Ports' Gambit Session 13

General Summary

So About That Book...

The group left the confines of The Sterling Beaver in the early afternoon. It wasn't exactly cold, but not exactly warm either outside. They knew they had the book that Qi'faren Elesh wanted, but were suspicious of his intentions, and the missing book from Matilde Carson's residence was too much of a coincidence for them to not notice.   They headed over to talk to Ea Amarzian, the old tiefling woman who lived near Qi'faren's shop. The group asked Ea if she'd seen anything. She cackled and coughed a little, and replied that she had heard about their brush with the killer the night before. Spruce Springstream and Xolos tried to brush off the commentary, with Xolos quipping about how he skillfully parkoured across rooftops in hot pursuit.   Ea continued, mentioning that she'd seen a large, black-cloaked figure arrive at Qi'faren's shop in the middle of the night. It entered, and was inside the building for several minutes before it emerged and then darted across the rooftops. The group knew this was who they were looking for, and the tie to Qi'faren was undeniable at this point. They just didn't know what exactly the relationship was.   They thanked her for her information. Ea looked Xolos up and down hungrily and mentioned that he should come by and butter her biscuits. He chuckled and suggested another time maybe.   They walked up to the street to Qi'faren's shop. They stopped outside before they entered to discuss their game plan. Just outside the small wooden structure with interesting scents emanating from it sat a wooden cart with a man-sized box covered in a tarp. Leroy Jenkins decided that asking forgiveness was better than asking permission, so with his authority as a town guard, he suggested that Chupa Saltamontes take a peek under the covers.   She hopped up on to the cart and began to pry away at the wooden planks. She managed to break one open and saw a large, metallic leg inside. Before she could tell the rest of the group what she had found, the door to Qi'faren's shop swung open. The alchemist walked out and looked at the party with a great big smile. The group immediately descended on him and began to interrogate the elf.    Spruce Springstream asked if he had ever heard of The Society of the Silk Rose or if he was aware of someone called the Black Rook. Qi'faren's face became pallid   Qi'faren's countenance turned, and appeared to be less than interested in the death of Penguin, the kenku wizard. This put off Xolos, who took great offense that the death of his friend and comrade-in-arms in order to complete Qi'faren's task failed to even register with him.   Torque joined in, playing the "bad cop" role and threatening the wizard under his breath as an aside. Qi'faren heard this and challenged the sorcerer to a duel. Torque stepped down, and Qi'faren demanded his book for which he paid a fair price already. Xolos demanded to know what the book was to be used for, and commented that there had been a kidnapping where they kidnappers had also taken a book. He thought it was odd that there were so many people looking for books, but Qi'faren dismissed the observation as a mere coincidence.    Refusing to give up the book, Qi'faren threw his hands up in frustration and anger with the party's failure to adhere to the contract. He returned to his shop, slamming the door.    Leroy chose to use his position to take the cart that Chupa had remained hidden in. She had told the group what she found and they thought it would be best held in the hands of the local constabulary. They took up the cart and began to pull it away.   The group hadn't even made it down the block when the box practically exploded into shards. Standing on top of the cart, glistening in the sun, stood a large metallic figure. It glared at the group, its eyes flashed red momentarily. Xolos recognized the action and believed it to be a similar creature to that of the killer.   It attacked Chupa and Xolos, but Chupa was too quick for it. Leroy jumped up and attacked in turn, laying a massive blow that tore through its armor. Xolos hurled a bolt of flame at it which garnered a reprisal from the creature. This went back and forth for a few moments, until finally Leroy landed a killing blow that sent the creature to its knees before its eyes went dark.    They inspected it, but didn't find anything of value that they could take. In the same instant, Qi'faren stepped out of his shop demanding to know what all the racket was. Upon seeing the chaos and destruction, Qi'faren could be seen muttering something in a look of absolute horror. He clearly knew of some dire consequence for what had just happened.    Leroy charged at him...
