Shadows in the Harbor Session 20

General Summary

I Was Wondering... Are You Hiring?

The party headed back in the direction of the Aggressive Goblin tavern, having realized that they've got some time to kill. Fel'Shu was adamant that the South Wind Trading Company would pay for their crimes, but some of the others were more inclined to bring it to the Viscount. But Fel'Shu was persistent... and persuasive. He decided that the best thing to do was to purge them with cleansing fire. The party agreed, and they changed course for the harbor to get a lay of the land.   As they neared the docks and the sound of the men moving cargo began to fill the air they realized that they've all had run-ins with the South Wind at one point in time or another and that they were all known quantities to them. And unless they wanted an all out brawl on their hands, especially seeing as how the South Wind seemed to have gotten some intimidating new help, they would have to try to find a new way in. Malark was the only one among them that hadn't had a direct encounter with the South Wind, so he would be the one to try to infiltrate the group.   The rest of the group waited outside of the harbor area while Malark entered. He counted at least 20 South Wind men working the docks that day. It wasn't long before one of them spotted him and called him over. A gruff looking man who stank of stale beer and sweat looked at Malark and asked what his business was in the area. Malark responded that he was looking for work and had heard that the South Wind was hiring. The man had a good laugh at him as he made comments on Malark's slender physique. Malark insisted and finally the man brough him over to the headquarters building.   Entering the former Merchant's Guild headquarters, Malark saw a young woman sitting at a desk with a ledger while a middle-aged man with brown hair stood over her. Malark recognized him as being the one surrounded by men on the way out of town a few days earlier. The thug introduced Malark to the man, who he identified as Medarin Clubs, the head of the local chapter of the South Wind.   Medarin, ever polite as he was, asked how he could help and inquired if Malark had any business that the South Wind could handle. Actually, Malark countered, he was looking for work. Medarin looked him up and down and inquired as to his name. Malark answered honestly, but immediately felt something was awry. He noticed that Medarin was looking past him at the wall behind him. Malark glanced in that direction and noticed that there was a wanted poster on the wall, with the name "Malark" and a basic description. Medarin smiled at the elf and summoned his thug back into the room.   The gruff man from before entered the room and Medarin told him to take him outside and show him what gets done while nodding at the poster. The man understood and escorted Malark out to the docks. After seeming to walk him around and give him the briefest of tours, the gruff man punched Malark in the face and told him to get out of here. Beaten and not willing to risk a full engagement with all the others at the docks, Malark decided to take his advice and headed back to the party.

We Didn't Start the Fire

Malark returned to the group and they were all in full agreement that they would infiltrate the docks at night and try to burn down the warehouse. In the meantime, though, they would rest at the tavern.   The group waited until after dark before heading back to the docks. Fel'Shu took the high ground and scaled the two storey warehouse to keep a look out. Malark cast invisibility on Keck who headed into the lion's den. Meanwhile Malark and Damakos stood back as a quick reaction force.   Keck snuck into the warehouse area without any problems. The docks were considerably less active, but there was still a small group of South Wind members present to guard the buildings. Four of them stood watch over their target, while another three or four stood in front of the headquarters. The rogue approached the gate, but it was locked. He attempted to pick it, but he just ended up breaking his lockpick (when he rolled a 1!!) Running out of options, Keck needed something and he needed it fast. He started shaking the doors which had the effect of spooking the guards and they ran off to the other ones at the headquarters.   Meanwhile Damakos used his thaumaturgy from a distance to create booms and slam doors at the headquarters. A scream could be heard from inside the building as Matilde Carson came running out. He and Malark could hear the chaos from where they stood.   Keck decided to ratchet up the force and broke out a crowbar and forced the door open while nobody was looking. He entered the small courtyard and did the same the building's door revealing a dimly lit room with several crates of various sizes in it. A stairwell in the back led to the second floor. He began to look around and noticed at least three large crates, similar to the ones in the Sanguine Abyss with the mark of The Society of the Silk Rose on them.    He needed to know more, but he could hear someone's voice calling out from the second floor and the sound of footsteps coming down the stairs. Keck waited, and went up when a Githyanki came down and began looking around. He headed up and found more crates, as well as a small office. Keck entered and looked around briefly, fully aware that the Githyanki could come back at any minute. He found a ledger and stuffed it in his bag. At that moment the Githyanki came upstairs and headed for the office. Keck had to get out, but he was trapped. So he waited for the Githyanki to open the door before slyly skulking out. He could hear the Githyanki looking around the office for the ledger.    He knew that he couldn't leave the warehouse standing, and took the opportunity to light a fire both upstairs and down before escaping into the darkness.    Fel'Shu, still on the roof of the building which was rapidly catching fire, was forced to flee, but not before he saw the downstairs door open and "nothing" come out, followed soon thereafter by a Githyanki running out calling out "fire!"   The party must now decide what to do with this ledger they've found, attend the banquet, and hope that the fire doesn't engulf more than their intended target...
