The Pit

The Pit is the gith city and penal colony situated in the Pinecone province of Tumult. It is an independent territory within Tumult, given that they have a prosperous relationship with the trade of a slave workforce for discount airships. Half of the Pit is the city proper for the Gith, the other half a prison where they mine cosmic sugar and build their airships. It is the largest and most open gith settlement on the Veritian Leaf.

Demographics

Most the population are gith, but they also have a sizable slave population consisting of the various lesser race prisoners from Tumult and surrounding nations, as well as mindflayer slaves brought over from their home leaf.

Government

The government is a corporatocracy, with the shipwright CEO on top followed by the shareholders and subsidiary companies.

Defences

Their main defense is that they are hidden underground, with the main entrance being a singular elevator descending into a pit. A network of tunnels also aids their defense, as it is difficult to bring a sizable force into it.

Industry & Trade

Their main industry is airships. They can build them on their own, as they have their own forestry and mining operation for all the materials needed, but they often barter with the lesser races for slaves to bolster their workforce.

Infrastructure

The gith themselves live in mounds that look like bee hives. They also have a research center where they study eldritch knowledge. Finally, they have their shipbuilding factory. Tumult also has an embassy in the Pit, run by the Ambershard dwarves.

History

The Pit did not use prison labor until well after the end of the Dragon Blight, around the year 850. Since then, if a person was sentenced to the Pit, it was essentially a death sentence. But there have been a few escapes in their centuries as a penitentiary, forcing them to up the security. After a string of them in the mid 10th century, they began to issue the same mind numbing devices they placed on their mindflayers on the more rowdy prisoners. In the 1040, after the death of King Iscalon, the Pit saw their worst prison break, as the assassins of the king broke out, stealing their last six engine airship (not that they cannot make more, but that it became far more cost effective to build and sell four engine ships). That devastating escape, where over a hundred prisoners escaped, and many more were killed (both guard and worker). This escape led to a decade of reform in their prison system.

Geography

It is in a pit carved into the Veritian Leaf.

Natural Resources

Cosmic sugar is their greatest natural resource. But even then they still have to buy from the outside to power the airships they produce.
