Founded 35 years ago in the heart of
Bridgeport, the League of Cheese Aficionados (LOCA) began as little more than a light-hearted wager among the city’s elite. During an extravagant meal at a high-end inn, a group of distinguished diners boldly claimed they had tasted every cheese the world had to offer. One sharp-witted trader, unwilling to let such a boast go unchallenged, made an ambitious bet: he would present them with a new cheese every month for as long as he could. The wager continued for three years before the trader was declared victorious, and what started as a whimsical challenge soon evolved into an enduring tradition.
Membership and Influence
LOCA’s membership consists of a mix of old-world nobility and more modern culinary enthusiasts. Though the League remains dominated by the upper class, a handful of well-connected members from the middle class have managed to secure a place within its ranks. Gaining entry into LOCA is no simple matter - membership requires strong social ties within Bridgeport’s elite and a demonstrated passion (or at least a respectable enthusiasm) for fine cheese.
Despite the League’s long-standing reputation, its members have become somewhat complacent in recent years. For some, the pursuit of cheese has become little more than an excuse for socialising over wine, with the passion for dairy appreciation fading into the background. However, a dedicated faction within the League remains unwavering in their commitment to the art and science of cheese tasting. They argue that LOCA’s mission is not merely indulgence but the preservation and promotion of Bridgeport’s culinary culture.
LOCA’s Activities
LOCA’s flagship event is the
Cheese of the Month gathering, held at The
Salty Cardinal tavern. Every month, members and enthusiasts gather to sample a specially selected cheese, paired with fine wines, fresh bread, and seasonal fruits. Though open to the public for a modest fee, LOCA occasionally hosts exclusive tastings for its members, where rare or experimental cheeses are presented in private settings.
The map of
Bridgeport, a harbour city located in the south of
Farenia, showcases a maritime center characterized by vibrant activity and bustling trade.
Beyond tastings, the League has historically supported cheesemakers, merchants, and traders, ensuring that the city remains well-supplied with the finest dairy products available. However, this role has diminished in recent years, much to the frustration of LOCA’s more serious members.
Recent Struggles and the Fight for Relevance
LOCA’s influence is not what it once was. The variety of cheeses available at their events has stagnated, with the League relying almost entirely on cheesemakers from
Syrgos to supply their monthly selections. A growing conflict in Syrgos, combined with increased demand from
Han, has placed severe strain on this supply chain, leaving LOCA scrambling for alternatives.
Meanwhile, the League’s noble sponsors have begun to voice dissatisfaction, complaining of declining standards and a lack of originality in recent selections. Some have even threatened to withdraw their financial support, which could spell disaster for the League’s future. For certain members - who have grown accustomed to using LOCA’s funds as a personal safety net - this is a frightening prospect.
LOCA’s leadership now faces a critical challenge: revitalising the League’s reputation and securing new sources of high-quality cheese, or risk fading into obscurity. Whether they will rise to the occasion or simply continue sipping wine while their influence crumbles remains to be seen.
