The Val'ul Council of Mages

The Val'ul Council of Mages are an oligarchic council of wizards and sorcerers who rule over the magic city of Val'ul. There are eight members in the council, with the occasional inclusion of a ninth from House Necromancy.

Structure

It is an oligarchy, with eight powerful magic families holding seats on the council. Though most the time the seats are passed down within the family, other powerful magical families could claim a seat if the current holder's family is waning in influence or power. One notable example of this was archmage Stormchapel taking the seat of House Illusion. There are eight seats on the council, one for every school of magic except Necromancy. House Necromancy was only allowed temporary position within the council, as their magic was frowned upon. There were also two seats of the Evocation school for the sheer number of their population that followed that popular magical path.

Public Agenda

Their interest was the pursuit of greater magics and fame. Val'ul was fairly competitive in the magic community. This pride was exploited by the paraclete of Uz, who promised the city great reward for defeating the ussairian god Resentment. This failed and led to the destruction of the city.

History

The council was formed in the late part of the Sundering. The ul which they built their city around was a place of great mystery and mystic for the magic community, so a coalition of magicians settled around it. The council soon followed as population grew.   The council opted to join Tumult during the Dragon Blight, as the threat of dragons was real for both parties. They aided greatly with the war, but the council never really desired to become Tumultian. Val'ul always remained an independent city, refusing to create too close of connections with the Tumultian nobility. They had one foot out the door from the start, and when grievances and their pride could no longer allow it, the Val'ul War of Secession occurred in the year 926. They won and seceded successfully.   Near the mid eleventh century, one of the archmages of the council's daughter was engaged to prince Bedrich of Tumult. This began talks of reunification, with much resistance on both sides. Though the marriage happened, it occurred after the loss of Val'ul.

Disbandment

The council disbanded at the end of the year 1040, though the fall started earlier. The first hint of the fall was with the disappearance of Archmage Carnago of House Evocation, who later was found dead by assassination from the Guild of Rogues. The second omen was the death of Nymira Fenfyx, heir to House Conjuration, who died at the battle for Dusk. The Fall of Val'ul was the final nail to the coffin of the council. In the celestial battle and temporal anomaly, most the council was lost. Archmages Balefrost and Bodo of House Transmutation and House Enchantment respectively were confirmed killed by the flames of Resentment, as was Archmage Kroft of House Evocation by other sources. Archmage Carnago of House Divination and Archmage Stormchapel of House Illusion disappeared with the city when the city was given to the Hahlian god of time, Tid Navarande. Archmage Fenfyx died in the battle of the Tuthian Diamond against Resentment's red dragons. The only surviving member of the council was Archmage Mirabel, who was rescued by a group of adventurers before the city was lost. He moved to Tel'ul with a large portion of the surviving Val'ulians. House Necromancy also survived, though not technically a member of the council. They led the other survivors to Tumult, and bent the knee to the Lich King Bedrich.
