Brimstone Island

Brimstone Island is a large volcanic island located to the southeast of the continent of Chronan, between Mare Crystallum and Mare Mediator. It is neighboured by the smaller, nearly uninhabited Pyrite Island to the west and Pumice Island to the east. The population of Brimstone Island has a large concentration of dwarves, dragonborn and fire genasi. For an unknown reason, tieflings and aasimar are also born frequently among the denizens.   The largest settlement on the island is Heathaven, a magical metropolis that has thrived despite being located on an active volcano, Mount Azix. It was founded almost a 1000 years ago by an efreet sorceress called Calymax and her followers when the island became inhabitable again.   The people of Brimstone Island worship Azhaer, the fertility goddess of ash and rebirth, as well follow as Ixhor, the god of fire and death, and sacrifice people to appease them. The two volcanic deities are said to once have been the one and the same, but became divided when the meteor struck the world. Evidence has been found that the myths are connected to a two-headed red Greatwyrm Xizathot that inhabited the island during the Gilded Age.   There is also a smaller harbor town of Hellport on the southern coast of the island, and a beach resort at the northwestern side at the Garnet Lagoon. Ruins of the ancient culture of Tephra, worshippers of Xizathot, are scattered around the island.   The leader of Brimstone Island has traditionally been called "the Sovereign". The current Sovereign is Lexa Shymone Daymond, a teenage girl who inherited the position as a child when the rest of her family were slaughtered in an uprising. The Sovereign holds only symbolic power, as the decisions are made by the triad formed by the prime minister and the two high priests of Azhaer and Ixhor. The safety of the Sovereign and the whole island is in the hands of the Salamandrites, mage-soldiers harnessing the element of fire.   The relations between Brimstone Island and the Eight States of Chronan were long strained due to religious differences, but in recent years the nations have made diplomatic progress. The islanders have traded their precious vulcanium ore in exchange for the steam-based technology of the Chronanese. Vulcanium is easy to work with due to its relatively low melting point but it is harder than steel when cooled. Due to its heat-reactive nature, it is used in magically enhanced weapons. Vulcanium has thus far only been found from Mount Azix.
