The Duchy of the Lands East of the Hespeaks - House Hayford Era

Ophelia Hayford was the second child of Duchess ser Lauryn Hayford and Theodal Crowler.
A disease commonly referred to as 'The Sickness' swept through The Kingdom of Somercrag.
It mostly affected women and those with the ability to bear children, and disproportionately affected Noble Households.
The Sickness killed as many as one in ten people in Somercrag over the course of the year and a half it ravaged the country, before mysteriously stopping.
Queen Malina Somercrag called upon her Duchal Vassal to raise their banners and begin massing troops at The Pass to cross The Witwell Mountains and begin working to oppose The Irogonie Aggression.
Each duchy formed its own army, allowing the Dukes, Duchesses or their Marshals to command the troops they knew best.
The Kingdom of Somercrag entered into a formal alliance with several Families of The Lamas Plains to oppose The Kingdom of Irogonie's Aggressive Expansion into their lands.
In her capacity as Marshal of the Royal Council, ser Sola Somercrag declares war on Irogonie.
Following their defeat at The Battle of Starfield and the death of Prince Lur Lighthelm, the The Kingdom of Irogonie surrendered to The Kingdom of Somercrag.
The forces of The Kingdom of Somercrag returned through The Pass, marking the beginning of a period of celebration across the country.
On the day of the mid-winter Solstice ser Newall Foxworth was wedded to Lady Ophelia Hayford, the younger sister of Duke Brennar Hayford.
The wedding was arranged by ser Sola Somercrag and her Chancellor Lady Laycie Sawler as a reward for ser Newall's actions during The Battle of Starfield.
As part of this arrangement ser Newall founded House Foxworth of Fairstrand and took up the Lordship of part of the land ceded to The Kingdom of Somercrag .
In the late evening the Armoury Tower in Haycastle suddenly bursts into flame. By the time the residents of the castle are able to stop the fire the tower itself is ruined and collapsed under its own weight.
The following morning, investigation turns up a bundle of mustard yellow cloth and a bronze token in the shape of a stag by one of the castle's side gates, suggesting the involvement of House Winthrop of Hess Hall.
Investigating the fire in the Armoury Tower in Haycastle, Duke Brennar Hayford led a small party across The Hespeak Mountains to Hess Hall.
While there Hess Hall Came Under Attack seemingly by the Duke's own men. Brennar and his men were instrumental in turning back the attack.
They stayed a few days to recover from the battle before returning to Haycastle, satisfied of ser Dominic Winthrop's loyalty to the Duke but with new questions unanswered.
Whilst the party of Duke Brennar Hayford was visiting Hess Hall investigating the possible involvement of House Winthrop in the Armoury Tower fire at Haycastle, it Came Under Attack from soldiers wearing the livery of House Hayford of Haycastle.
The attackers scaled the walls with ropes and ladders, and brought down the castle's gate with a covered ram.
The Duke's party joined the Winthrops in defending the castle, with Edgarth Hayford and Mattheo Foxworth fighting alongside ser Daltis Winthrop in the breached gatehouse.
The defenders were successful in turning away the attack, and Edgarth was knighted following hte battle by ser Dominic Winthrop for his actions in the battle.
Portar Winthrop, second child of House Winthrop of Hess Hall, brought news of The Battle of Hess Hall before Queen Malina Somercrag, demanding that Duke Brennar Hayford be brought before the royal court and tried for the attack and the death of Portar's parents ser Dominic and Lady Alson Winthrop and their eldest son ser Daltis.
This news, or the lack of an immediate satisfactory response from the Queen, spurred riots throughout the capital. They were only ended when ser Sola Somercrag reformed Her Vanguard and rode to Allerton, Duke Brennar's next supposed target, to investigate and bring the Duke to justice.
Sola's Vanguard arrived in Allerton on the same morning as Duke Brennar Hayford's party.
They met at a crossroads in the city, and agreed to ride together to Allerton Castle to discuss the recent events.
Sola's Vanguard and Duke Brennar Hayford's parties, having met on the road, were greeted together by ser Kyra Crowler on the steps outside of Allerton Castle.
As they made to enter the castle, however, they were set upon by men-at-arms in the livery of House Hayford of Haycastle. Amongst the casualties were ser Sola Somercrag, who took a crossbow bolt to the eye in the initial ambush.
Those on the steps soon found the doors to the keep shut before them and the gate out from the courtyard to the city shut behind them, with soldiers advancing on them from all sides.
Over the course of the battle it became clear that, despite the Hayford livery, the aggressor soldiers were a combination of hired brigands, mercenaries, and the men-at-arms of House Crowler itself.
Not for the first time, Mattheo Foxworth proved his initiative by leading a small party, including ser Tyon Cray, ser Arthur Buckhaill, ser Astris Conklyn and ser Ivvar Bonebrake in battling to the top of the walls to take out the crossbowmen raining down bolts on the beleaguered knights and taking control of the castle's gatehouse to open an avenue of escape.
Later in the battle the same group fought their way to a servant's door on the keep, battling through the kitchen, the great hall and eventually reaching the main entryway just as Duke Brennar, ser Boggs Leonhart, ser Elton Slaite and ser Sola Somercrag herself finally managed to break down the front door, pinning the last of the castle's defenders between them.
ser Mitchar Somercrag, ser Sola's youngest brother, arrived in Allerton with a contingent of Royal soldiers to take control of the city until the issues in The Hayford Duchy could be resolved.
He took custody of Duke Brennar Hayford, ser Mattheo Foxworth and Brandeth Crowler while ser Sola, recently recovered from her injury, set off for Hess Hall.
Barely recovered from the crossbow bolt which cost her an eye, ser Sola Somercrag set out from Allerton with a greatly reduced party, only those well enough to travel, to investigate the supposed ruins of Hess Hall, though after the revelations of The Battle of Allerton she was not surprised when they arrived some days later to find it intact.
The Vanguard stayed one night in the Hall before returning to Allerton. ser Dominic Winthrop, Lord of Hess Hall, rode alongside her, to add his own testimony of the The Battle of Hess Hall to Duke Brennar Hayford's defence.
The day after they returned from Hess Hall Sola's Vanguard departed Allerton once more, bringing Duke Brennar Hayford, ser Dominic Winthrop and Mattheo Foxworth to The City of Bayglen to testify before Queen Malina Somercrag.
They leave Brandeth Crowler in the custody of ser Mitchar Somercrag.
While Sola's Vanguard camped on the Western shore of Eastlake, ser Tyon Cray discovered a battered, ragged man shadowing their camp.
This turned out to be ser Edam Bracks, Duke Brennar Hayford's Marshal, who had been missing since The Battle of Allerton.
He revealed that he had been captured by ser Kyra Crowler alongside ser Edgarth Hayford, Duke Brennar's son.
They had been transported by boat to Tayach Dam, from which ser Edam had just escaped. He was wracked with guilt that he had fled the castle before he could rescue ser Edgarth.
ser Sola Somercrag and ser Tyon decided to split the Vanguard - a small party to accompany ser Sola, ser Edam and Duke Brennar to the capital with all the haste they could muster to stand before the queen, and the greater part to accompany ser Tyon in riding to Tayach Dam to rescue ser Edgarth and, if she is still there, arrest ser Kyra Crowler for her treasons.
The greater part of Sola's Vanguard, under the command of ser Tyon Cray, rode to Tayach Dam and arrived the following evening.
They infiltrated and siezed the castle, arresting and then executing ser Anderon Crane. Lady Maeve Buckhaill threw herself from the ramparts when news of ser Anderon's death reached her.
Riding a stretch of the The Kingsroad between Eastlake and the coast, ser Sola Somercrag and her companions came upon a caravaneer and his granddaughter whose wagon had broken down, blocking the road.
Ser Sola had her companions set about repairing the wagon and gathering the carthorses which had bolted into neighbouring fields.
They were Ambushed by ser Kyra Crowler and her men, including the unprecedented use of Some Unknown Power which exploded the wagon.
Finally, ser Edam Bracks revealed himself to be a traitor, killing Duke Brennar Hayford and then using the Duke's own sword to deliver the killing blow to ser Sola.
The traitor ser Edam was the only survivor.
The official story, told by the only survivors of the event and proclaimed by Queen Malina Somercrag, is that ser Sola Somercrag and her companions were riding to The City of Bayglen with evidence of Duke Brennar Hayford's crimes when they were caught by an army led by the Duke and his Marshal ser Edam Bracks, themselves doggedly pursued by ser Kyra Crowler and her men-at-arms.
Ser Edam was torn between his loyalty to his Duke and to the crown. When Duke Brennar struck down ser Sola, Edam finally realised he could not stand by and allow this treason, so he had in turn struck down Duke Brennar.
Queen Malina's Declaration to ser Sola's Vanguard reached Tayach Dam, detailing the events of The Ambush on the Kingsroad and the death of ser Sola Somercrag at the hands of Duke Brennar Hayford, as well as the Duke's death at the hands ser Edam Bracks. It instructed some members of the Vanguard to disperse and return to their homes, others to ride to the capital to renew oaths, as well as exonerating ser Kyra Crowler.
The members of Sola's Vanguard, led by ser Tyon Cray, chose instead to ride to The City of Bayglen and present the evidence they held as to the true events in the Duchy over the past months and the clear implications against ser Kyra.
Ser Tyon Cray, at the head of Sola's Vanguard were met outside of Butcher's Gate, Bayglen by The Queen's Knights, a band led by ser Arton Aerin. The Knights reiterated the instructions laid out to the Vanguard in Queen Malina's Declaration to ser Sola's Vanguard.
The two parties agreed for Tyon to continue to Bayglen Castle accompanied only by ser Edgarth Hayford, with the remainder of the knights waiting outside the city.
When Tyon returned the remaining knights agreed to abide by the terms of the declaration, departing for their various holdings alone.
Over the course of the months between his meeting with Queen Malina Somercrag in The City of Bayglen and The Tourney at Fairstrand 441KS, ser Tyon Cray hatched a conspiracy to use the upcoming Tourney to capture Prince Dalran and ser Mitchar Hespeak, the surviving children of House Somercrag of Bayglen and use them to leverage the Queen into accepting the evidence against ser Kyra Crowler and her part in The Ambush on the Kingsroad.
This conspiracy began with a conversation between ser Tyon and his neighbour Lord Erac Tallman, but spread to include three Duchal Leaders, and ignited The Revolution of 441KS which led to ser Tyon ascending to the throne of The Kingdom of Somercrag.
As the victor of The Battle of Bayglen, King Tyon I Cray appointed six Dukes - Lady Jaenis Skanler, Lord Croll Blackbar and Lady Mariella Gaunt-Goulsblud to resume their previous positions, ser Edgarth Hayford to be restored to his father's seat once he had been recovered from his position as a hostage of the remaining Royalist Soldiers, Hallkatla Darklyn to take up her father's seat which she had won from him during the war, and ser Newall Foxworth to take up a new Duchal seat over the the lands North of The Witwells that had been ceded from The Kingdom of Irogonie at the end of The Irogonie Aggression.
Ser Tyon Cray's forces sailed along the coast and up the Tayach Dam to land on the Southern shores of Eastlake to march on Allerton.
They found the homes and businesses of the city barricaded against them, but no sign of defenders. The lawn outside the castle showed signs of an extensive military camp, now abandoned. When they finally reached Allerton Castle they found signs of fighting there, with dead soldiers in the colours of House Crowler of Allerton, House Stivir of Stivir and House Hespeak of Haycastle amongst others, as well as several dead from the castle's staff, seemingly cut down trying to flee.
They found ser Kyra Crowler alone in the castle's great hall, surrounded by evidence of an attempt to defend the hall against an enemy, though any sign of that enemy was long gone. Ser Kyra was sat alone amidst the carnage, visibly defeated. As ser Allon Southbay, ser Astris Conklyn and the other knights entered the hall ser Kyra rose, preparing to fight, but ser Allon struck first, cleaving her mace wielding hand at the wrist and capturing her.
Ser Kyra was transported back to The City of Bayglen to face justice, while Tyon's forces continued on to Haycastle, the last bastion of the Royalist Soldiers and possible location of the still missing ser Edgarth Hayford.
Ser Astris Conklyn and the other knights in her party arrived to the The Siege of Haycastle from their capture of ser Kyra Crowler in Allerton. While ser Astris took command of the armies fathered there and began discussing strategies to storm the castle, ser Allon Southbay volunteered to ride to the castle's gates under a white flag to attempt to parlay with the defenders.
When he arrived at the gates, it became clear that the defender were expecting to lose their lives defending the castle, and were not expecting to hear any other option. Ser Allon offered an alternative - that the defenders surrender to him, and enter his protection as indentured men and women. He would have them transported to Southbay where, perhaps, they might earn their freedom once more, or at least live to serve him instead of being cut down in battle or taken to the block in The City of Bayglen. The defenders agreed to these terms.
During the evacuation of the defenders, one amongst the Men-at-Arms in the colours of House Hespeak of Haycastle suddenly broke out of the line of soldiers surrendering their arms and assaulted another. Allon broke the fight apart and had both men put in irons. They were revealed to be ser Edam Bracks, the former Marshal of Haycastle, and Isambard Brunel.
Allon had the men transported to Southbay, to form A Military Encampment within his lands, while he returned with the other knights to the capital to witness ser Tyon Cray's coronation.
Ser Edgarth Hayford was found amongst the defenders, as expected. However neither the missing Mattheo Foxworth nor Brandeth Crowler were.
On the first day of the new year King Tyon I Cray was crowned by a gathering of his Dukes and Duchesses.
A great number of guests attended the momentous event, not only Somercrag's Lords and Ladies, but also Princett Nym Cimber at the head of a large part from The Kingdom of Rotheval and Prince Emerson Arturson of The Irogonian Royal Family.
As an additional part of the celebrations, the newly crowned King officiated the wedding of Lady Terin Foxworth and Lady Hellna Gaunt, arranged during The Tourney at Fairstrand 441KS. With the sad passing of her brother during the The Battle of Bayglen, Hellna was now to inherit The Gaunt Duchy.
The King also used this moment to dispense justice over the captured Royalist Soldiers. Ser Kyra Crowler was personally executed by the King before the gathered crowd. Other captured soldiers were given an opportunity to bend the knee to the king or be executed in the Castle's grounds, away from the public eye. Non military prisoners were given the opportunity to bend the knee or be exiled from the capital.
In a private meeting with Tyon's Royal Council Ser Allon Southbay was told that while the king would uphold his resolution of The Siege of Haycastle, he did not support it. He also directed the new Lord to strip Edam of his ranks and titles.
Finally, ser Mattheo Foxworth was knighted in absentia for his service in the various battles of the Revolution. Ser Newall Foxworth left Bayglen that evening to attempt to find his missing son.
To pay for King Tyon I Cray's wedding, his vassals were expected to increase their tithes to him from one-quarter of their income to one-third. They would also be expected to contribute to the celebrations by arranging entertainment and food for the guests, as well as gifts to the newlyweds.
House Epper of Epperton hosted a Tourney on behalf of their liege House Hayford of Haycastle.
The Jousting was won by ser Brealla Hunt, who also won the eye of ser Myna Parsin as the pair rode against each other in the final stages of the competition.
Lady Ophelia Foxworth-Hayford concieved a response to the eruption of The Boxsart Hills, inspired by her own relocation of the oppressed peoples of Barrowton many years ago. Throughout The Kingdom of Somercrag the Duchal Houses would each be responsible for raising fund. These funds would be used to create stores of food, clothing, and other supplies, as well as to to outfit the ships of Somercrag's Royal Fleet for the rescue opertion. The ships would make several trips around the coast of The Continent of Greland, ferrying smallfolk from the worst affected areas on the shores of The Hurst Channelto various ruined or abandoned settlements throughout Somercrag to be settled.
Making use of the uniforms he acquired from The Company of The Third Man two months prior, Lord Tylan Hewlett and a group of his loyal Crewfolk crossed Westlake aboard The Blackwing and infiltrated The Men-at-Arms of House Hayford at Nordbank.
They accompanied the Hayford soldiers as they marched West toward Blackwood. That evening Tylan snuck into the personal tent of Duke Edgarth Hayford, where he poisoned the young Duke's waterskin with Chokewine.
Before he could be sure if the plan had worked, however, battle was joined - to the East, the city of Nordbank burned under assault from his own Men-at-Arms, while from the west The Men-at-Arms of House Blackwood launched an assault from the cover of their trees.
Tylan and his crew narrowly escaped the attack on the camp, and sailed back across the lake under the cover of night.
Anabes was captured by Elliot and Hannah Dent-Frosher during an attack by House Blackwood on House Hayford's army camp on the Northern shore of Westlake.
As a noble prisoner she was taken to Duke Edgarth Hayford's personal tent to have her wounds assessed and to be questioned, however shortly after she began to choke and, despite the attention of several healers, died.
The cause of her death was later determined to be Chokewine poison, which she is assumed to have administered to herself in preference to prolonged capture and questioning.
Shortly after the death of Anabes Blackwood-Justmann, the The Men-at-Arms of House Hayford were caught in hard Fighting on the fringe of Wyldwood. The arrival of several more Southbay Duchy armies pressed the Hayfords hard, and led to a disastrous rout. As Edgarth's army broke around him, and even his Household Knights broke in the face of a furious charge by the Blackwood troops and their savage Minmoths, the young Duke found himself in the sights of the bereaved and vengeful Lady of Westlake.
His knights rallied and fought back to his side, but it was too late. They captured Shela Blackwood and brought ser Edgarth's body back to camp.
Following the death of Duke Edgarth Hayford and the release of the Readiness Reports for the coming Winter, King Tyon I Cray issued Terms of Surrender to the Secessionist Forces. After some negotiation they were accepted, and the war ended.
With The War For The Foxworth Secession 454KS over, nobles from across The Kingdom of Somercrag gathered in Haycastle to pay their respects as he was laid to rest.
Throughout the days leading up to the beginning of March, a change came upon cities across The Kingdom of Somercrag. At first it was small and subtle, a closed business here, a home boarded up there. But by the time the various Councils sat for their March sessions, it was clear something was afoot.
From landmark businesses like Tales Retold on the The Royal Lawn in The City of Bayglen, to the populations of cities from Dewfalls to Southbay, the Hillhurst-folk in Somercrag had begun to leave. Almost all did so quietly, loading their possessions into handcarts or onto boats and disappearing into the night. They took care not to abscond on debts or leave anyone in a poor position by their leaving, but it's also clear they feel whatever debt they might have owed for the Somercrag Rescue Effort 448KS had been repaid, in their own minds if not the mids of those they left behind.
The only true betrayal came from Rila Wren-Stoneheart, who stole away one night with fully half of the Somercrag Royal Fleet.
