwood during the Elven Diaspora during the prehistoric Primal Age. Their kingdom has existed since those times, and the citizens started calling themselves High Elves, in comparison to the other, less civilized tribes that scattered around the continent. The kingdom became known as Iovillon, and its four beautiful lakeside cities were built with the help of magic and slaves.   The High Elves of Iovillon used to enslave all other species they deemed inferior, but during the Gilded Age there were was a bitter war between the kingdom and the dwarf from the mountains, at the end of which an agreement was made that no dwarf was to be enslaved any longer. A similar pact was made with the halflings and gnomes living on the farmlands surrounding the elven cities, on the condition that they kept paying tithes to the kingdom. That left only the humans who were considered too brutish and simplistic to be released.   The rulers of Iovillon were known as High Kings, and in time they achieved god-like status. It was believed that the deceased kings and queens ascended to the elven heaven of Arvandor, where they took their place in the pantheon, but even in their lives their rule was absolute. The High Kings were protected by the noble Green Knights, remnants of which still linger in the city of Jubileum, holding on to ancient customs and traditions.   The fall of The Fellstar and the following Ashen Age brought even the mighty Iovillon down to its knees, and after an arduous rebuilding process, the stout halfling communities of Falucia claimed independence from the greatly weakened kingdom. Finally, mere decades before the kingdom would crumble and join the newly established Eight States, the remaining human slaves revolted and the last High King Chalfant Seul Belchamp signed a law that ended slavery.   Thalastir, a self-proclaimed prophet of the wise god Philomelo, rallied the people under his faith, telling them to forsake the god-kings of old and rejoice the new age of technology and progress that the Gods of Time and Order brought them. Iovillon's name was then reformed into Jubileum, and it became one of the wealthiest states governed by The Order.   During the Great War Between Chaos and Order, Jubileum was mostly protected from the raging battles by the tall mountains, deep forest and vast desert on its borders, but it did see attacks from those people that still yearned for the glory days of the old kingdom. In the final stage of the war, two female pilots rose out of the ranks of Jubileum's Air Brigade: Jovanna Muscadet and Zelbess Udrum'mut - the former gaining fame as a lauded warhero and the latter getting infamy as the first sky pirate.   Many landmarks of the old kingdom of Iovillon can still be seen in the four cities of Jubileum. The ancestral palace of the High Kings now serves as the house of the Metropolite, and their bodies are still kept in the grandiose mausoleum in the center of the capital. Even though the common chronanese language has spread to Jubileum as well, many older elves still speak the debonair iovillan dialect of elvish.
