Caturday Reads #5

  Happy Caturday!
Hope you all are doing fine and get to experience some nice spring weather. Here it's been pendulating between rain and sunshine, and the wind still carries a bit of that north to northwest bite. But I actually don't mind it so much. I'm enjoying the brighter days, and appreciate the cool temperatures lingering a little. I'm just not made for those toasty summers.
Unfortunately, I haven't managed to get any reading done these last two weeks due to health issues, but had an idea for something I could share with you all. I've got quite a collection of fantastic guides written by fellow Anvilites here in my pockets.
As it seems to become a habit, let's start with one from a #Traveller friend: Mochi. Want to expand on the natural world, it's ecosystems and the lifeforms that bind them all together? Mochimanoban released their first part of a planned series to help you do just that.

Worldbuilding Ecosystems Vol. 1
Generic article | May 8, 2024

Part 1 of a guide on worldbuilding ecosystems.

I don't know how many times I have linked this on the discord, but, it deserves to be mentioned again. Rachel Bentz's guide on writing settlements is truly in-depth and the three parts are really well paced, starting with the big questions and then diving into increasing detail in part two and three.

Settling the Issue of Settlements
Generic article | Mar 2, 2024

The First of Three Parts of a series discussing the building of believable and Grounded Settlements in a World.

In a similar vein, Qurilion wrote an excellent article on caste systems, that explains the concepts, provides examples, and what its place could be within worldbuilding.

Caste Systems in Worldbuilding: Crafting Compelling Social Structures
Generic article | Mar 13, 2024

What are Castes Systems and how can they enhance our worldbuilding?

And for the last entry for this time, Morgan Biscup offers some excellent insights and tips on how to write technology that feels believeable from the lens of your world's inhabitants.

How I Write Believable Technology
Generic article | Mar 23, 2023

Thoughts on integrating technology for deeper worldbuilding, based upon my own methods.

Broken Dulcet Chapter 18 is Live!

Check out Chapter 18: Diz-stressing Diz-closures here   Lapis, Patch and Dagby learn their Stars-blessed enemy has had more influence on the underground in Jiy than previously suspected.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy #scifi   ****   I have done about 10K words on the Abyss of Dreams re-write this week (and deleted about the same). If you want to know where my time has gone, it's been into that. Will I make my Oct deadline? I hope, I hope.   I've also been enjoying Dragon's Dogma 2, and been disappointed in Endless Ocean. I loved the first two games, and how intimate, beautiful, and wondrous they were. This one is not that :(. There's something special about getting an up-close pic of a fish to file, that a long-shot scan that grabs a whole bunch of IDs misses. And the AI voice is awful. *sad tears*   ****   And I'm off, to continue work on the 4th Wellspring Book and working on Knavish Canto's hitting 100K views art.   Take care, all

What I'm Reading! Issue 184

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 184!

Welcome to May, or Play May for anyone that made an adventure. I saw several crop up, and the ones I have read so far would be a fun game!

But, outisde that, how is the worldbuilding coming? Making progress on your web serial, fiction or other project? I hope so. What are you most proud of about it so far? Just remember, take time to rest as you go. It's a marathon, not a sprint. I know, I know... that saying is everywhere. But really, it's true.

This time, I've found some adventures, an organization, a species and more. Lots of inspiration here this time, no matter if you're working on a story or an RPG plot! So, without further delay!

Here is the current crop that REALLY stood out for me! Enjoy!

Caturday Reads #4

  Happy Caturday!
It's been a while since the last entry, but I just didn't have enough energy to do both reading and writing - so I prioritized getting my latest article about stinky babies done. Been doing a bit better the latter half of this week, so I got both my planned reading done, half an article written, and a bit of painting underway.
As for the actual reading part of this Caturday Reads blog, I got four great articles for you this week.
The first one is a #Traveller shoutout, from our own amazing chapter leader AwsmChimera. Their character articles always paint such vivid images of the people they're about, with how they weave text, quotes, little story snippets, art, and even morif-music together.
Calenvo: Lord of Remembrance
Character | Mar 21, 2024

Next one is a fascinating phenomena described by PrippyMontyPoppyCock. These were one the WE'22 entries that really stood out to me, and not just for the eye-catching title. It's fun and odd and quirky on the surface, but has a such an interesting and deep explanation.
The Troll on Porridge Island
Physical / Metaphysical Law | Dec 12, 2022

The below articles by Kriltch have been sitting in my reading list a long time now, and I've read them before but really wanted to showcase them. They're probably among my favorites when it comes to weaving together knowledge of the laws of nature in a wholly in-universe manner.

Broken Dulcet Ch 16 & 17 is Live!

Read Chapter 16 here.   Read Chapter 17 here.   Based on info from Danaea's decoded notes, Lapis embarks on a rebel chase.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy #sciencefiction   ****   What have I been doing this week? Re-linking my World Anvil images to my CSS code so they don't break upon server transfer. Yeah, this has taken a lot of time. Have I missed some? I bet I have. Fun times ahead, but since I'm revamping the book sites anyway, it's fine. I'll just say 'under construction' and call it good.   I also got a shiny new desktop that should speed up art/video/3D creation *fingers crossed*. I spent two days grumbling about how much I hate installing all my apps on a new machine. Some companies make this difficult because they want you to buy another license, rather than keep the current one (DaVinci Resolve, ClipStudioPaint). Frustration is not what I want to feel upon getting a shiny new desktop.   ****   What am I stoked for this week? The new Endless Ocean game. I loved the first two because I got to take pics of sealife and plants and coral. And I'll be happy when A Thousand Year Door revamp makes it to the Switch.   I was also reminded this week about how US marines duped an AI meant to track human movement by hiding under a cardboard box Solid Snake style and creeping up on it. It's not just in video games, y'all!   ****   Have a great week!   Kwyn

Stormwatch Forecast: WAWA Finalists, Last hours for Voting, off to Europe!

As the title of this post hints towards, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind for me, trying to get ready for my study abroad in Barcelona; I didn't even realize that it was already the last day for WAWA voting!
If you haven't yet cast those fabulous votes, then I'd love to invite you to check out the three finalists I have in the running, and also just serve as one more reminder to check out all the amazing entries and vote accordingly!
WAWA 2024 Finalists
Generic article | Apr 25, 2024

The 6 articles I have submitted for the 2024 Worldbuilding Awards -- if you think they are deserving, please give them a vote!

As for me, this update post will probably be pretty short and sweet. I'm still packing and getting ready and dealing with life stuff of things like my partner's car dying and trying to figure out how to help with that before I leave in a couple days xD I am very excited for my trip though, it's going to be a nice vacation from crazy hard semesters and an opportunity to see parts of the world that I've never been to! I am going to take so many pictures and look at so much architecture :D Most of my time will be spent in Barcelona where my schoolwork and accommodations are, but I plan on making some trips out of the city here and there too -- I have the opportunity, I wanna do it! Any fun recommendations? :D
And with that, that's that! Looking forward to travels, looking forward to summer camp, and looking forward to rest. What is it you're looking forward to as we get into the summer months here? Any fun plans? :D Let me know!

Sharing the love for the (now-ending!) Worldbuilding Awards! Go vote if you havent yet!

Hey there!   You may remember me threatening to showcase some of my favourite stuff from the Worldbuilding Awards shortlist... Well time got away from me, so I will have to do this briefly.   If youre reading this because you already follow me, you may know that I was absolutely blown away by the nominations I received for a few of the categories. If youre new here, hello new person, nice to meet you!   In any case I wanted to take this opportunity to briefly thank all of you for this amazing support. It already is the highest honor for me to be considered a part of the few who made it onto the shortlists. There are so many amazing creators out there and to count myself among them is honestly still very surreal to me.   Speaking of: I would like to take this time to highlight just a few of the amazing people who also can be voted for. These are not necessarily the exact ones I voted for myself, but they all would have deserved the votes nonetheless!   So in no particular order, please do check out these amazing beans and their great work!   Finally, this brings me to my request for anyone still reading! Go vote!! Do it here! Give your vote to anyone on the list who seems to deserve it. If some of you decide to vote for me, thank you so much, but ultimately, thank you already for getting me to this point :)   #WAWA2024 #SharetheLove #GoVoteAlready

What I'm Reading! Issue 182

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 182!

How's April coming along? Hopefully, your projects are were you want them. What about Adventure April? Did you give it a try? Making an adventure is a fantastic challenge. It's similar to preparing to write a story, but it's just the planning, outline, supporting cast, and all. Inside all of that is always some worldbuilding, too.

This time, I think I've got a good batch for inspiration for adventures! They were really fun to read and got my imagination going, that's for sure!

So, without further delay!

What I'm Reading! Issue 181

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 181!

So, there you are! Working on your adventure for Adventure April? I hope so! I'm looking forward to reading it! There have been several coming up, and every last one has been just so inspired. Imagination at its finest! So, I'm all board for more! Let's see them!

Also, did you catch the announcement for the Worldbuilding Awards? We're getting down to the wire now to see who gets "Best of" for 2024! Honestly, I love all the entries from the very start on. They are amazing, fascinating reading. Seriously, go read them. Of course, go read those that made it to the shortlist, but also go back and re-read all the entries from before the shortlists. I have, and every time I do, I find something new to enjoy. A magical item, place, piece of lore that is pure worldbuilding gold.

So go! Fuel that imagination! Go read and give your imagination wings! It'll thank you for it.

Speaking of short stories

Speaking of short stories, a couple of months ago, I wrote a round-up of lit mags that both honor the classics (especially swashbuckling sword & sorcery tales) and meaningfully innovate on them. If you want to broaden your fantasy and sci-fi reading, I highly recommend checking them out! Link below.

A short story from a yet-unexplored land!

In this month's spirit of adventure (and short story-writing), I've released a story for subscribers to read!
However, I can't go 100% public with the story because I'm waiting to see whether it get accepted for a magazine submission. For the time being, I've made it available to subscribers only, **but** anyone can subscribe to my world for free. You should have the option to subscribe if you click through to the story, or you can find the subscribe button on my world's homepage.
This piece is certainly a change of pace from what I've been writing, but often, different settings warrant such a change of pace, don't they? I hope y'all enjoy it regardless! Happy building and happy writing!

Been working on the Evenacht intro video this week. I am definitely not the fastest editor out there. Here's a still of Darkness that I'm planning to use.

dark2.jpg

  ****
I plan to write a short story for Adventure April. I still haven't decided what yet, and the month's nearly half over! Think think think...
So a lot of work on my art/videos have slowed to a crawl because Adobe products are complaining I don't have enough cache available to run them (this is before I even open a file). I cleared space over the amounts I chose in the settings, and they still complain. So it's been a back-and-forth between other apps, which, again, kinda slows down work. There are other annoyances with my desktop, like constant game crashes, so I'm wondering if there's something amiss with the computer. I know some more recent Windows updates haven't been kind to certain PCs, but reinstalling previous updates hasn't changed things. And yes, I pay for a virus etc checker to keep my comp clean.
So creating the covers for the paperback versions of my Wellspring Dragons has not gone as planned. I'm taking the "all things in time" approach. It all will happen when it happens.
  ****
I hope you all have the greatest week and take care!

What I'm Reading! Issue 180

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 180!

How's your April going? Are you giving Adventure April a try? I'll say plots can be difficult to get balanced right. But! I've run so many plots with rough edges that turned out fantastic. Really, it's all about the fun, right? It's worth giving it a try.

This time I've got here are some really nice articles that could be wonderful inspiration for an advenure setting, or a challenge, or a plot twist! Gotta love those plot twists, right? With these, there are some really inspired ideas that have some serious depth. They gave me all sorts of ideas for plots when I read through them! What do you think?

Two-ish weeks to go!   In the brief moments of reprieve I've been doing some doodling for some God-husk redesigns, and also brainstorming and theorycrafting some future-Cathedris fun things like spaceships >:) I post about em over on my Discord Server, if you ever want to take a look!   Also the #WAWA2024 first round of voting is nearly complete, and omg there's so many fantastic entries to look at. If you haven't yet voted, that's okay, because there is a TON to go through! If you're still looking for some good entries, check out the shortlists and shared articles from people I've been seeing posted around these days -- they have a lot of great suggestions in there! And if you're STILL looking for some articles to consider, you can even take a look at my submissions if you like!   But anyways, I hope you had a fantastic March, and here's to an even better April <3   #Stormwatch #UnofficialChallenge

Caturday Reads #3

  Happy Caturday!
How's your week been? Mine's been less than great but trying to scrape by as well as I can. Had to skip last saturday because I've just been way too sick. For the same reason, I kept this week's reading light. Let's get straight to it:
I want to showcase another favorite from a fellow #Traveller, Elizabeth Trkova. One of their SC'23 entries about a condition that, while bad, may be a blessing in disguise protecting them from something worse.
Ina Sakhu
Condition | Jul 31, 2023

Next up is from last World Ember, written by Catoblepon. I'm cheating a little here as I didn't exactly need to re-read it, but I really like their stuff for Daeliha.
Dryad
Species | Dec 19, 2023

A dryad is a magical representation of the forest they live in, whom life is tied to the tree used in their summoning.

Last one is by Jason Milliken, a really nice read and I liked a lot how the different paths were presented so succintly.

Two weeks left...

To improve your articles for my unofficial Spring Improvement Challenge:

Spring Improvement
Generic article | May 8, 2024

Dust off an old article and bring it up to your current standards. Show off how much you've improved over the months/years since joining World Anvil!

There are 7 excellent entries so far with lots of improvements made and I look forward to seeing more! These articles are from every skill level among WA users. You don't need to have a crazy formatted article with a hundred images and crazier CSS tricks to show how you improved your writing. Showing a better understanding of punctuation, containing your text better, using BBcode more effectively, etc. is as much of a meaningful improvement as figuring out the CSS to wrap words around an image.

Also don't forget, there are 9 unofficial challenges running right now across a wide range of subjects. If you want your work to be seen by more people, entering a few of them and leaving a global journal entry with links to your articles is an excellent way to do that!
As for me, I have not entered any yet, but I have ideas for most of them. Currently stuck on Dani's Adventure's in Romance challenge, because I suck at writing anything with dialogue and I am determined to get something written no matter how cringey it is! The other ones are going to be way easier once I finally get this one done, because they all actually related to each other in some way.

In other, smaller, #Stormwatch specific news -- I've finished polishing my articles for the WAWA! A few articles of mine had huge overhauls (Like Anabelle, Days of Creation, and Cult of the Mind), and you might have seen the notifications pushed for that. March is Marching on

Hello Everyone!
As I have been finding everyway to procrastinate on the manuscript, I was participating in #unofficalchallenge, #Springimprovements, by Chrispy_0! I wanted to pick an article that was actually going to be relevant as I soldier on in the plot of the story So! Here we have Forgotten Family Old, and The Forgotten Family New.
In my usual fashion, I may or may not have went down a long rabbit hole doing this spring cleaning. So that being said, notes on another settlement! Skjalich.
Also, I was in a mood, so I had a bit of a departure to my narrative based style, and wanted to do some poetry. Warmth felt again in The Raven's heart and The Great Mother awaits patiently.
Really need to finish doing the rewrite for Ilgor too... Eh, I can sleep when I'm dead. Have at it if your interested Ilgor of the Skullbrood Clan.
This post is getting too long, thanks everyone for getting this far! Still plugging away on more and more content for the world as I experience it with my characters!

What I'm Reading! Issue 176

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 176!

So, how is your March going? Making progress on your project and worldbuilding? Or just taking it easy. Maybe it's both? Both is good! Also, how about those Uofficial Challenges. Just amazing aren't they? I've got a couple I'm working on, but only two I think. No need to get burned out, right? Which ones are you giving a try?

As for reading, there is so much to catch up on! (WorldEmber wasn't THAT long ago after all). Which means there is a ton of inspiration there! But I won't say anymore. I've found some really interesting ones this time!

So, without further delay!

Here is the current crop that REALLY stood out for me! Enjoy!

Caturday Reads #2

  Happy Timezones!
This week was all hectic days and exhausted evenings, but I'm glad I managed to get my reading done and some painting too despite that.
How was your week? Any signs of spring yet? Here we had the weather throw us for a loop with some nice sunny weather during the week, pour snow over us yesterday and letting it all melt today, so we got a nice, wet mix of slurry and mud to greet us outside. On a more positive note, I do notice actually waking up to a bright morning has improved my mood a lot.
Today, I thought I'd showcase a favorite from a fellow #Traveller, Sh4d0wPh03n1x. A must-read if you're thinking of getting your own sustainable, flying heat source.
How Not To Get Eaten by Various Phoenixes
Item | Dec 10, 2022

A little handbook written by an anonymous Phoenix Master to help adventurers find all the phoenixes and earn their trust. Includes tips, tricks, useful and important useless information, and a good sense of humour.

I also ended up re-reading the first three scenes of Rin Garnett' urban fantasy story The Demon of Starr Island. Words are failing me a little, but shortly said I love it and can't wait for the next part to drop.

Generic article | Nov 15, 2023

Last one is a Summer Camp '23 submission, by Tanai Cuinsear. It's a really good example of how a bit of origin and history can give something that at first sight might seem quite simple and light a lot of character.

Tradition / Ritual | Jul 18, 2023

Bonus

I'm still a bit too mentally tired to word a lot and word well, so writing is still very slow. Painting is going better though, at this rate I'll have at least one colored piece for each of my planned (and already written) species from Biegjun.

What I'm Reading! Issue 175

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 175!

Well, looks like its March already! February always go by way too fast for me. How about for you? Still tackling your goals for your world, or worlds? How's the worldbuilding coming? Speaking of that, looks like we've got an Unofficial Challenge (#UnofficialChallenge) month here! I've seen three or four already. To see them, smash the #UnofficialChallenge tag. They'll show up.

I've already seen a couple that I might try. One lines up with what I'm trying to worldbuild lately, and the other? Well, it's something I've been wanting to do for a while anyway! Now is as good a time as any! Think you might try any? Which ones?

But, other than reading up on the Unofficial Challenges, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

Caturday Reads #1

Good timezones everyone!

Welcome to the beginning of my personal reading challenge: Caturday Reads.   The plan is simple: pick a number of articles, read them through the week, and then share them in a journal entry every saturday. The last step is both for the sake of personal accountability, and because wanted to show my appreciation for all these great pieces, written by so many fantastic people, by sharing them here with you.   To keep this activity stress-free and engaging long-term, I've jotted down a few guidelines for myself:   1. I will not feel obligated to comment on articles.
2. It's okay to skip a week if I'm not okay; there's always next week.
3. I should aim to read 2-4 from my reading list every week.
4. Reading articles from new authors found on the discover tab is an optional bonus.   Let's see how it goes. And like, immediately disregard one of my guidelines by posting five entries. :-)   I'll start with two from the very bottom of my list - the 'Oldies but Goldies' - that's been sitting there from before my long hiatus between 2020-2022. (Both which I now noticed I had, oops, appeared to accidentally double-click the like buttons of - time to finally remedy that)

Unofficial Challenge: Spring Improvement

Spring Improvement
Generic article | May 8, 2024

Dust off an old article and bring it up to your current standards. Show off how much you've improved over the months/years since joining World Anvil!

I decided to do this for unofficial challenge month in March. Runs from tomorrow until the 31st of March. There is of course a badge for participating!
I wasn't going to make a challenge without making some sort of example article myself, so I spent some time updating an old article to my current standard. Here is the comparison: Galactic Council - Old vs. Galactic Council - New. Not perfect, but much better looking and much easier to read than before! (I hope to eventually update all articles in my neglected sci fi world to that standard!)

Stormwatch Forecast: Unofficial challenge month is coming!

Ah, 2024, wh-- wait what happened to January?! What do you mean we're almost done February?!?!?
Classic Stormbril, losing all track of time :D It's been a busy start to the year for me. Work on the Trinkets system for Cathedris, school ramping up to full speed, and travel plans for my Study Abroad semester coming this summer. It's been a lot to handle!
I've managed to get a few other small things done in there as well, at least. One thing I'm really happy with is getting all 21 prompts done for the Cabinet of Curiosities! I did it in lovely Cathedris Snippet style, where each prompt had a mini article under 50 words written. Check them out if you like!
But the big news I want to share is that I am taking part in #UnofficialChallenge month! I have just finished putting together the challenge page for this year's version of Marchitecture, an unofficial challenge that I ran last year that I was really happy with. This year there's a unique spin on it, and I am excited to see what people come up with! Please, take a look :D

What I'm Reading! Issue 174

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 174!

Well, here we are at the end of February! How is the worldbuilding coming? Did you fill up your Cabinet of Curiosities? I know I didn't, but hey that's ok. That means there is more room for later, right?

But now that it's done, time for a little breather. It's always good to take some time to just read after writing and worldbuilding away. Rest breaks. They're always a good thing. Because, you just know there's more challenges around the corner. Official, unofficial, even ones you've set up for yourself!

For me, I've tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

Here is the current crop that REALLY stood out for me! Enjoy!

Thankful

I am thankful for my family (Biological and Extended). I am thankful for WA. I never realized I had so much to work through until I started worldbuilding. Some of my own stories were so cathartic I cried spontaneously for days. What started as a platform to play with/test AI consistency, has turned into a world with living breathing people/places/things. I am thankful for my work team, without them I would not have "off-work" time. Last Christmas was the first I have been able to spend with biological family in 37+ years. All because of them. I am thankful for my companions (furred and human (none that are both yet)). Their support and unwavering love have sustained me for 57 years. I am thankful for my El-sod family, who have become real extensions of my inner voices and become dear to me. And as always I am thankful for the culinary delights from all over this great world!
PS: I am grateful for a Spectrum diagnosis. It is very late in life, but it has helped me to pack, fold and put away half a century of baggage and feelings of inadequacies in weeks/months. Better living thru awareness! #thankful #SpectrumRules #WAForTheWin

Craft a bright new world, in Ayun Sovos!

This weekend, I released something super shiny to the community: a brand new world! I invite you all to follow along as I develop the world of Ayun Sovos, a realm of charming creaturefolk driven by a passion for craft and creation, supported by the brave adventurers who venture out into the treacherous reaches of the world to fetch them the materials they need for their next big project!
Ayun Sovos

Crafting your way through any adventure!

A realm of charming creaturefolk driven by a passion for craft and creation, supported by the brave adventurers who venture out into the treacherous reaches of the world to fetch them the materials they need for their next big project!

This world is a project of love and delight in worldbuilding, and you can expect bright, cheery stories, places, people, and things all around. As I pull Malkora down a darker and more complex path moving forward, Ayun Sovos will be the warm home I can always retreat to whenever things start feeling a little too real.
I can't wait to show you all of the fun things I have planned for this world! Keep your eyes peeled for a new unofficial challenge coming your way for the month of March! :)

What I'm Reading! Issue 172

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 172!

How goes your February? Worldbuilding coming along? Hopefully, you've made some good progress on your projects! Speaking of worldbuilding, have you added a few items to your own Cabinet of Curiosities? I've seen more appear than I can keep track of! Item articles are a lot of fun to create, aren't they? Which, got me thinking...

Item worldbuilding is really decepive in a way, you know? Sure, the goal is an item. A book, sword, pistol, jetpack, or even a nice piece of jewelry. But, items in a setting represent real history. Tiny windows into culture. Sometimes its sweeping ethnicities but what about the culture for a profession like a ship's mechanic or a blacksmith? They're also moments in time that connect to characters and people. Which, really, that's how real history is made. Not so much the sweeping big events, but the small ones. People drive history with what they do... or in this case, what they make. Which, are items!

Ah, there I go again. Enough of that, let's get to the fun part, right? So, without further delay!

Here is the current crop that REALLY stood out for me! Enjoy!

Etrea Update Feb 2024

I have officially squashed two hundred stubs.
And have over a hundred more than I started with, but you know. Sisyphus, like I said before.
I am still mired in the Atlas category, but I have two more stubs left before I leave Serukis behind and move onto Zenra, and then I'll be travelling to a new continent. Looking forward to moving onto Geography, though.
As well as the stubs, I'm also working on the Cabinet of Curiosities challenge, exploring the contents of the Royal Arcanum in Kaien. I am also working on a prompt article for mushrooms, which is more than half done, and I hope I will get to share with you soon.
I am also working on the main article for Serukis (which I am named for, not the other way around). I have just about finished the first section and it's almost at 2000 words... so expect a chonker.
In other news, I recently received the Human of the Match award for WorldEmber 2023, and I cried when I heard my name. This community is so important to me and I'm glad that people feel I am giving back, even just a little.
Hope you're all having a good year so far! :)

Broken Dulcet Ch 6 and 7 are Live and Other Updates

It's a two-chapter week! Check out Chapter 6: New Orders and Chapter 7: Sneak and Yell.   Lapis and company get new orders before they sneak into the Torc Bedan base.
#sciencefantasy #darkfantasy   ****   I'm working on Evenacht: Snake's Den special artwork for reaching 100K views, and guess what? Knavish Canto is inching towards 100K too! I might do more artwork, but I also might do a short story to celebrate. Both, perhaps?   Thanks to my readers, for making this possible. Once Knavish Canto hits 100K, I'll have four books that have passed that milestone. The support keeps me going!   ****   So starting in Dec 2022, I had some health issues that did not get an antibiotic fix until April 2023 (because US healthcare sucks). I got behind on things I wanted to do, and some got shoved to the side or placed on the back burner to simmer a bit.   One of those back burner things was creating audiobooks of my stories. I was already feeling a bit bogged down with it, and uncertain how to continue. But a friend of mine has been recording her first book, chapter by chapter, and uploading the readings to YouTube. I know several authors who record snippets from their books to share on social media. This may be the way to go; recording and releasing a chapter at a time. Dividing the reading into smaller chunks may make it easier to finish because there will be definable milestones along the way.   I suppose the next question would be, should I film myself reading, or have an animated screen.   I also think it would be nice, to finish recording my award-winning articles.   ****   I've been revamping articles. This one is on Magick in my Wellspring series
Magick on Seari
Generic article | Feb 2, 2024
****   Also on the Wellspring front:   I have formatted book one, and am in the middle of book two. Now that I'm looking at paperback copies, I again mull over the titles. Fantasy is not supposed to have strange words from the story in the title, and I named the first book after the lead character; Dawn of Shiobe. So perhaps a change, to Liminal Shadows for book one, and Shades of Treachery for book two--more dark fantasy-like, I think.   ****   Have a great week, all!   Kwyn

WorldEmber2023 : Learning from Loss

Welp, no wins this year for WorldEmber, despite putting what I felt was my best foot forward.
With that comes a good hour of tears, a bit of whinging, and suffering from the familiar demons of imposter syndrome. Let it happen if you feel you need to, losing sucks! No one likes to lose, so vent out the emotions how you see fit, and don't upset anyone or cheapen anyone's victories!
Now that you've vented out the raw emotion of loss... take a deep breath and move on.
After previous events, a steady growing list of no wins in several years, I have lost days to the depression that follows awards ceremonies.
I'm going to do different this year. Instead of sitting the whole day and wallowing, I'm gonna write this journal entry to let all my fellow losers out there that at the end of the day, it is okay.
Part of winning is losing a lot, and the healthiest way to overcome loss is to think of what you are going to do next instead of wallowing in what you didn't get.
I'll start and you can comment your own if you want.
For #summercamp2024, I am going to engage in the community from day one. Get the fastest drafts I can for the 10 articles. Then use the extra time to delve into my favorites to try and get some real winners. I've made the process of creating articles smoother and more appealing in WorldEmber, so I think I got a good chance if I engage more and learn from other articles more.

Second World Anvil Article done

Aldottorai Colonial Trading Company   So, this has been the biggest article project since the month's start and only finished. So, not a pace I can keep up if I want to finish World Ember. Plus, it was a bit of a grueling project going through all that information and detail. It was super useful, at least, when it comes to how I want to frame and develop things in the series of novellas I'm working on. On the plus side, this single article accounted for close to 30% of my monthly goal.   #worldember2023 #worldember #dieselpunk #spaceopera

Ten Days of Worldember in Solaris!

So far Sky and I have written 20 articles, and about 10k words combined! We've explored a bunch of the spacecraft, and the Inner World. We've been having a blast, and I hope you are too!

What did we write so far?

The banner you see above is from Nomads of Mercury. I also wrote about the humanoid species of Mercury, Mori and Kara. We've been all over the Solar System, taking a stop by Venus' Palace of Delights and their Godqueen Titania. Kind of like how the Humans get everywhere too. I wanted to focus on what interplanetary human migration might be like, and that also got us writing about some arceology. I wrote about the Heller Cave Paintings, while Sky wrote about the Othello Shaft-hole Axe Head.   Sky's been zeroing in on spacecraft this Worldember, starting out with the watchful Aerie O-1, but also a couple classic spacecraft in the Cyklopes SSF-9 and Heretic GA-7. We get a satellite weapons system in Parelion Orbital Defender. Chatting spacecraft with Sky inspired me to write a couple of articles about conditions ships might suffer, inspiring the Cosmic Bloom and Paradisius.   We've written a few supplementary articles as well; Voluntary Indication of Position, Rhea, Jupiter Stella, and Magnomight Systems.

What's next?

Sky and I have been discussing and working out a lot of the political intrigue we want to set up on the different planets. It'll be great to explore some of the motivations of the Jovians, so we can better understand the threats Jupiter is beginning to pose to interplanetary peace. If that sounds interesting, join us and keep an eye on the next articles coming out!

A New Unofficial Challenge for WorldEmber!

Helloooo everyone! I am so excited for this WorldEmber, not just for all the writing I want to do but for all of the writing the community is going to do. This year I am hosting my first ever unofficial challenge, obviously geared towards species. In this challenge, I would like to see people write at least one species. Preferably about one of the nine prompts in my article, but that's not mandatory. Just have fun and write cool things!   Animals are my life, conservation is something I strongly believe in and support, and I want to spread my love for animals and all things related. I love seeing the natural world in worldbuilding, it's always such a fun and diverse topic to explore.
If you want to participate in this challenge and make journal posts about it, use the #worldemberspecieschallenge hashtag! (it's a long one, sorry, I can't think of anything shorter that's specific enough.)   #worldember #worldember2023 #species #unofficialchallenge #mochievements

November 17, 2023 (bonus Writer's Life Update)

“Don’t worry. Everything will be alright…“

-Someone Elsewood

  hear the clip

Hello, wonderful people. Today's Update is a bonus for everyone to read: both paying subscribers and free followers!

I am so grateful to you all for being awesome and supporting me throughout this journey, Not only have some of you been subscribing, but adding one-off donations which is just so amazing. Special shout out to Dreamcartographer for donating to my Ko-Fi the other day while I was streaming on Twitch! <3
I have been trying to be less shy about promoting my projects and soliciting donations as of late. Right now, I am not in the best financial situation, but I appreciate what I have. I know that it is not at all anything to take for granted. Still, it would be lovely to be a bit more comfortable and not worry as much. Especially considering that I am about to get laid off from my primary place of employment at the end of January. I still haven’t found any substantially promising substitute. Last time I got laid off from my main income source, I tried to see if it was a sign to maybe start doing my creative gigs full-time and figure out if I could survive from that alone. Unfortunately, it didn’t really take off as much as I needed it to. It was not enough to sustain me, so I had to scramble and find another “real” job. I suppose we’ll see what happens this time.
I love to support people, but, sometimes, it seems that I am giving more than I am receiving. I need to work something out if I want to be balanced and successful. I suppose I’m just trying to treat people the way I want to be treated, but the golden rule can sometimes make me lose all my gold, unfortunately lol. Perhaps it will get paid back to me one day. Until then, I just have to keep praying and keep going.
Though I’ve been attempting to improve, I should strive harder to become even better at self-promotion. It’s something that I have been trying so very diligently to work on. I am attempting to find a balance between being wayyyy too passive and being a total nuisance who begs people for donations every time they look up. It seems that neither of those strategies has worked incredibly well for me so far. Either I am doing nothing and asking nothing and getting nothing, or I am doing things and asking things and not getting too many things. Some people have complained about not having a lot of success, only selling a few hundred copies a year lol. I can’t even say I’ve done anything close to that. I know everyone’s situation is different, but, from what I’ve gathered, I feel like people looking at me from the outside think I am more successful and well-off than I really am.
I am thinking of starting a fundraiser project to see how much I can collect. I really want to build up the hype around Someone’s birthday next year, and drafting up a goal to earn a bit of money will ensure the festivities will be really super extra special! I have a lot of things planned; short audio dramas, story snippets, cool surprise streams, and more! I want at least one piece of new content published every day in February leading up to the big shebang on the 29th itself.
A lot of people don’t actually notice how expensive it is to do all the things that I do. And I do this a whole lot, most of the time offering it to everyone for free. It takes up a lot of my time and attention. It also costs a lot of money to compensate the voice actors satisfactorily. I want to pay them well because they do an absolutely spectacular job! But I’m also doing some of the voices, along with editing and publishing, producing, advertising, designing, writing, and everything else, but I am not compensated. It’s fun and all, but working seven days a week and still trying to find a way to get things together can be very taxing and costly. I know this, but I don’t really know a solution to the problem that I can implement on my own. I don’t want to stop doing it, but I need to figure something out. People suggest I delegate, but delegation costs money. That’s another reason why I do a lot of things myself.
Sorry for this lengthy rant. I say this to say thanks to all of you who are following me, paid or not, because you help to motivate me and keep me doing these things for you all. I truly appreciate and cherish your generous support. Words cannot describe how much you mean to me. Still, the inevitable mention is that, like it or not, money makes the world go round. This is one of the reasons I may take a hiatus on certain projects. Thank you for understanding.
If you are able to support, I will be eternally grateful. If not, but you know people who might be willing to chip in a bit or two to help me out, I would really be honored if you shared my links--my projects--any of my works with anybody. And if there are any perks you’d love to see to help you feel more compelled to contribute to my efforts, please shout them out. I’m going to try to get merch up and stuff like that. I already have some things going that have been established for a while, but I don’t do enough advertising. Perhaps I’ll be changing that soon but hopefully not to the point of painfully unbearable annoyance lol.
I love each and every one of you so very much! God bless and great success to you with all the stuff! Sending so many prayers and hugs. <3

Knavish Canto Chapters 42: Punchline and 43: Blue Beams and Rise are Live!

Read Chapter 42 here.   Read Chapter 43 here.   *Yep, two chapters. I meant for it to be one, but think they work better as two :)   Lapis and company are intent on saving Rin and the khentauree, but an enemy ship interferes.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy #sciencefiction   ****   So, the penultimate x 2 chapter for Knavish Canto just went live. Nov 24 will be the last chapter, I'll take a month-long break, and Broken Dulcet will start on Dec 22.   In Broken Dulcet, fears become reality; aquatheerdaal runs out. The tech the Dentherion Empire has relied on to remain in power stops working, and so does its hold on puppet states. It's a time of flux, one numerous rebellions have waited for, but who has the capability of taking advantage? Desperate times usher in dangers, and Lapis must rely on her skills developed while chasing to keep those she knows and cares for safe.   Plenty of adventure and surprises coming your way, in Broken Dulcet!   ****   Am I sad Knavish Canto is coming to an end? Yes. But I'm also eager for Broken Dulcet to start.   The month break will help with WorldEmber prep/participation. And recharging is not a bad thing. Check out my homework here. I will be changing the page design a little: I love the green box. I don't like the purple-pink one. But it may be, the green is too bright. I am fickle, what can I say.   Maybe that's why I'm going to change the Greenglimmer cover a bit. I think it needs to be darker, more mysterious.   ****   If you don't remember the publishing schedule for Kavish Canto/Broken Dulcet or Snake's Den/Greenglimmer, I'll have it at the book sites, and include it at the end of the current volumes, as well as attach it to the blurb when I put both new ones up at Manuscripts.   With that, take care!   Kwyn

Once again, I attempted #Spooktober and actually succeeded! While I didn't reach the 20 squashed stubs that I wanted, I still finished 13 great articles that added a little more life to Isekai with species. Super happy with what I did accomplish and am excited to continue forward.

More Countries

If you've been following Isekai for a while, you've probably seen the massive country articles that have been published. My husband is the brains behind those and we are still working through the larger countries on the Northern Continent. This month, he finished the Elven Kingdom which has been a hit!

Elven Kingdom
Organization | Apr 29, 2024

The Elven Kingdom is a vast territory that encompasses thousands of miles of forest and is said to be the oldest in the world, the birthplace of life for both animals and plants. In this land, the many types of Elves stand as guardians of the forest.

Future Plans

#WorldEmber Prep month is upon us (tomorrow)! I will be participating in the homework that will be put out on stream and prepping myself for the big event. Overall, my plans are to finish many of the partially complete articles that I made during Summer Camp and do some more cleanup on Isekai as well.
Shiftrex may or may not be participating in WorldEmber, but you can expect to see more countries and even possibly some Storybook content from him over the next couple of months.

Knavish Canto Chapter 41: Betrayals is Live!

Check out Chapter 41 here.   A hidden room in Dreamer's confinement provides explanations--and a view of betrayal.
#darkfantasy #sciencefantasy   ****   Knavish Canto is drawing to a close! Two more chapters, all! I'll be taking a month off, then starting Broken Dulcet. The timeline should go as follows:   November 10 and 24: final chapters   Break   December 22: Start of Broken Dulcet   Just in time for the holidays, and the first chapters will not be holiday-ish in the least. Ah well.   In Broken Dulcet, the dwindling supply of aquatheerdaal finally hits its productive end. Since aquatheerdaal powers known tech, how are governments, corporations, institutions, people, going to respond? How will it affect the Dentherion Empire countries, whose puppet rulers maintained power using tech, while they denied their citizens access to it?   How far will the desperate go, to find an alternative power source? What if one exists, but is held in the hands of a crime syndicate?   There's that, and much more, going on in Broken Dulcet, and Lapis and company will be in the middle of it.   ****   Check out my thirteen Spooktober entries! These will be stills used in an intro video to Evenacht, and while the video needs more art and will take me a while to complete (not a video guru here), I'm hoping to get it finished before the end of December.

Happy Spooktober to All!

Happy Spooktober! I'm very happy that I was able to submit articles for all the prompts this year - I've only recently started getting involved in Challenges, and I've found the prompts have really helped me to keep to my goal of writing at least 300 words per day. I've adopted this goal as a mental health practice, and making sure that I write daily is important to my emotional well-being and ability to stay sane, so I'm very grateful for anything that helps me achieve that goal. I've collected my Spooktober articles in a single page, should anyone care to look through them - I welcome any comments, particularly any constructive criticism you may have. I hope you are all having a wonderful Spooktober!

Lucky 13 for Spooktober

I've had a fun time with Spooktober, and today I reached my target for the badge milestone. This has been really fun focussing each prompt on in-world story-telling, with each of the prompts tying together a few parts of the lore I have built over the last fe years.   The last batch have covered some of the deepest lore of Shadowfire, from aeons before the Destruction with the myths and legacy of the Elder Gods themselves. I've also explored the impact of time quakes, the struggles of an assassin ghost and opened up an as yet unexplored region underneath the frozen expanse of Sea of Black Ice.   I'm going to finish up the month reading other people's work, there's a lot of inspiring nuggets of spookiness around. Great work everybody!

#Spooktober prompt: Despair

Okay, let's try this. Here's one I haven't posted about yet. My article for the #Spooktober 'Despair' prompt is "The Bloodletter's Cult of Redfall Reach." Believing that damnation after death is inevitable, they violently cling to the Everliving's promise that it is possible to never die. They've got no qualms about killing people outside the faith, of course. In fact, it's pretty much mandatory.

Stubocalypse

You might not have seen much from me lately, but that's because I am currently busy working on a big project: the stubocalypse. (Idea stolen shamelessly from Han.)
For every stub in my world, I am writing between 100-200 words and publishing it, including a header and an excerpt. This means my world won't be full of dead links and there is some basic information for readers. :)
My plan is to work on this until the new year, and in the new year I will get back to working on proper articles alongside stubs.
Currently, I have enhanced 27 stubs, and I have 1279 stubs to go. Sadly, I keep making more stubs as I am enhancing stubs, so we'll see if that number goes down or if I am doomed to be Sisyphys.
Here are a couple of my favourite enhanced stubs so far, as I'm not notifying them.

The Valen
Ethnicity | Nov 27, 2023

Often called 'the ghost men' by outsiders, the people of the island of Vale are an isolated culture who make their home amongst ancient and twisted forests.

The Gravelanders
Ethnicity | Nov 27, 2023

The Gravelanders are a group of humans that live in the swamps known as the Gravelands in western Kaien. To outsiders, they are considered to be Kaienese, but the Gravelanders consider themselves as separate and not beholden to Kaienese laws.

Feel free to join if you like! :)

Full Spooktober Spookiness Done

Have got all Spooktober entries done. Putting up the page here, and when in have a click on any that tickles your fancy, and have a good read.   "Spooky Spooktober Here, Get Your Spookiness Here, Just A Click Away"   World Ember next and will see what I can get done there. Ought to be interesting. Maybe expand some of the Spooktober stuff, or may look at the SF stuff I have. Been there a long while and always thought it would make a good companion setting overall.   #spooktober

Evenacht Snake's Den Chapter 42: Heart and Soul is Live!

Read Chapter 42 here.   The Knights of the Finders will do anything, even use forbidden magic, to prevent Laken's Redemption.
#darkfantasy #serialfiction   ****   EEEEE! We're reaching the end of Snake's Den, y'all! There are just a couple more chapters to go (pretty certain 2 more at this point). Then I'll be taking a month break for a recharge before Greenglimmer begins.   Greenglimmer is the location of Laken's second essence. It's a deep, dark area of the Elfiniti Rainforest of southern Uka's Lament. The mini-Joyful travel there next because Lorgan knows the exact location of the right arm. But, as with Snake's Den, essence retrieval isn't that easy. Enemies still stalk them, and will bow to great acts of evil to stop Laken's Redemption.   Sounds cheerful, right? Actually, there will be cheerful parts, like when the mini-Joyful meets other failed Aristarzian gauntlet ghosts. They're a fun bunch, making the best of their afterlife. We'll learn more about Kjaelle's past, too, and why she will do anything for Katta.   The Knights of the Finders, Badeçasyon (bade-eh-say-shun), and info about Sun Oracle Machella, will make an appearance, too. Get ready for some big surprises.   Keep tuned for updates! My tentative schedule: the final chapters of Snake's Den will be published on Nov 3 and Nov 17, then a month break. The first chapter of Greenglimmer will be Dec 15, right in time for the holidays and the end of WorldEmber (cause I suck at planning these things. Ah well).   ****   Spooktober! The images I'm drawing will eventually be made into an Evenacht intro video. You can check out what I've done so far here:

Spooktober 2023 First Pics

So I'm using #Spooktober as a means to create images for a video I plan to make as an intro to the Evenacht serial book site (here at WA!)
I'll be presenting it as sorta picture-heavy story for Spooktober. It's a WIP with more to come since I haven't reached 13 yet, but I'm happy with what I've done so far (still need to enter the relevant pics into the Spooktober categories).
