Ports' Gambit Session 12

General Summary

Weekend at Penguin's

The party rested for the night back in their rooms at The Sterling Beaver inn. Torque transported the body of Penguin to his room after they successfully convinced the barkeep, Clifton Herbert, that Penguin was just sick. The deceased adventurer was transported to his room, and the rest of the group got some rest.   The following morning, around 9:30, the group gathered on the ground floor of the tavern and pondered what they would do with their friend's body. They discussed burying him, taking him to the morgue, cremating the body, and other options. As they were talking out their options, the door swung open, letting the sunlight in. Alyce Dorgonn entered accompanied by a short, chainmail-clad dwarf. She introduced him as Leroy Jenkins, one of the members of the guards in town that would accompanying the party given their recent run-in with the South Wind Trading Company   Alyce immediately noticed Penguin's state, but the party - particularly Xolos - attempted to pass it off as him just being sick. The others failed to keep up the charade and eventually admitted to his death, but never expanded what had happened. Torque described wanting to cremate him, since he described it as part of his culture's practice. Alyce conceded that she had recently undergone sensitivity training and agreed to respect the customs.   They all stepped outside and Torque blew his breath weapon at the corpse, igniting him. The group said their farewells and watched as the body burned for the next hour or so. Afterwards, they collected some of his ashes to keep with them as a memory.

Taken

From the makeshift funeral pyre, the party made their way to Matilde Carson's home after Alyce informed them that she had been kidnapped sometime in the night and was requesting their assistance. The party immediately agreed, since some of the members, Xolos in particular, were fond of Matilde.    They arrived on the scene a few minutes later and found the place swarming with officers and onlookers. The group entered and began searching for clues among the wreckage. The small home had clearly been searched, with drawers and cupboards tossed on the floor.    Spruce Springstream was able to deduce that a book of some sort had been taken, but it was impossible to tell what it was. Somehow they drew a link between the book that they had collected for Qi'faren Elesh and the book that was taken from Matilde's residence.    As they continued their search, they found a small South Wind Trading Company insignia on the floor partially buried underneath some broken crockery. They knew that Matilde worked for them, but they also knew that the group was ruthless. The group's investigation further revealed the presence of bloody scratches along the baseboard of the wall near the front door.   Outside, they noticed an elderly dwarven woman looking in on the scene worriedly. They approached and asked her name. "Susan Silversmith" she replied timidly. The group asked if she had seen or heard anything unusual. The woman looked on, and explained that she lives next door. Susan went on to tell how she had been awoken by a loud bang in the middle of the night, followed by Matilde screaming and the voices of several men yelling. She heard one of them ordering the others to find it and take her. She said the worst of it was when the screaming suddenly stopped and all was quiet. She wanted to do something, but as an elderly woman she would've been unable to assist.    The group took note of Susan's account, and decided to rest for a bit. They headed back to The Sterling Beaver to figure out their next move...
