Ports' Gambit Session 10

General Summary

An Itsy Bitsy Spider...

In the basement of the Castleport Library, the party debated their next move. The darkness of the hallway reached out past the dust-covered wooden walls and grabbed at their senses. Torque could almost see the movement of a shadow dancing across the floor, but dismissed it as a trick of the darkness.
Chupa Saltamontes handed Penguin a torch to compensate for his lack of darkvision. He lit it and headed down the grim hallway, his feet click-clacking along the stonework. He wasn't paying attention to his surroundings when he finally noticed that he had become entangled in a giant web. He struggled briefly to break free, but failed. As he relaxed in frustration, he noticed a pair of spider swarms approaching him silently but quickly.
Penguin hurled a bolt of fire from his fingertips, hitting several of the small creatures. The other group swarmed the wizard, enveloping him in their sea of limbs. The wizard dropped as the second swarm began to attack.
The rest of the party, seeing what was happening to Penguin, finally began to approach. Spruce Springstream took the lead and sent a wave of musical notes and insults at the attacking spiders that somehow killed about half of them. Torque took a look at the flame from Penguin's torch and magically expanded it. The fire burned bright and hot and ignited the webs all up and down the hallway. A high pitched roar could be heard echoing from around the corner, followed by a tap-tap-tapping sound. 
The spiders began to flee after several more were incinerated by Torque's magic. Penguin could feel the life slip from him. With his final act, he locked eyes with Chupa, grabbed one of the remaining spiders, and bit into it. His world faded into darkness and his body fell still. Penguin was dead.

A Slightly Larger Spider...

Chupa sprinted into action. She rounded the corner, activated her javelin of lightning. She was the first to lay eyes on the beast: a 10-foot long spider. Blue and white lightning shot off as it sailed into massive, hairy thorax of the beast. It punctured the beast and it let out a roar of pain that could be felt reverberating in the chests of the adventurers. Electricity arced off the spider's limbs and hairs. It charged.
Spruce stood ready with his Doss Lute. He belted out a melody... really more of a series of incoherent notes than anything else. The dischordant melody hit the spider like a sword. If the spider could blink it would've closed its eyes in distress. It shook, sputtering out ichor and bile. The creature went limp and hit the floor with a thud.
Torque collected Penguin's possessions. The party vowed not to leave the young wizard here, but they had a quest to fulfill, and they wouldn't let his death be in vain. They knew that Qi'faren Elesh was bad news and they wouldn't let him get his hands on that book.

Just Around the Corner...

The party continued through the old stonework. The hallway continued in a circle until it arrived at a large, oval-shaped room. Two suits of armor stood watch over the room, while a simple wooden bookshelf sat idly against the western wall.
Kregsmum approached the shelves and began to search through them. She pulled out a book and examined it. The tight, leather bound cover seemed to almost sing to her. As she opened it, a shadowy figure sprang out and began to materialize. Chupa, once again thinking fast, pulled out her flask of holy water, closed to the distance, and threw it at the shadow. It writhed in agony, but as it did so, Torque could hear a metallic thud behind her. The suit of armor had sprung to life and began to approach the party...
