Felicity

The capital city of Tumult. Found within the Felicity Hills region of Tumult. Population reached approximately 1 million by the year 1040, but has declined since. It is the third biggest city on the Veritian Leaf.

Demographics

It is mostly human, but it shares a diversity of other civilized races. Halflings take up the second largest demographic, followed by half-elves and dwarves.

Government

The city is directly under the authority of the king and his military, but there is also a municipal governmental structure with its own body of officials. That structure is currently under repair after the prophet Frillith cast out the politicians from the parliament building and founded her revival of the church of Neih there. Other governmental bodies include the aristocracy, whose power is mostly built upon the regions they control, but a few of them have accrued sizable influence within Tumult itself, notably the Granthams and the Silvergrafts. The Silvergraft elves are no more, destroyed by the Dread Sin Gluttony.

Defences

Their main defense is their royal fortress built on the highest most hill in the region. It cusps a steep cliff, giving attackers only one avenue to assault the fortress via land, which is through their entire city. Thick walls divide the districts, and numerous forts litter the city area. The closer to the royal fortress one gets, the more pronounced the defenses are. Yet, the city is so populated that the walls cannot contain its people, and several new undefended districts lie around its outer wall.

Assets

Felicity has been running quite the deficit in recent years, as King Iscalon the Fourth was a poor ruler (despite public perception). Yet, with the return of Lord Kourend Salmonpuddle, there have been an influx of victories for Tumult which saw a balancing of the budget (namely the situations in Pinecone and Dusk being resolved, as well as a general cleansing of corruption in the government with the Demon Troubles). While much of the wasteful spending has been removed, reparations and the upcoming war with the Dormant Cult has strained the budget anew. But now that Tumult has no more threats within so the economy is recovering. The unified Tumult under the Lich King Bedrich may bring about a much more prosperous period than that of the previous ruler. All that being said, Felicity still has much wealth, being the capital of the third most powerful nation on the Veritian Leaf.

History

Felicity was founded by Veritian colonists claiming the region from the Fey natives. It started as a simple settlement for the loggers who were to clear the wilds around the Fifth Vein (around the Leaf Scar). It became a hub for the sparsity of fey in the hills. The hills and lakes also offered defense and agricultural potential for a largely unpopulated region. It became a self-governing city state, following the example of Third (though not for religious reasons) during the Sundering, officially calling itself a city-state in 419.   It was not until the Dragon Blight did Felicity garner any interest throughout the Leaf. The lord at the time, a human named Iscalon, was a tough yet fair ruler, earning the respect of his people and neighbors. Yet it was his military prowess which set Iscalon apart from the other local lords and ladies. When Meirvyrth attempted to annex the region, it was Iscalon's resistence and tactics which pushed the she-dragon out. He later marched across what became Tumult, pushing out the servants of Meirvyrth and establishing his new kingdom.   Notable current events which happened in the city are The Neih Revival, The Dance Incident, The Assassination of Iscalon the Fourth, The Demon Curse, and The Rise of Lich King Bedrich. Other events which happened in the city but outside the general knowledge of the people is The Exorcism of Asmodeus, The Assassination of Tommy Drummer, and Expulsion of Uz.   After King Bedrich assumed the throne, the population of Felicity declined by approximately a quarter of a million. Many of them died or were displaced by the riots, fires, and troubles that occurred in the turbulent year 1040, but the majority were encouraged to leave by King Bedrich given financial incentives to repopulate the Pinecone region, the Dusk region, the Gilburrow region and the Third region. This was part of the king's plan to rebuild the country after the destruction his father wrought to it the years prior.

Tourism

There are many places of note to visit in Felicity:   1. The Royal Fortress, also known as the Fortress of Felicity, is built on the hill where Iscalon the First pushed back Meirvyrth. While not many are allowed into the central compound where the King and his family lives, many are able to visit its surrounding courts, its massive ballroom, and tour their walls. While a lot of patriotic Tumultians visit it to pay respects to their king, the fortress is also popular with dwarves from the Bludgeon Halls who come to admire its defensive capabilities.   2. The Felicity Central Park was once a hub of activity as it was for many the only plot of nature in miles living in the vast city. It all went to rot after the 1040 Felicity Ball when a group of adventurers took the heart from the local forest spirit in order to cleanse a curse from the Demon Troubles. The Neih Revival work tirelessly to rejuvenate the park, but for many it has become a reminder as the precursor to several terrible events within the city which saw approximately a tenth of its population displaced. Debates wage whether the park should be developed into housing, since a few districts that burned down after the death of King Iscalon the Fourth have shown way better signs of growth than this barren plot of land.   3. The First Church of the Neih Revival, also known as Frillith's Church, is located strangely in the political district as it was founded in the old Parliament building where the local bureaucrats use to meet. They were mostly expelled for Demon Worship, and the miracle that the Prophet brought to that place has made it a pilgrimage sight for both the new Neih Revival church, as well as Neih worshippers of the Church of Veritas and the Church of Summer. It has also gained quite a bit of political clout, as about a fifth of the population turned to Neih after the many disasters that hit their city. Even the Lich King Bedrich is trying to get them on his side, they being the majority of those who oppose his new reign.   4. The Mineosian Cathedral of Valor sits in one of the merchant districts. It is the oldest building in Felicity, having been built the era of expansion (the year 290). While it went into disrepair during the Sundering and the Veritian Dark Ages (it was essentially ruins during the founding of Felicity), it received a surprising revival during the Era of Kings when the Church of Veritas made it their embassy in Tumult. Iscalon the First even payed the bill to have it repaired. It saw a bit of damage during the curses of the Demon Troubles, but Mineos is tough and it holds strong even in a sea of enemies. Tumult tolerates them nowadays as they provide the diplomatic link between Tumult and the Second Mineosian Crusade.   5.The Felician Library is no Tower of Dakath or Seer's Sight Tower, and it may not rival the old libraries of Val'ul, but this mage tower still receives much praise for local Tumultian magic. Surrounding the library is Felicity's academia. Though not the largest group, as Tumult is a far more warlike culture than a learned one, it still hosts a good repertoire of influential minds.

Geography

Felicity was once simply a city on a hill, but has long since spread. The hill still holds the castle of the king of Tumult, a most defensible fortress much improved since the Dragon Blight. Around the city are hills and sparse pockets of forests and lakes.
