Sanguine Abyss

The Sanguine Abyss is a network of caves in the southern Truris Kingdom from which the Berkwood Beck flows from. It is roughly 9km northwest, as the crow flies, from Castleport.

Geography

The caves are part of the Amboro Hills, and they lie roughly half way down Mons Lanson near the edge of the Hurlement Caldera. It is an expansive network of largely uncharted caves comprised of slate and granite. The Berkwood Beck originates from deep within the caves and, to date, nobody has fully mapped out its exact origin. It is surmised that it stems from an aquifer deep within the network.

Localized Phenomena

"Within the depths of the Sanguine Abyss, nature dances with an ethereal touch, as the ground trembles softly and celestial lights whisper secrets of the unknown." - Unknown Traveler
When one gets close enough, they can often feel the ground rumbling gently beneath their feet. Sometimes at night, nearby travelers can see strange lights coming from the area of the caves. However, whenever any of these sightings have been investigated more closely, no indications of their origins have been found. Some suggest strange magics at play, others suggest these may just be minor earthquakes underfoot with pockets of natural gas illuminating the sky. Still, others suggest that it is the stirrings of a long sleeping dragon buried under the rock.   The theories involving magic and the presence of a dragon beneath the rock add an air of mysticism to the situation. While these ideas are purely speculative, they contribute to the folklore and wonder surrounding the Sanguine Abyss. The belief in magical forces at play or the awakening of a long-dormant creature captures the imagination and adds to the allure of the area.

Fauna & Flora

Typical cave-dwelling creatures are found within the confines of the network, including bats, rats, and newts. Some explorers have even reported seeing the occasional kobold lurking near the caves, but those are typically dismissed as the rantings of drunken locals.

History

Rumors of strange rumblings and grinding sounds emanating from the cave often circulate among locals that venture near the caves. These, coupled with the colorful dance of lights periodically seen from downstream lead many to believe that either magical forces or some nefarious mage has taken refuge in or near the cave system. However, multiple investigations by local chapters of the Explorer's Guild have yielded little in the way of tangible proof of either natural or supernatural causes.
