County Navania
County Navania is a coastal county in the Truris Kingdom, situated on the Sun Coast. With a violent history, the county has been shaped by conflicts and power struggles. Its military relies on a levy system, noble-led units, and a small standing army. The county's terrain is rugged, with hills, forests, and rivers, making travel and trade challenging. Despite this, Navania trades internally and externally, exchanging goods like agricultural products, livestock, and crafts. The county's strategic location and natural resources create opportunities for economic growth, but also attract threats from banditry, piracy, and neighboring counties.
History
The history of Navania is a violent one. Located on the Sun Coast - a natural invasion route between Embermire and the cities to the south - Navania has experienced periods of strength and weakness.
In 876, the Principality of Navania had a burgeoning shipbuilding industry and was rising to regional prominence under the leadership of Pilaidros Colargi, the 4th Prince of Navania. In that year, he invaded the Principality of Embermire in a bid to seize the throne upon the death of their regent, Prince Luke Kirsk. There had been a question regarding the line of succession, with Colargi claiming to be the rightful heir due to his status as the eldest son of the eldest sister of the Colargi Dynasty.
This conflict would come to be known as the The War of the Embermire Succession and it would last for the next year. Ultimately, however, Navania would lose this war and would give rise to the eventual establishment of the Truris Kingdom.
Over the following centuries, the principality would enter into various other conflicts with some of its neighbors, including the County of Castleport and County Slate. These smaller scale military actions would meet with varying degrees of success or failure or stalemate.
In 1128, the principality agreed with the consensus of the Council of Embers and recognized Nasem Jesson as the first king of what would be known as the Truris Kingdom. As part of that agreement, the Principality of Navania would become an autonomous county within the kingdom under the leadership of a Count.
Territories
County Navania rests on what is known as the Sun Coast: a stretch of land in the eastern Truris Kingdom between the Temistane River to the north and just shy of the Bog of Oroworth to the south. The county itself only extends as far north as Valrane Creek, a mere 7.5km south of the Temistane. It is nestled in between County of Castleport to the south, County Slate to the west, and County Sunwall to the north.
The southwestern portion of the county consists of a region known as the Amboro Hills. Several mines - both known and forgotten - dot this landscape and provide explorers and adventurers plenty of opportunity to risk their lives for the sake of buried treasure. Multiple ruined settlements and fortification lie further westward as travelers get into the base of the Ice-Crowned Mountain.
Military
Recruitment
County Navania has a long standing history of primarily relying on a levy system for its military and security needs. Men are required to serve for a period of one to three months during times of conflict, with women being actively encouraged to serve as well. It is the responsibility of the village and town nobles to organize the levies as well as provide training and arms. Levies are typically lightly armored and equipped with simple weapons such as spears and bows. These units are largely used for defensive purposes, such as garrisoning castles, fortifications, or seized territory.Noble Leadership
While overall command falls to the count or countess of Navania, smaller units, and those from any specific town or village, fall under the command of the local noble. Often composed of groups of levies, the nobles also bring with them heavily armored knights, men-at-arms, and mounted archers depending on the resources available. During times of war, nobles are obligated to provide a certain number of armed soldiers.Small Standing Army
The county itself has a small standing army comprised of professional soldiers, usually led by the count or countess. This is often able to draw from additional resources not available to lower nobles, and is composed of experienced men-at-arms, archers, and engineers. The standing army is repsonsible for defending the county capital, Navania, key strongpoints, and strategic locations. They tend to be equipped with the best armor and weapons available, including siege engines and artillery. They have the ability to act as a rapid response force to deal wioth threats before the levies can be mobilized, and will often cooperate with the local militias.Trade & Transport
Ground Transport
All of the coastal towns are interconnected via a network of semi-secure roads that generally follow the contours of the coastline. These roads, particularly the ones closer to the larger towns, are paved with cobblestone. In between the smaller towns the roads are often unimproved pathways. During the rainy season, these dirt roads often become clogged with mud and become difficult to traverse. This has contributed to a network of unmapped and unimproved roads criss-crossing the countryside and some of the lower lying areas. The county is crisscrossed by a network of unmapped and unimproved roads, tracks, and trails, making navigation challenging for outsiders. These roads have been worn down by generations of foot and animal traffic. Most were created by villagers, travelers, traders, and adventurers without any central planning or maintenance. The roads are frequently treacherous with rough geography and bandits that create multiple hazards for travelers.Trade
Internally, the county's trade is primarily focused on agricultural products, livestock, and local crafts. The villages and towns trade with one another through caravans and individual traders. Local craftsmen, such as blacksmiths, carpenters, and weavers, trade their wares within the county. The county also trades with neighboring counties, such as County Castleport and County Sunwall via overland routes. Other counties, such as County Embermire or County Kilbourne are typically reached by sea trade, although overland convoys are not unheard of.
