Castleport Library

The Castleport Library is home to the county's collection of literature, histories, biographies, and magical tomes. It also plays a role in the education of many of the poorer locals or those seeking to gain greater understanding of the world.

Purpose / Function

The Library of Castleport functions as both an education institution as well as a repository for knowledge.

Alterations

Initially built in 985, the library was little more than a single-story square building with a few shelves worth of books. With the signing of the Charter of Knowledge Preservation in 1072, the library was able to secure funding for a massive expansion. Starting in 1074, the old stone structure was subsumed by the newer, larger building.   This new construction would take three years to complete and even longer to fill with material. But present within the facility would be multiple small classrooms, sections for the preservation and copying of tomes, as well areas broken out by topics. The staffing of the library expanded as well from one librarian to a full complement of specialists.    Meanwhile, the original structure had most of its materials moved out into the main hall and was converted into a restricted section, accessible by only a few. This section of the library would house books and tomes of forbidden lore and magics deemed too dangerous or heretical for general consumption.

Defenses

The restricted section of the library, accessible by lock and key available only to a few, is also guarded by several magic spells. It is not publicized exactly what kind of magic guards this part of the library, but rumors suggest that it may be anywhere from magic traps to golems.
