County Slate

County Slate is a county in the southern Truris Kingdom. It is controlled by Countess Nadja Terrellez and is bordered by County Navania and the County of Castleport on its east.

Assets

Several castles dot the landscape of this scenic county, including Calber Fort, located in the Gonola Fields on the crest of the Hurlement Caldera, and Sevenberg Keep, where it maintains a watch over the Sea of Nokostead. Several small keeps and garrisons can also be found in some of towns, such as Fairshield and Middlerich as well.   Each of these bastions contains its own garrisons - usually about a company's worth of men - as well as provides for a troop of cavalry. During peacetime, these mounted warriors often serve as messengers for official business between the towns and villages, or as tax collectors.   The county, despite having much of the Middlerich Wilds, the Hastlet Woods, and the Slate Forest, does not maintain much of a fleet. This is due, largely, to the difficulty of transporting large volumes of lumber across the terrain. In fact, with the exception of the Middlerich Wilds, little lumbering actually transpires in the county. The abandoned village of Slate is a testament to the challenges faced by loggers.

Territories

The county stretches across a portion of the southern coast of Oduth in the Truris Kingdom along the north coast of the Sea of Nokostead. The western edge of the county is marked by Middlerich Run all the way up to and along the course of Bamboo Creek. Its eastern border with County of Castleport and part of County Slate is bound by the Arching Creek and the Lashfail Stream, respectively. The remainder of the border with County Slate is fuzzy at best, as no real survey has been done to demarcate it. This has caused some degree of friction between the two counties over the years, especially where law enforcement and taxes are concerned.   Travelers can explore part of the Hurlement Caldera along the south-western coast of the county. The extinct volcano gives way to the Gonola Fields as you climb up the Starlight Peninsula. According to some, an ancient civilization was swallowed by the sea millenia ago in this area and that the treasures of their people are waiting to be claimed by intrepid adventurers.   The county claims the city of Middlerich as its capitol and seat of power. Other notable settlements include Fairshield, located roughly half-way along the coastline.    Several other villages also dot the Berkwood Beck. Headed north from Fairshield, a traveler would encounter, in sequence: Rivershear, Dewcross, and Hollowbourne. Of these villages, Hollowbourne is the largest while Rivershear is the smallest. On the border with County Castleport, along the Arching Creek, lays Llethy, another small, largely agricultural village.

Agriculture & Industry

The county is known for its production of grains. So much so, that it is often referred to as the "breadbasket of the south." This is facilitated largely by the rich soils of the Gonola Fields which rests on the Hurlement Caldera, volcanic ridge on the coast of the Sea of Nokostead. The constant refreshing of the soils with nutrients, furthered by the water from Middlerich Run and its various tributaries, allow for this region to have some of the most bountiful harvests in the kingdom.   All this grain tends to fuel local breweries. In fact, there's not a town in the county that doesn't have at least one brewery. So plentiful is the ale production, that County Slate boasts the highest per capita consumption of ale in the kingdom.    The ale production has been so popular and prevalent, in fact, that large populations of dwarves have flocked to the region. Given the history of Truris Kingdom and the dwarves of Grim Knurl, this is unusual. However, it serves as a focal point for peace and reconciliation between the two neighbors and is often looked at as an exemplar to both.

Major Exports
Grains from the Gonola Fields and beer and ale from the breweries make up the bulk of this breadbasket's exports. The county has always been an agricultural powerhouse, and it provides much of the food consumed in the wider region.    It is said than an army marches on its belly. County Slate has owed much of its freedom to its ability to feed armies - both foreign and domestic - over the years.
