Arrowport
Arrowport, a major port city and the capital of the Duchy of Arrowport within the Truris Kingdom, thrives on the western bank of the River Argent where it meets the Bay of Arrows. Its diverse populace of humans, dwarves, elves, halflings, and others engages in robust trade and craftsmanship, facilitated by a network of rivers and bustling marketplaces like the Grand Bazaar and the specialized guildhalls of dwarven smiths and elven textile workers. While its strategic location and fertile surroundings foster prosperity, the city's vital harbor and much of its trade are under the heavy and often corrupting influence of the nefarious South Wind Trading Company, casting a shadow over this otherwise vibrant hub with a history stretching back centuries to its founding in 769 TAA and its eventual integration into the kingdom in 1058 TAA.

Industry & Trade
Arrowport thrives as a major economic hub within the Truris Kingdom, fueled by its strategic coastal location, access to vital waterways, and the diverse skills of its populace. The city's industry and trade are multifaceted, encompassing resource extraction, skilled craftsmanship, and vibrant mercantile activity.
Key Industries:
- Agriculture: The fertile lands of the Arrowport Delta surrounding the city are a significant source of grain, fruits, vegetables, and livestock. These agricultural products not only sustain the city's large population but also form a crucial part of its outgoing trade.
- Fishing: Situated on the Bay of Arrows and with access to the River Argent, fishing is a vital industry. Fishermen contribute significantly to the city's food supply, and various types of fish and seafood are traded both locally and inland.
- Craftsmanship: Arrowport boasts skilled artisans from its diverse population. The Dwarven Craftsmen's Guildhall is renowned for its high-quality metalwork, including tools, weapons, and architectural elements, as well as intricate stonework. Elven artisans, while their guild is known as the Elven Silk Exchange, produce a wide array of textiles, clothing, and footwear, utilizing both locally sourced and imported materials. Other crafts, such as leatherworking, carpentry, and jewelry making, also flourish within the city.
- Logging: While the immediate vicinity has been largely deforested, the Silverleaf Woods across the Argent provide a significant source of timber. Independent loggers in the northern grove on the peninsula also contribute a smaller amount of specialized wood. This lumber supports construction, shipbuilding, and various crafting industries.
- Shipbuilding: The bustling harbor necessitates a thriving shipbuilding industry. Shipwrights construct and repair a variety of vessels, from fishing boats and river barges to larger merchant ships that ply the waters of the Bay of Arrows and beyond.
Trade and Commerce:
Arrowport's location at the mouth of the River Argent and its access to the Bay of Arrows make it a crucial center for both inland and maritime trade.- Inland Trade: The River Argent and its tributaries (River Thorne, River Nimbol, Stellshaw River) serve as vital arteries for transporting goods to and from the interior of the Duchy of Arrowport and neighboring regions like Blackstone and Stormhaven. Agricultural produce, timber, minerals, and crafted goods flow along these waterways. Settlements like Argentum, Creekbridge, and Oakenshire rely on these river routes for trade with Arrowport.
- Maritime Trade: The harbor is a hive of activity, with ships arriving from and departing for distant lands across the Bay of Arrows and potentially further afield in the Truris Kingdom and beyond. Incoming goods include exotic spices, foreign textiles, precious metals, and manufactured goods not readily available locally. Outgoing trade consists primarily of agricultural products, crafted goods (especially dwarven metalwork and elven textiles), timber, and locally sourced fish.
- Marketplaces: The city boasts several significant marketplaces. The Grand Bazaar is a sprawling hub for a wide variety of goods, attracting merchants and customers from all walks of life. The Dwarven Craftsmen's Guildhall and the Elven Silk Exchange also function as specialized marketplaces for their respective wares.
- The South Wind Trading Company's Influence: The South Wind Trading Company, led by Zelda Bens, exerts near-total control over the flow of goods through Arrowport's harbor. This monopoly grants them significant influence over prices and trade, impacting all other merchants and the overall economy of the city and the wider region. Other merchant guilds and independent traders constantly struggle against the South Wind's dominance, creating a tense and competitive environment.
Infrastructure
The city boasts a robust network of roads, bridges, and canals, facilitating trade and commerce. Merchants and artisans have established thriving marketplaces, including the Grand Bazaar, the Dwarven Craftsmen's Guildhall, and the Elven Silk Exchange. The city's harbor, managed by the Harbormaster's Office, accommodates a bustling fleet of ships, connecting Arrowport to distant lands. Warehouses, granaries, and shipyards line the waterfront, supporting the city's maritime trade.
History
Founding
In the early days of the Aura Age, as exploration and settlement expanded along the southern coast, a shrewd human explorer named Anya Swiftarrow recognized the strategic potential of the Arrowhead Peninsula. The confluence of the River Argent and Iris Creek offered natural defenses and access to both inland waterways and the bounty of the Bay of Arrows. Gathering a small band of pioneers – including dwarves seeking new veins of ore in the nearby outcrops, elves drawn to the serene coastal beauty, and halflings with an eye for fertile farmland – Anya established a fortified trading post around 19 Enehm, 769 TAA. This initial settlement, named for both Anya's keen marksmanship and the peninsula's distinctive shape, quickly grew into a vital hub for trade and resource gathering, laying the foundation for the future city of Arrowport.Early Expansion
The period between Arrowport's founding in 769 TAA and its integration into the Truris Kingdom in 1058 TAA was a dynamic era of growth punctuated by significant challenges. Initially a small but strategically vital trading post, Arrowport steadily expanded its influence along the Arrowhead Peninsula, incorporating nearby settlements and leveraging its river and sea access for burgeoning trade. However, this expansion brought it into direct conflict with orcish warbands spilling out from the Untamed Wastes, leading to frequent skirmishes and the constant need for strong defenses. Furthermore, the power vacuum left by the centuries-past disappearance of the Phasnosh Empire spurred both opportunity and competition as Arrowport vied for control of resources and territory with other emerging settlements and migrating populations seeking to repopulate the region. The extensive network of waterways branching from the River Argent served as the lifeblood for the early expansion and settlement of the region. The Argent itself provided a direct route inland from the vital port of Arrowport, allowing explorers, traders, and settlers to easily penetrate the interior. Following the tributary rivers, such as the River Thorne, River Nimbol, and the Stellshaw River, further facilitated this spread.Competition and Conflict with Neighbors
The early decades following Arrowport's founding were not without friction, as its burgeoning prosperity and expansionist tendencies inevitably led to disagreements and occasional conflicts with other emerging city-states vying for regional dominance. Among these, the most notable rival was Calanthium, situated 98 miles to the east at the mouth of the River Calanthor. The relationship between Arrowport and Calanthium was characterized by periods of tense coexistence, punctuated by outbreaks of localized conflict. Each city sought to undermine the other's influence through strategic alliances with smaller powers, economic maneuvering, and, when necessary, displays of military strength. It was this constant state of low-level conflict and the growing awareness of external threats, such as the persistent orcish incursions, that eventually led to the realization that cooperation, rather than continued rivalry, was in their mutual best interest, especially in the face of a significant military setback like the Massacre at Bloody Ridge.Integration into the Truris Kingdom
The integration of Arrowport into the Truris Kingdom, formalized by the Treaty of Oakenshire in 1058 TAA, was a pragmatic decision born from a confluence of factors. Arrowport, despite its regional power and prosperity, recognized the growing strength and stability offered by the burgeoning Truris Kingdom. The devastating losses suffered at the Massacre of Bloody Ridge earlier that year starkly highlighted Arrowport's vulnerability to external threats, particularly the persistent orcish incursions from the Untamed Wastes. Seeking security and a broader military umbrella, Arrowport's leadership, likely after much deliberation and perhaps internal debate, opted for a negotiated union rather than risking further isolation and potential subjugation by stronger neighbors or overwhelming threats.Geography
Arrowport is strategically situated within the fertile Arrowport Delta, occupying the western bank of the significant River Argent. This location provides natural advantages, with numerous smaller rivers branching off the Argent and emptying into the Bay of Arrows, creating a network of waterways throughout the delta region.
The city itself primarily lies on the Arrowhead Peninsula, a landmass defined by the River Argent to the east and the Iris Creek, one of the Argent's distributaries, to the west. At its widest point, the peninsula spans approximately five miles. Arrowport is located on the western bank of the Argent within this peninsula and extends roughly two miles at its widest point.
The landscape immediately surrounding Arrowport has been largely transformed from its original wooded state into extensive farmlands, reflecting the city's reliance on agriculture. A smaller wooded grove persists approximately three miles north of the city, also situated on the Arrowhead Peninsula, and supports a small number of independent logging operations. However, the primary source of timber for Arrowport is the larger Silverleaf Woods, located on the eastern side of the River Argent.
The terrain in the immediate vicinity of Arrowport is characterized by flat grasslands and cultivated fields, highlighting the arable nature of the delta region. The rivers and creeks provide natural boundaries and likely contribute to the area's fertility.
