The Dormant Lands

The Dormant Lands is a region of the Veritian Leaf once under occupation of the Dormant Cult. It is situated from the stem of the continental leaf to the southern most minor veins. It was once called the Southern Stem region. After the defeat of the Dormant Rise, much of the region descended into warring states where the remaining Dormant leadership fought for control over their own little kingdoms.

Geography

There are several regions in the Dormant Lands:
  • The Sinfetter Salt Flats: A dried up region that was a sea once upon a time. It is situated at the eastern side of this territory. The Shadar-kai mined heavily this region for salt which they traded with the Fey of the Eastern Fey Wilds and to the Southern Farmlands pre-Dragon Blight. This region is was contested, as the Shadar-Kai colonials and their fey allies fight with the Dormant Cult, but they reclaimed it once the Dormant Advance was routed in 1041.
  • The Bone Mountains: On the south western side of this territory are jagged mountains called the Bone Mountains. This region is known to be home to inter-continental orcs. A savage and wild people in a savage and wild land, this region is a thorn in the side of whoever is charge of this territory.
  • The Large Droplet, also called the Sea of Nightmares: The largest body of water on the Veritian Leaf, it takes up most of the Western side of the Dormant Lands. Both the major cities of Sleeping Dock and Nightmare coast this sea.
  • Shadow of Death: The deepest scar on the Veritian Leaf, this valley is always dark as the light of day cannot reach its depths. It is between Pillar and Living Dream Fortress on the eastern side of the Dormant Lands.
  • The Vain Forest/ Hag's Inn: On the northern border of the Dormant Lands bordering the Southern Farmlands is a large forest filled with evil fey magic.
  • Path to the Tree: A large mountain at the southern side of the Dormant Lands holds the sole tunnel to the stem leading to the Cosmic Tree.

Localized Phenomena

Due to the Dormant, much of this region is covered by this pollution called the Sleeping Miasma. Exposure to this gas would cause sudden insomnia which the person cannot awaken from until they are removed from the corrupted regions. This phenomena emerged during the Dormant Rise period (950-1030) when the cities of Nightmare and Pillar warred against the Shadar-Kai fort of Sinfetter, which was renamed Living Dream Fortress after the Dormant conquest. This weaponized gas remains in the atmosphere.

History

During the Years of Expansion, the church of Veritas were just barely settling this region. It was not so profitable as other regions near the center of the leaf were far safer as they did not need to compete with Shadar-Kai colonists. After the Sundering, the peoples abandoned by the Church of Veritas in this region simply stayed and built lives for themselves. Isolationist and backwater, the Southern Stem region became of little interest to most civilized nations north of it. Even during the Dragon Blight, the region was largely ignored even from the invaders. There was a period of inner conflict as the orc raids attacked Nightmare and Sleeping Docks, but to the greater world these were minor at best.   During the Era of Kings, the Dormant Cult emerged in this region. A period called the Dormant Rise was coined as the Cult gained control of the region. This still seemed a minor issue to the rest of the Leaf to their eventual pain, as soon as the cult took the region they marched their war machine onto the rest of the world.
