Noshar Desert Geographic Location in Didome | World Anvil

Noshar Desert

A noon desert with hard scrabble plants most of the day but features a intense flourishing of plant life during the noontime storms. The desert is located north and more inland of the Tresbort Lakes and Plains of Tern grasslands. The derert is below the Noshar Wastes.

Geography

The Noshar Desert recives almost all of its rain within 4 Ides Cycles of noontime. This means that for the afternoon, night, and morning the desert recives no rain as is very barren. This means that desert fluctuates from very barren to full of life and color. Many of the sourthern cultures, Yenarian, Delfian, Nos Delian, see the region as a barren wasteland filled with hostile uncivilized nomadic people.

Ecosystem

Like all ecosystems of Didome, the orgamisms in the desert have to deal with the drastic temperture changes caused by the long day and night cycle.

Plants

The day cycle coupled with the lack of rain and high levels of evaporation, means that plants in the desert have a difficult time growing. The plants mainly have two strategies that they have developed. The first group of plants have developed ways to store the water from the rains and use it slowly through out the day. These plants are ussally slow growing woody shrubs. Often times the are covered in spines or have other defenses to deter animals from stealing thier stored water. The second type of plants is the desert has evolved to grow as fast as possible. These plants remain dormant for much of the day, and only start growing when the soil is wetted with rain. Most of these plants are grasslike plants that can rapidly grow during the rainy season. Some of these plants are more drought tolarant and grow during the whole rainy season, while others only grow in the few Ides Cycles when it is the rainiest. All the plants reguardless of stratergy enter a dormant period during the long dark night. These strategies create a ecosystem that for most of the day is covered in sharpe woody spiney plants, with a short window of rapid growth and color and food for herbevories.

Animals

While plants have to deal with the temperture and lack of water. The animals of the Noshar desert have to deal with those challenges and the boom and bust nature of their food supplies. The animals have several strateies for survial. First many of the animals are small in size. This allows them to need less food and makes it easier for them to find shelter during the heat of the day and during the long night. Lots animals also will enter a hiberantion state in the long night when food is scarce. Second, many animals are expert cachers of food. Storing food in hidden locations for later use. Amoung the larger fauna of the desert, many of them are migratory. Allowing them to follow the abundant food of the rainy nootime for longer and shorten the night by walking in the opposite direction of the sun. For example, the Ghat are migratory creature about 80kg in size, they follow the rainy noontime caching extra food in the form of gheegs.

History

Most civilizations have considered the Noshar Desert a barely inhabitable waste not worth living in. However, it has played an important role in some of the historical events of the past few thousand days.   First, it was the location where the prophet Da harka Darmin travelled into attempting to follow the Noshar Migration. She travelled through the desert and reched the edge of the Noshar Wastes before turning back. This trip introduced Poplar Grit to the Nil Yeni people.   Second, the Nos shar desert was always part of the land that the Tern Tribes considered thier own and used to follow the Ghat heards. However, in 3900 when Gran Saminism was spreading to the Tern Bas and the Yenarian. The tribes that did not accept the new religion were forced out of the Plains of Tern and into the Noshar deresrt; the tribes became the Tern Shar. This migration of the Tern Shar brought them in conflict with the exanding United Delfic States and a period of conflict between the two cultures ensued. The result of this was the Tern Shar were forced even deeper into the Noshar desert.
