Val'ul

Val'ul was a city of magic located in the Southern Farmlands on the Veritian Leaf. It was built around one of the uls of Spring by a society of powerful mages after the Sundering, for there was a lot of magical potential there. In the year 1040 the city was lost in an attempt to kill the ussaire god Resentment.

Demographics

There was an assorted group of races living here. As long as they could use magic, they were welcome here.

Government

It was run by a council of mages, each member ruling over a district and gathering together to deal with external issues.

Defences

Val'ul had an elaborate defense system. Three forts formed a triangle around their territory (Fort Emancipation, Fort Dialectica, and Fort Essential). These forts served as conduits to form an wall of magical energy like a pyramid covering the city. After that defense, Val'ul Proper had a wall armed with dozens of magical cannon.

Industry & Trade

They traded in magic, whether it be scrolls, potions, enchantments, etc.

Infrastructure

Val'ul was often dubbed the city of towers as Val'ul Proper seemed to have nothing but mage towers. While the more prominent mage households had unique designs, the majority of the city had cookiecutter designs for their towers, like a suburban magical community.   Outside of Val'ul Proper was a large green space for growing crops in case of prolonged siege. This outer portion held a few townships for the study of magical agriculture and druidic knowledge. House Necromancy and a famous theatre were also built here.   Val'ul Proper was divided into nine sections. Here is a list of them:
  • The Ul
  • House Illusion
  • House Abjuration
  • House Divination
  • House Evocation (which also had the Val'ul School of Magic)
  • House Transmutation and House Enchantment
  • House Conjuration
  • Runekeeper District (Housed the Val'ul Library which was transported to Tel'ul before the temporal bubble)
  • Artificiery (the market and industry district)

History

Val'ul was founded in 675, though mages were living around the Ul for a couple centuries prior. It became a prominent center of magic fairly quickly. During the Dragon Blight, the Val'ulian mages answered the call of King Iscalon and helped defeat Meirvyrth and Balmerrait. Though they remained fairly independent, they joined in the founding of Tumult.   During the Era of Kings, Val'ul grew dissatisfied with their connection to Tumult. Thus, they endeavored to secede. There was a war of secession from 926 to 935, where Val'ul came out victorious and returned to an independent city state.   In the year 1040, during talks of reunification with Tumult, the Paraclete of Uz convinced the majority of the Council of Val'ul to join in her attempt to kill Resentment. She fed off their hubris, using both the Guild of Rogues and the Anti-Reunification movements of the Van Hydens to defeat and discredit dissenters, all to create a belief in Val'ul supremacy and grandeur. She was willing to sacrifice the city as long as Resentment was killed, but as soon as the trap was sprung did they see that they stood no match to the flames of Resentment. A temporal bubble stopped the destruction, but to save the leaf from Resentment's wrath, Val'ul was given to the Hahlian law Tid Navarande.   The survivors went to either Tel'ul with the archmage Mirabel or up to Tumult as refugees.

Geography

Val'ul was built on a hill, the Ul sitting on the highest point.
