A Village with Deep Roots
Syrgos has a long history of harmonious coexistence between its farmers and the Mousari, whose unique skills in herding sheep have been passed down through generations. The Mousari’s tradition of riding atop the farmers’ dogs to corral sheep into the Shadow Wilds - a mystical forest east of the village - forms the backbone of Syrgos' cheese production. The sheep, grazing on acorns, chestnuts, and rare mosses found only in the forest, produce milk with an unparalleled flavour profile that defines the village's famous cheese. The Shadow Wilds, both a resource and a source of mystery, have become part of the village’s lore. While most locals take pride in the cheese’s taste, the Mousari know that their secretive herding techniques are the true reason for Syrgos’ success. For their efforts, they claim a share of the cheese as payment. The Cheesemaking Business
Syrgos is renowned for its extraordinary sheep milk cheese, ranging from mild white varieties to herb-spiced creations and even more adventurous options matured with live insect larvae. This dedication to variety and craftsmanship has made Syrgos cheese a prized export, sought after in Bridgeport and far beyond. Historically, the League of Cheese Aficionados (LOCA) relied on Syrgos cheesemakers to supply their monthly Cheese of the Month event. However, a recent surge in demand from Han, driven by the discovery of a cure for Cheese Intolerance, has shifted the focus of Syrgos’ cheesemakers. With Hani merchants paying triple the usual price and more, Syrgos has redirected its exports, causing tensions with LOCA, whose members even staged a protest by blocking the harbour at Holinda. In addition to cheese, Syrgos exports sheep’s milk, wool, and smoked eel to nearby towns and imports baskets from Panossa and Squid Liquor from Tasdale. While its economy is flourishing thanks to the booming cheese trade, the shift in priorities has put the village at the centre of a growing regional controversy.A Humble Yet Vibrant Community
Despite its economic focus, Syrgos remains a charming village where traditions run deep. Its monthly Beer Run Festival, hosted by visiting farmers from Yolo, brings a lively burst of energy to the otherwise tranquil settlement. Tourists occasionally visit to enjoy the scenic coastline and sample the famed cheese, but the village largely retains its quiet, close-knit character. The Cheesemaker Song
Sheep, sheep, sheep all day.
This is what we do:
Get their milk and make the cheese.
Eat a steamy stew.
Cheese, cheese, cheese all day.
This is what we do:
Put in spices, make the cheese.
Rinse, repeat, redo.
Sleep, sleep, sleep all night.
This is what we do:
Count the sheep until the morn'.
All the sheep go: baaaaaaaaaaah!
Hehe, love it!
