Gilburrow

Gilburrow was a city founded by the Szereban tieflings in 514. It has always been a dark and gloomy place, built in a swamp forest close to the Western Fey Wilds. It is Tumult's furthest northern city. It is currently in disrepair after the Demon Troubles, but reconstruction has resumed in full after the expulsion of the devils at Dusk. Gilburrow is where the Demon Troubles started and where many claim Demon Worship came from.

Demographics

Mostly tiefling and human.

Government

The city is ruled by the Szereban family, nobility of the Tumult kingdom. It is run like a fiefdom.

Defences

They have a series of palisades, but their main defense is in their warlock covens and druid circles. Magic and natural defenses is how they guard against attack.

Industry & Trade

There are two industries of note here. First is the forestry industry. Gilburrow is surrounded by a forest of strong Swamp Willows that are in much demand by woodcarvers for furniture and such. Gilburrow even has a school of woodcraft for this specific industry. Their second industry is medicine, as the druids and warlocks of Gilburrow make their coin via producing things such as Health Potions and such. A popular Energy Drink was also manufactured here, though the business had fortuitously founded other Energy Drink factories elsewhere before the Demon Troubles hit.

Infrastructure

Since it is built in a swamp, most their buildings and walkways are on stilts raised above the water level. Stone is hard to come by here, so most is made out of wood.

Assets

Gilburrow is fairly poor. Much of their wealth was used in combating the Demon Troubles, and the rest of it used to fund reconstruction. They have much in demand resources, so there is still cause to hope in Gilburrow.

History

Gilburrow was founded during the Sundering by the Szereban family. This group of tieflings were moving away from the Church of Veritas, seeking a return to pacts and magic less appreciated in the Church (though it was not completely outlawed, the Sundering blew the restrictions of the Church way out of proportion). There the community of tieflings grew up until the Dragon Blight.   Gilburrow was not the most popular city state for Iscalon the First to rally against the dragon Meirvyrth, as much folklore and horror stories came from the region. But Iscalon was not afraid. He went himself to the city of druids and warlocks, dispelling the cursed reputation of the region. They gladly joined and fought alongside him, Gilburrow becoming a part of Tumult ever since.   In 1030, the nobleman Dacian Szereban tempted interplanar forces in his search for the Szereban ancestral fiend. His research opened a rift to the Nine Hells, starting the Demon Troubles. Contrary to popular belief, the portal did not then spew forth hordes of devils and demons. Only a few demons actually travelled through, a notable one being the succubus Lady of Dusk who opened the greater rift over Dusk. The real bulk of this conflict was the civil war that began between the demon worshippers and everyone else. It was a devastating conflict that lasted 5 years, where everyone suspected everyone. Thus Dacian had enough of it. Though he wanted to continue his research on the Nine Hells, he had to shut the portal. This started the final battle, which ended with Dacian giving his life to shut the portal and saving his town. The Szereban have since been fighting a secret war against the influence of the Demon Worshippers.   In 1040, after the Felicity Ball, Kazimir returned to Gilburrow, and to appease his people, confessed of his father's crimes and was executed.   In 1040, after the victory in Dusk, Andujar Szereban returned to Gilburrow to start the reconstruction.
