Castleport
Castleport is a large port town located on the north side of Knightstone Bay in the Truris Kingdom. It is the capitol for the province by the same name and includes a number of other, smaller towns and villages located along the coast. Trade is the lifeblood of the town and is facilitated by its port.
Government
Castleport is the seat of government for the county of Castleport, which includes the towns of Beachdenn, Fesca, Oceangate, and Baylight. The county is run by Viscount Montgomery Silverbane.
Defences
Castleport is home to Hardingham Keep and a full garrison of soldiers. This includes not just basic infantry, but archers, cavalry, and the occasional battlemage as well.
It is the role of the local infantry to provide policing duties in addition to their military role. Regular patrols of two or three soldiers can often be found in the lower commons area of the town.
The city is surrounded by a nine-foot tall stone wall that is manned - to one degree or another - at all times. The wall itself has five gates: one headed west; one to the east; two headed north on either side of Atibel Run; and one sea gate that opens into Knightstone Bay to allow for shipping.
Industry & Trade
Castleport is known for its ship building industry and its somewhat busy port. While not as bustling as some of the larger cities, such as Arrowport or Embermire, the port in this seaside city sees its fair share of goods flowing through. So much so, in fact, that nearly the entire lifeblood of the city's economy flows through here.
Several lumbermills are located nearby the shipyards to support that industry, and blacksmiths aren't far from the mills.
A small leather and tanning business, mainly for local consumption, flourishes here.
Assets
Taverns and Inns
Being a seaside trading town, Castleport sees more than its fair share of visitors. To accomodate their needs, as well as the needs of the locals, multiple taverns and inns have cropped up over the years. The quality of these ranges wildly from small and seedy to large and bustling. Here are a few of them:The Aggressive Goblin
Despite its name, the Aggressive Goblin, run by the halfling Baldo Galbolg, maintains a good reputation for cleanliness and welcoming nature. There is often a bard or some musical act playing on its small stage, and it never gets too rowdy here. The availability of rooms helps to attract to out of town visitors and its proximity to the Fighter's Guild guild across the street adds to the overall security of the establishment.Fox & Cur
Fox & Cur, as owned by Derick Clemensen, is a small bar near the warehouse district. it serves mainly sailors and traveling merchants, but also hosts plenty of locals. One can typically find various members of seedy organizations such as the South Wind Trading Company congregating here. The Itchy Orc
Tucked away in the Southgate neighborhood of Castleport along the Southport Road is the small, foul smelling establishment known as the Itchy Orc. Its owner, the orc Brimlok the Girthy, is as friendly as he is terrifying to look at.Community Services
A city the size of Castleport requires the presence of educational institutions and community outreach. In this case, a number of small schools and other government and community-run services exist.Castleport Library
The Castleport Library is home to the county's collection of literature, histories, biographies, and magical tomes. It also plays a role in the education of many of the poorer locals or those seeking to gain greater understanding of the world.Magic and Alchemy
A trading town like Castleport also attracts its share of magic users, both great and meek. These individuals often require the use of spell components or materials to be consumed in the use of their craft. A number of shops have cropped up across town to support these needs. The Plane Walker Magic Shop
Run by the eccentric and aloof Qi'faren Elesh, the Plane Walker Magic Shop serves primarily as an alchemical hub in the city. Driven by his love of transmutation and an unknown source of income, Qi'faren seeks to obtain ever more obscure knowlege and means of transforming objects, indeed to control the very fabric of reality itself. The Sleeping Seal Magic items
Edgwyn Evenstand runs this small stand located in East Castleport near the library. She sells mainly spell components, such as ash, or various odds and ends, but will also sometimes have spell scrolls or magic items.Guilds and Factions
Trade
The Merchant's Guild used to hold sway in Castleport, given its lucrative ports and access to trade routes. However, in early 1427, the South Wind Trading Company unscrupulously ousted the aging Merchant's Guild, forcing them to give up their lucrative contracts to the upstart organization. Since then, the SWTC has expanded its role to include "protection" of merchants both in the area as well as those transiting through its ports. The SWTC runs a tight operation, by all accounts; so much so that many of the local merchants and tradesmen complain about their harsh tactics and the brutality of the men hired to protect them. The question remains, however: protect them from what or who?Magic and Wizardry
The Castleport chapter of the Mage's Guild occupies a two story building on the northeast side of the town near Atibel Run. One can often smell the... more aromatic... signs of magical experimentation going on in there. The guild, while not a school, does offer limited magical educational resources such as best practices and lessons learned. They're not an overly welcoming bunch, as the mimic door guard they have in place is often finnicky and refuses to let some in at its own discretion. At the same time, though, if one has been let in, they take great care to make them welcome and will help in any way that they reasonably can.Combat and Fighting
"Strength is not just in the swing of the sword, but in the heart that wields it." - AnonymousOn the other side of Atibel Run is the local chapter of Fighter's Guild. This particular chapter is run by the legendary Seraphina Stormblade who champions egalitarianism and justice. The guild offers training for those interested in learning the way of the sword (or axe, warhammer, bow, etc). It's doors are generally open for those seeking help and looking to hire the guild's services.
Geography
Castleport is situated on the northern coast of Knightstone Bay. Like all towns on the southern coast of Oduth, it is subject to seasonal winter storms. The terrain begins to steadily increase as one heads north.
