Windless Cliffs

The Windless Cliffs are a ten-mile scar of rugged, reddish-brown terrain, a perilous gauntlet separating the eastern plains from the shadowed depths of the Slate Forest. Jagged cliffs rise hundreds of feet, creating unpredictable wind patterns and a treacherous path for travelers.

Geography

A Scar in the Landscape

The valley cuts a swathe through the surrounding terrain for about 10 miles. It acts as the boundary and demarcation between the Wildhorse Pastures and the Slate Forest to the north, and the Beckwood Valley to the south. At its widest, the valley is approximately 4.7 miles wide (as the crow flies).   The cliffs themselves are composed of layered reddish-brown clay, giving the entire valley a distinctive hue. They rise seeply on either side of the valley, reaching heights of 100 - 150 feet in some places. They are characterized by a rugged, uneven surface with numerous outcroppings and crevices.   The western end of the valley offers a narrow road, known as The Scarred Pass, that leads into Slate Forest. The road, barely wider than a goat trail, cuts through the valley, making travel slow and treacherous.

Ecosystem

The reddish-brown clay of the region, combined with the wind patterns and limited rainfall, creates a dry environment. Vegetation tends to be sparse and tough. The scrubby bushes have deep root systems and there are plenty of thorny plants, coupled with hardy grasses capable of surviving the rocky soil.   The cliffs themselves are primarily rock and clay, offering little sustenance for most life. Small insects and arachnids, along with a few lizards and snakes, inhabit the land.

How far is it from the Sanguine Abyss?

The closest part of the Windless Cliffs is 1.5 miles (~2.4 km) northwest of the Sanguine Abyss. I keep everything in a GIS specifically for these types of questions from my players. :D
